2 out of 5 eggsZyXEL 500Mbps Mini Powerline Adapter Kit (PLA4201KIT)

This review is from: ZyXEL 500 Mbps Mini Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit (PLA4201KIT)

Pros: - PnP
- Consistent
- Low Price on Sale.

Cons: - Slow Transfer Speed (no more than 9Mbits/sec).
- Cannot connect to an unmanaged switch.
- Difficult to link multiple adapters.

Other Thoughts: I was hoping to get some PLA's that actually gave reliable consistent transfers for streaming from a media server to a HDTV without the need to run ethernet lines in a high traffic area. These ZyXEL PLA's were on sale and I have had reasonable results with this brand in the past.

I tried these out by connecting these adapters to the same outlet and testing the maximum possible transfer speed for a large media file. The maximum speed I was able to achieve from one SSD to another SSD through gigabit ethernet cables and SATA III busses was 1.18Mbytes/sec or 9.44Mbits/sec. I connected the PLA's up to various outlets on different circuits (all new 12 ga. romex) and was not able to get a higher transfer speed than the 9.44Mbits/sec from the first test.

I tried transferring MP3 files and achieved a maximum transfer speed that was lower of about 960KBytes/sec or about 7.5Mbits/sec.

I tried transferring mixed files of data (MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint) files and was only able to achieve a maximum transfer rate of approximately 350kBytes/sec or about 2.8Mbits/sec.

Other PLA's that I have tried are able t achieve much higher maximum transfer rates than these ZyXEL PLA's. If you need to transfer a media file or data of any size (like a movie) from one device to another, do NOT buy these adapters. I was very disappointed in the transfer rate of these adapters.

It is possible to stream one media file from a server or HTPC at this rate if it isn't super high quality, 3D, or 4K. Those would exceed the transfer rate of these adapters. The transfer speed was very consistent, even if it was slow.

In conclusion, I cannot recommend these ZyXEL PLA's even when they are on sale. Other PLA's from different manufacturers like TP-Link sell an equivalent PLA for the same money which have higher transfer rates. They may be more inconsistent in terms of transfer speeds but they are faster. If you absolutely cannot get wireless signal to your receiver or cannot use CAT5 or CAT6 ethernet cable to connect your device, these ZyXel PLA's are better than nothing. I gave them 2 eggs because they were easy to connect (truly PnP) and were consistent enough to be able to stream some content from my server to an HDTV without hangups when there was nothing else on the electrical circuit to cause interference. I would have purchased other PLA's if I knew these ZyXEL PLA's were so limited in transfer speed.

None of the PLA's I have tested from any manufacturer have had transfer speeds higher than about 130Mbits/sec total transfer rate even when they have gigabit (T1000) ethernet ports on them. None of the manufacturers I have tested ever come close to the numbers they tout in their ads or on the box. The manufacturers claim that they have these high internal transfer rates between adapters (ZyXel claims 500Mbits/sec) for this adapter, but never achieve anything like the speeds in real life applications.

5 out of 5 eggsLegit

This review is from: ZyXEL 500 Mbps Mini Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit (PLA4201KIT)

Pros: Wired internet stability
Decent speeds
Connects instantly

Cons: I do not get the maximum speed our internet plan offers

Other Thoughts: I am in the basement and wifi was a nightmare. I was able to get faster speeds from 5ghz(between 18-20Mb up/1Mb down) but nearly every day I had to mess with the antenna's and it was very annoying(too say the least).
Online gaming and HD streaming was a nightmare at times.

Now I have a constant 16Mb/1Mb(our plan is 26Mb up 1Mb down) my last ping test came back at 25 ms 2ms jitter and online gaming has been great.

I would definitely recommend this to someone who has a desktop or gaming console and cannot direct wire into the router. I guess if you have a really long Ethernet cable you could hook it up to your laptop and trip anyone that walks by too.

I only have one of these hooked up and I cannot tell you how well they work with more then one.

I did have a problem getting them to connect to each other once I pressed the encrypt button but all you have to do is hook everything up close to each other and press both reset buttons.(making sure the lights flicker on each one and then waiting a few seconds) Once they are communicating with each other you can put the second one wherever you like(mine are definitely on different breakers)

If you are on a faster internet plan you may want to look into different options because I do not know what speeds you could expect at far distances. I am guessing even if we had a 50 Mb plan I would still only get 16 Mb and I can understand someone being quite annoyed with that.

