4 out of 5 eggsWorks great

This review is from: ZyXEL 500 Mbps Fast Ethernet Powerline Wall-Plug Pass-thru Adapter, Starter Kit - 2 Units (PLA4211KIT)

Pros: Prior to purchasing the ZyXEL 500 I was getting 30 ms ping 10 mbps download and 6 mbps upload on wifi. Plugged in the two devices and my speeds went to 9 ms ping 42 mbps download and 6 upload which is near the 50/10 mbps ISP advertised speeds. Huge improvement without rewiring the house with cat 5. It worked straight out of the box with Linux mint OS and Windows 7.

Cons: I've had a few, brief disconnections of my service while browsing the web that were related to the ZyXEL. I tried to ping the router down stream from the desktop and got three packets sent zero returned. This lasted for approximately one minute but then the connection reestablished as if it never stopped. I have not investigated further.

Other Thoughts: I have not tried out the encryption option on the device. I also found the instructions where lacking for this particular device. The paper manual instructs you to visit the website for additional information, but the PLA4211KIT is not listed in the drop menu of devices. This isn't a deal breaker for me but I'd like to read more about the encryption feature and I could see a person with very little networking experience becoming confused as to where to put the device in their connection scheme. Final notes, a Google search revealed that circuit breakers and surge protectors in between the route of the two ethernet plugs will result in a deteriorated connection / high packet loss so keep that in mind. Also if your neighbor is a HAM radio operator these devices produce a lot of noise, you may want to have a chat with her before you make a silent enemy.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well

This review is from: ZyXEL 500 Mbps Fast Ethernet Powerline Wall-Plug Pass-thru Adapter, Starter Kit - 2 Units (PLA4211KIT)

Pros: Does the job. Simple set up, plug in and go. Three indicator lights, the left is the unit's power status, the middle is the network status (if it's connected to another adapter and if so at what speed) and the right is ethernet cable activity.

Cons: The encryption is not easy to set up or to figure out if it's working. The instructions say press the button on the side for two seconds, then within 2 minutes, do the same on the other adapter. I did that and nothing happened. I'm assuming it's working? I can't be sure though. The manual is of little use, and there's not much other useful information out there about these units.

This is why I knocked the egg off. Poor documentation, documentation provided doesn't work when followed (or, if it does, no way to tell the encryption actually worked).

Other Thoughts: Speed isn't too bad. I live in a condo complex so the wifi congestion makes wifi in my bedroom worthless. I get about 5-6MBps throughput between PCs using these adpaters (between 40 and 50 Mbps). I was hoping for a little more than 10% link efficiency, but since wifi speeds are measured in Kbps in my bedroom, 40Mbps is a big improvement. It probably has more to do with my home wiring than anything else.

I like that these adapters are compatible with a wide set of standards (HomePlug AV, IEEE 1901, IEEE802.3/3u). If I ever want to add another, I will have lots of choices for compatible adapters

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Well, But You Need to Know ...

This review is from: ZyXEL 500 Mbps Fast Ethernet Powerline Wall-Plug Pass-thru Adapter, Starter Kit - 2 Units (PLA4211KIT)

Pros: These units will provide you reliable 10/100+ ethernet speeds in unwired areas WiFi can't reach. They can be used to extend your WiFi by providing wired access to wireless repeaters or access points.

There are a couple of things you need to know to make these work reliably:
1. Use the included software to set up a named network. Once the network name is in each unit, they will connect without having to go through the complicated dance required if you use the side-buttons.
2. Use the software to turn off power saving mode. Power saving causes the network to disconnect intermittently, leading to much of the grief people are complaining about in their reviews. If you connect these to a network switch, the switch will keep them active, so you can leave power saving on (but it will never be invoked.)
3. Remember that like WiFi, Ethernet-over-Powerline is a SINGLE data bus. That means that all the active units connected share the bandwidth. Five units means "Max bandwidth/5". This rule also applies to WiFi. If this is inadequate, wire your installation and use a switch.
4. I have found it is best NOT to plug these into a power strip. Power strips contain surge suppression circuits that act as filters, either removing or reducing your signal.
5. Just like a regular wired installation, distance is an issue.
6. Remember that if you have a whole-house surge suppressor, it may act to absorb some of the signal.
7. Unlike some home automation standards such as X10, this technology works across different power phases since it uses the neutral conductor.

