Pros: Power-line Ethernet is a great invention and ZyXEL does nice job with their product builds. I have a total of 5 of these devices through out the house and they work perfectly. I recommend 500Mbps minimum because there is considerable loss over distance.

Pros: You plug these in and go. They work right away. Unlike WiFi, they require no setup. To enable encryption, just press the encrypt button on one of the units and do the same with the other unit within 2 minutes. Nearly foolproof. Speeds are much better than WiFi and signal is more stable. For a 100Mb/s LAN, expect to see at least 50Mb/s across the adapters. I was also able to set up a network connection with my neighbor's apartment in the same building -- I think we are on the same electrical main. This 500Mb/s adapter does seem to work faster than the earlier 200Mb/s AV spec adapters. ZyXel make high quality network gear and support online and by phone is excellent. I have had good luck with their wired firewall and WiFi routers as well.

Cons: The plugs on these are three prong, so you can only plug them in one way -- you can't flip them upside down to keep the second wall socket free. Note to Zyxel engineers -- it would be nice if you could pull the plug out, flip it upside down, and plug it back into the adapter. Also, these are large adapters and may partially block the second plug on a wall socket. They only leave enough room to plug in an ordinary flat plug in the second socket. These adapters should be redesigned to conserve space for the second wall socket plug -- check out the newer Trendnet adapters to see what I'm talking about. These adapters will work through a surge protector, but I noticed that the performance is greatly diminished. For best results, you need plug them directly into the wall socket and you may want to avoid having them plugged into the same socket as a motor driven device or fluorescent lamp – anything that will generate RF. You might want to experiment to see which wall outlets work best.

Other Thoughts: Powerline is the way to go if you want to connect over long distances or on different floors, or don't want to mess with setting up and securing a WiFi connection. Powerline is also the way to go if you want to stream video to your TV and don't have a hard wire Ethernet connection. You will get much better performance compared to WiFi and a more stable connection.
