2 out of 5 eggsDisappointing reliability/flexibility

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps Starter Kit 2 Units PLA4215KIT

Pros: Easy initial setup, OK but not great speeds (when they stay connected). has power plug pass-through

Cons: Intermittent disconnects, sometimes requiring unplug/re-plug sequence to recover. This has been getting steadily worse over time. Big enough that it obstructs the other plug in an outlet pair making the pass-through plug a necessity. When using the pass-through power for plugging in my TV, network connectivity failed as soon as the TV went on. Moved back to a less convenient location to even be able to connect most of the time. Speed only marginally better than my old Netgear 85 Mbps setup at that outlet, but less reliable.

Other Thoughts: I would not buy these again -- no actual benefit for the additional cost. Have been living with these until I see something that gives an actual improvement in maintaining connection.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor Performance

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps Starter Kit 2 Units PLA4215KIT

Pros: Installation and setup is easy.

Cons: Even though these claim 500 Mbps measuring the perform with the ZyXEL utility shows performance is only 100 Mbps. I even reached out to their support for help, since I used their Utility that is included with the product they could not dispute the measurements. The support of no help, their only suggestion was to make so the unit was not near any large applicances, which mine was not. Support is also slow, 24 hours between each reponse and they will only make 1 suggestion per response.

Other Thoughts: If you are looking to just get a connection to a room where wireless does not reach and 100 Mbps or less is acceptable this is an okay product. I wish I can return my purchase for a refund.

5 out of 5 eggsDid Exactly What I Wanted

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps Starter Kit 2 Units PLA4215KIT

Pros: Quick and easy setup, included software was not necessary. It just plain ole works! Period

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: For me, the supplied software utility wasn't really necessary. With it, you can ID boxes on the network that are Powerline along with their MAC addresses, you can also get transmit rates and change the name of the powerline network that is generated when two of these things are plugged in. You can also password encrypt the data buzzing around your electrical circuit, but, for me, there's really no need for that. Also, the Firmware tab in the software simply leads to their website.

Kit was purchased to supply my bedroom with "wired" connectivity for my Roku which choked on the mediocre wireless signal in the house. Roku sleeps, wakes up, and nary a missed step. Connection is instant and full throttled - all movies and streaming content play without a hiccup. Utility shows 22Mbps out and 35Mbps in, but I haven't really tested it because...well, because it's working for me.

Would definitely (and already have) recommend to others.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps Starter Kit 2 Units PLA4215KIT

Pros: Products work great, I have been in IT for 18 years and tried other manufacturers. I rely heavily on reviews and recommendations from other users, then I test on my own after purchasing.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I also called support on some network design questions, also to test support accessibility. They were good and addressed all info.

2 out of 5 eggsZyXEL

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps Starter Kit 2 Units PLA4215KIT

Pros: It does provide the powerline outlet on it.
Once connected, there is not much fluctuation. so it provides constant supply of connection.
For my setup, PS3 at the bottom floor draws internet connection via ZyXEL from 2nd floor DSL connection. If the movie file is in the desktop upstairs then PS3 is able to play it without any buffering and 720 resolution.
I could not achieve this performance from PS3 when it was WIFI connected to PC upstairs.

Cons: The design of ZyXEL is bulky and not well engineered as it blocks/covers/hides the top power outlet when connected on the lower power outlet. So, one two power outlet (top and bottom) is completely used (top outlet is wasted) is used by this produce.
The performance somehow lacks. In my home, my DSL modem provides 11.5 Mb/sec download speed to ZyXEL at the 2nd floor room. Now, 2nd ZyXEL is connected to PS3 at the bottom floor. PS3's network test measure internet download speed not more than 9.2 Mb/sec. So it drops about 2 Mb/sec in download speed. Which has significant impact at the performance e.g. when streaming movies from Net Flex.

Other Thoughts: This product certainly needs improvement in Design and performance. Or the price should be not more than $25 in 2013.
For price to design and performance, the ratting of the product is below average.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat alternative to wireless

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps Starter Kit 2 Units PLA4215KIT

Pros: Power pass-thru
Easy, 1 button setup (encryption)
Works with other brands without interference (TP-Link)

Cons: larger than most units (but does have power pass-thru)

Other Thoughts: Works great with TP-Link without interference. TP-Link running my AppleTV3, Zyxel running my Dlink and now can stream 1080 with no delay..... yippee.

5 out of 5 eggsPLA4215KIT interoperability with CISCO PLK300

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps Starter Kit 2 Units PLA4215KIT

Pros: I generally don’t write reviews, I am writing here because I want to share some information I was desperately looking for before buying a homeplug unit. This unit works seamlessly with my existing CISCO PLK300 unit. I was trying to search over the internet a product which I could use to extend my existing homeplug network. CISCO PLK unit is combination of model number PLE300 which is the entry point [to be connected to router] and model number PLS300 which is the exit point of the network. ZyXEL PLA4215KIT has no such specification any unit out of 2 can be connected to the router. Other unit works as a client automatically. If there is already a unit connected to the router [cisco PLE300] , both units of PLA4215KIT works like client to that unit. So in summary, I have PLE300 connected to router as entry point, I have 3 exit points, 1 unit of PLS300 and 2 units of PLA4215KIT. Hope this helps who is looking for interoperability of homeplug units. I have not enabled encryption in my setup.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent product

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps Starter Kit 2 Units PLA4215KIT

Pros: It works!

I have a router placed over 200 feet from my house that collects the signal from a neighbor that is kind enough to share his internet with me. The Zyxel is hooked to the extension cord and from there, it brings the signal back to my home... over 250 feet of extension cord has been used to power my wireless router.

This little device is currently sending 100mbs and received 72mbs through wiring that is dating from the 90s. Even with all the other rooms and wiring in my house, this thing works like a charm and allows me to get internet to my two towers, laptop and iPad... it works wonderfully!

Thanks, ZyXel!

Cons: I didn't buy this model first...

I purchased a bargain one and I got what I paid for...

Other Thoughts: While many of the other users of the Ethernet Over Powerline have had complaints of the poor performance between the various rooms of their homes and businesses, this device has worked wonderfully for the application I put it to.

I didn't expect it to have more then 50 or 60mbs performance, but it has really surprised me with what it has done.

I still have more testing to do to see if it plays World of Warcraft or League of Legends with little to no lag on more than one computer at a time. I'll write back later when I get that testing done.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps Starter Kit 2 Units PLA4215KIT

Pros: I live on the 1st floor in 6 floor appartment building (about 50 years old) and it works through the meters (in the basement) for my neighbour (she also lives on the 1st floor). Getting minimum 25/25 Mbps with 0 drops.

Cons: none so far

4 out of 5 eggsStable

This review is from: ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 Mbps Starter Kit 2 Units PLA4215KIT

Pros: Sitting stable 7% network utilization 100 Mbps on the windows task manager. The router it is hooked up to only has 100 Mbps connections (yeah it is old and due for replacement) - but I wanted to make sure these devices where not the bottle neck. I ran a transfer for a solid 8 hours and did not have any drops - my wireless would drop at least ever hour.

I had a couple of 200 Mbps powerline ethernet adaptors (different brand) and I would barely get 1% network utilization 100 Mbps on the windows task manager and it would not be stable at all (dropping all the time).

Cons: The included software is a bit weak. It would have been a bit nice to have include software to display, in real time, the speed between the two devices. Although you really do not need the software include to to get going.

Other Thoughts: I will need to find some better software to monitor the actual through put of the devices.

I can hardly wait for the the 1000 Mbps adaptors to come out.