Cons: No cons, except that like ALL electronics, they are prone to failure. I have had a couple of these die on me (I have installed about 40+ of these.) I agree that they could be more reliable, but then consider the price compared to wiring your installation.

The only CON is listening to the negative feedback by incompetent users. These units are NOT plug-and-play. Some technical competency and the ability to read are required to make these work.

A hardwired Cat5e or Cat6 installation is ALWAYS better, so don't expect miracles.

Other Thoughts: I wish that reviewers would be honest about their technical competency. You are not level four (in my opinion) if you can't make these work.

For full disclosure: I own my own technical IT consulting business. Have been active in IT for 20 years, and am a former research physicist. I think I can honestly claim to be level five.

5 out of 5 eggsNo Wires to Run...

This review is from: ZyXEL 500 Mbps Fast Ethernet Powerline Wall-Plug Pass-thru Adapter, Starter Kit - 2 Units (PLA4211KIT)

Pros: The Pass-thru adapter makes this product better. Do you do have need to dedicate a outlet to on EOP adapter. The speed is faster then wires.

Cons: no cons

4 out of 5 eggsNearly Doubled My Interwebs

This review is from: ZyXEL 500 Mbps Fast Ethernet Powerline Wall-Plug Pass-thru Adapter, Starter Kit - 2 Units (PLA4211KIT)

Pros: - Easy to install (just plug 'em in)
- Has power pass-through
- Much better connection than wifi (see below)

Cons: - Instructions are terrible (albeit uneeded)
- Unit is just slightly too tall and might interfere with something plugged into an outlet above it

Other Thoughts: I was curious about the internet speed I could get by switching from wireless N to this Power Line Adapter. I was impressed to find that I went from about 15 Mb/s over wifi to about 26 Mb/s with this device (according to Speedtest.net)

I did run into one problem setting this up. I completely shut down my computer every night, and when I would turn it back on the next day, I was having problems establishing a connection. My work around that solved this problem was installing the management software from ZyXEL's website (version 7.0) and turning off "Power Save" on both of my units. I haven't had any problems since.

5 out of 5 eggsworks really well

This review is from: ZyXEL 500 Mbps Fast Ethernet Powerline Wall-Plug Pass-thru Adapter, Starter Kit - 2 Units (PLA4211KIT)

Pros: I plugged these in and that was all that was needed. I am getting the full upstream and downstream speed of my Internet connection. 50 down / 25 up. Speed across the internal network is fast as well. The pass through plug is also a great feature. Honestly, didn't think they would work. Really impressed.

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsNote to Tim

This review is from: ZyXEL 500 Mbps Fast Ethernet Powerline Wall-Plug Pass-thru Adapter, Starter Kit - 2 Units (PLA4211KIT)

Pros: This is just a response to the Tim. You can simply unscrew your outlets and turn them upside down. Then the adapter will point up and you can easily fit your cords. (You don't have to be an electrician to do this - if you are careful you don't even need to turn your power off to the outlet, but I would because I just don't do careful)

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: See Pros.

5 out of 5 eggsIt works

This review is from: ZyXEL 500 Mbps Fast Ethernet Powerline Wall-Plug Pass-thru Adapter, Starter Kit - 2 Units (PLA4211KIT)

Pros: I own the ASUS RT-AC66R and thought that it would cover my house in wireless signal. The XBox on the other side of the house (2800 SQFT) still had inconsistent connection and the Tivo occasional connected. Once I installed these units along with a switch, everything stays connected.

Cons: The setup instructions are lacking. The YouTube videos showed old units. These newer ones you must use your PC to sync them, once synced everything works well.
