4 out of 5 eggsSolid DSL modem for Centurylink

Pros: Fast, stable, and consistent. Simple enough to set up without too much trouble if one has all the information needed from the ISP and is not trying to set up anything advanced. I myself had the modem up and running, connected to the internet with no problems in about 20 minutes (which included a 5-10 minute call to my ISP to get the relevant information). The only real trouble came in trying to do some more advanced setup (see cons).

Cons: The instruction manual. Very poorly written, with some confusing language and references to things one may not actually see when setting up the modem, as well as a lack of relevant information for certain setups. I was attempting to set the modem up as a bridge to my wireless router and the instructions for doing this are quite insufficient. Luckily I had my mobile phone to be able to search for more help online, however one has to be careful when doing so. Be sure to look up the instructions for this exact model (660R-F1) because there are multiple 660 models, but the setup UI is quite different between them. Suffice to say in this particular model, the bridging capability is hidden away from the more standard setup options, and once found is very easy to enable. However, finding the option is quite unintuitive. It was quite a headache figuring this part out in setting up the modem, as setting up certain things wrong would make it necessary for a factory reset and starting all over again. Figuring everything out at this stage took me roughly an hour. This could have been totally mitigated had the manual been decent.

Other Thoughts: I'm using this particular modem for Centurylink DSL on a 7Mb/s connection, and am seeing roughly 6+ on average. My previous modem was on the way out and was only getting speeds of about 3 to 3.5 and would drop the connection quite frequently. So far this modem has been rock solid since I got everything set up. Something to note is that even though Zyxel has modems that are supported by Centurylink, they will not be able to help you setting this particular one up. Therefor it's very important that before you disconnect any previous setup (if you have it) to go into your current modem's setup and write down any and all relevant information, such as VPI and VCI encapsulation settings, etc. I say this because even though the manuals online, from the box, and the centurylink support rep told me I shouldn't have to change any of the default values, I did have to change certain things to how my previous modem had been set up.

Overall I'm quite pleased with this piece of equipment. Especially for the price. Purchasing this modem allowed me to get a much better wireless router than would have been available had I purchased one of the modem/router combos from Centurylink. Minus the somewhat arduous bridging setup, I have had no problems whatsoever, and really, the bridging headache would have been completely avoidable had I just had all the right information up front. So, I would absolutely recommend this modem to anyone on Centurylink, so long as you heed my words of caution and make sure you have some comprehensive instructions before setting everything up.

5 out of 5 eggsGood modem

Pros: Initially I purchased the $100 CenturyLink C1000A wireless router with DSL modem sold at BB in an attempt to improve my 6Mbps DSL service to something closer to the 10Mbps that I signed up for. It helped improve speed but I returned that product because I was disappointed with the limited range. This modem is also approved for use with CenturyLink service and it costs a lot less. It replaces a previous model of the 660R that I used for many years. The old modem still works, but my Speedtest results increased substantially with this new modem. I use the modem with a Cisco Linksys WRT160N router which is still working well and has no problems with range in a large house. I also replaced the old phone line and Ethernet cable and that resulted in a very minor improvement in speed. I am delighted to have a better Speedtest result than I did with the CenturyLink C1000A for a fraction of the cost.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The modem heats up. I do not know whether this caused the old modem to degrade over time, or whether the new modem simply has better performance than the old one. In any event, the new modem solved my speed issue.

5 out of 5 eggsIt works

Pros: Easier to setup than some other brands of DSL modems. Seems to work well. Simple and small.

Cons: Only one Ethernet LAN port. Two would make it a little easier to program when in Transparent Bridge mode.