If I was not so far away or we had a better router I would choose wireless 5ghz.

3 out of 5 eggsGood... when it worked

This review is from: ZyXEL 500 Mbps Mini Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit (PLA4201KIT)

Pros: - Cheap
- Get the job done

Cons: - Not reliable, kept dropping connections

Other Thoughts: Was lazy to run a ethernet cable to the basement, so got these instead. They were great when they worked, but they were losing connection several times a day and had to be power cycled to get the connection back. After a few days of hassle, decided it wasn't worth it and returned them and got a 50ft ethernet cable - now Gigabit speeds for $5 - yeah!!

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great and instantly

This review is from: ZyXEL 500 Mbps Mini Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit (PLA4201KIT)

Pros: Connected instantly which was very nice, plugged in the side that goes to the router first, then the end that goes to my computer. My house is a three level house, and my router is in the basement. My room is in the opposite corner of the house and on the top floor, so the maximum distance I could get and it worked flawlessly. Tested this vs a straight ethernet cord, and I got the same speeds. My antenna connector on my wifi card built into my motherboard broke or something and stopped connecting to the internet, so I was running off my phones usb hotspot for a long time. The speeds are atleast triple and my phone was a 4G LTE hotspot. My home internet isnt the fastest but I maxed out my download and upload with this so it works great and no lag.

Phones 4G LTE Hotspot:
Ping: 83
DL: 1.76mb/s
UL: 0.10mb/s

Powerline Adapter:
Ping:23
DL: 5mb/s (Max my internet can do no matter what)
UL: 0.75mb/s (Max my internet can do no matter what)

Cons: Ethernet cords for both sides are only 2 feet long

Other Thoughts: Would definetly buy more if needed for other computers in the house. Cannot be plugged into a power strip, needs to be straight into the wall which can be a pain for some due to the short cords.

4 out of 5 eggsworks great

This review is from: ZyXEL 500 Mbps Mini Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit (PLA4201KIT)

Pros: Much improved over AV200 Netgear unit and 3-4 times faster than first gen netgear unit from 2007. Internet download speeds increased from 18MB/sec download to 40-50MB/sec download (matching speeds for PC connected to router through gigabit switch). Easy to use, didn't bother with bundled software. Just plugged units in and they found each other within a couple minutes and paired. Have not turned on encryption yet.

Cons: none.

1 out of 5 eggsBad experience

This review is from: ZyXEL 500 Mbps Mini Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit (PLA4201KIT)

Pros: None so far.

Cons: Units will not pair, no matter which outlets I plug them into (even the same outlet, let alone the same circuit) they will not pair up. Secondly, I installed the CD software on one of my Windows Vista PC's and now I keep getting a pesky message popping up that says some USB item is not working properly, but there is no un-installation routine for the program that I can find. :<(

Other Thoughts: Hopefully I got a defective unit. From everyone else's review, it appears that these are good units. I have emailed the ZyXEL support mail box and these are supposed to be warrantied for 2 years. I have only owned for about 6 months, but it takes forever to see if you are the one who is not installing them correctly, or if you happened to get a bad unit. If ZyXEL takes care of me, I will update my post.

4 out of 5 eggsInvest in this instead of wireless

This review is from: ZyXEL 500 Mbps Mini Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit (PLA4201KIT)

Pros: As soon as I plugged them in they started working, it reduced my lag in game from 60 ms to 20 ms, it boost my online speeds from 20 download 15 upload to 30 download 25 upload. It also completely reduced my jitter to 0! Best networking buy I've ever had!

Cons: The only con is the cables that came with them are too short. They were so unreasonable and I had to go out and buy longer ones.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding

This review is from: ZyXEL 500 Mbps Mini Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit (PLA4201KIT)

Pros: Easy to pair and worked with no effort. I use this to connect my Yamaha AV to my computer. Streams music beautifully.

We did some painting that required us to remove one of the units. When we returned the unit, it resumed its connection like it was never removed.

Cons: None so far and I don't expect any.

Other Thoughts: Both devices are on the same circuit so I know it helps. I don't know if it is mandatory that it be on the same circuit as I've received different opinions. I do know that the speed will be reduced if it is able to connect on a different circuit.
