4 out of 5 eggsEasy Cofiguration

This review is from: ZyXEL 11ac Dual-Band Wireless AC1200 Router (X650)

Pros: Easy to configure

Cons: brand name

Other Thoughts: The brand is unknown to a lot of clients, but this little unit was easy for every technician who set it up and purrs like a top.

3 out of 5 eggsRecommended Only For The Adventurous or Talented

This review is from: ZyXEL 11ac Dual-Band Wireless AC1200 Router (X650)

Pros: - Good 802.11AC radio compatibility
- Good line of sight throughput
- Good value
- Gigabit Ports
- Decent Stability
- Impressive Firewall functionality and design

Cons: - Uninspired packaging and chassis design
- English Translation oversights with manual, quick reference and UI
- Mediocre signal strength and range
- UI is dated and clunky to navigate

Other Thoughts: This router is recommended for consumers with a more in-depth understanding of networking. It does feels like an evolutionary step behind it's competition though. When using 2x2 AC compatible adapters on the 5Ghz antenna in AC/N mixed mode, older N devices are getting lower than normal throughput. My testing revealed that this router is best performance-wise with line of sight communication.

Overall, this is a fun enthusiast wireless router with a lot of neat firewall features like flood detection/protection, DoS/DDoS protection, and granular IGMP that will go unnoticed by a vast majority of users.

Signal leaves a lot to be desired. It's effective range for high bandwidth setups is not that great..if you are 150 feet away from the router, do not expect AC speeds. If you are 10 feet away with a fast internet uplink, then it'll perform admirably.

This would be a great home router for a geek. Zyxel has some really impressive mid-level and enterprise equipment and you can see where it gets it's inspiration from. I can definitely see where is unit could potentially frustrate people with less industry experience. If you want to get your feet wet with 802.11AC,

5 out of 5 eggsRunning smooth

This review is from: ZyXEL 11ac Dual-Band Wireless AC1200 Router (X650)

Pros: I have had been using this router for about a month now. Since getting it for doing an Eggxpert Review

After a month of use, the router is having absolutely no issues. It has ran longer without problem than any router I can remember, and never has even needed rest.

Firmware was easy to update. This router which already features practically every software feature available on a router today did not get any new features, but I am sure it probably has basic errors fixed which were not even noticeable.

I have now made use of the port forwarding option and firewall blocking options that i did not test before.

Port Forwarding was quick and simple to set up, and functioned without any issue what so ever. The simplest I have ever seen for implementing this feature.

Blocking sites by giving the device a tabooed word or IP also worked perfectly and refused to allow me to any sites that contained the tabooed word.

Cons: As others have mentioned, it is a little pricey, and I do wish it had USB ports, which is becoming a fairly standard feature anymore.

Other Thoughts: Overall, this router is working perfectly and performing exactly as it should. it does everything I need. The mark of a good network device is that it works without ever needing worked with or thought about, and this device does that with plenty of extra features.

It is an excellent device and I am sure that I will have it in use somewhere for many years to come. For more information, please see my previous review.

1 out of 5 eggsExtra-ordinarily Poor Performance

This review is from: ZyXEL 11ac Dual-Band Wireless AC1200 Router (X650)

Pros: None.

Cons: The router performance is unsatisfactory. When opening a browser folder with several web pages the router takes twice as long as an old 802.11g-only router to complete the download and then approximately one half of the web pages are corrupted and unreadable. It appears that these web pages were only partially loaded.

1 out of 5 eggsUpdate after a week

This review is from: ZyXEL 11ac Dual-Band Wireless AC1200 Router (X650)

Pros: Doesn't take up much room in the garbage can.

Cons: After my initial review where i had issues getting wireless devices to associate, it worked for a few days, well.
Now i can again no longer associate with either of the bands. Rebooting does not help, in fact i just get erratic connect\disconnect behavior.

Other Thoughts: Garbage. I'm sure the chipset in this thing is half decent because it was fast for the short amount of time it worked.

5 out of 5 eggsnew firmware v 1.04

This review is from: ZyXEL 11ac Dual-Band Wireless AC1200 Router (X650)

Pros: works well

new firmware from zyxel's site, ver 1.04 , size: 2.4mb

Cons: fixed antennas

Other Thoughts: the eggspert wrote, "They list no firmware at all for the X650, so it is fair to assume that at the time of this writing, there is no firmware update yet."

You know what they say about that word "assume" ?

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: ZyXEL 11ac Dual-Band Wireless AC1200 Router (X650)

Pros: Good value for money, especially being an 802.11ac router. Simultaneous dual band, no less.

Gigabit Ethernet ports! At this price point, a dual-band router with four gigabit ports is very tough to come by – This drove me mad while looking for a new router, since I use my network to stream 1080p movies, sometimes uncompressed. Even better, the WAN port is also Gigabit, allowing >100mbps internet bandwidth, which is becoming more and more available.

Easy enough to configure in WAP/switch mode, and unlike some other routers, it doesn’t act up in this configuration.

IPv6 capable – it passed through the IPv6 addresses that my other router assigned without issue. I didn’t try to set this router up as an IPv6 DHCP server, though it seems capable.

Cons: The configuration page is clunky, and while the router can be set up quite flexibly, it lacks the ease of use and polished feel that you might expect from a mainstream router.

If you really want to read the directions, it might be tougher than you think. (See other thoughts)

Signal range is only middle-of-the-road, even on the 2.4 GHz band. No better than my previous midrange router. This would be less of an issue, had XyXEL made the antennas removable. What you see is what you get in terms of wireless range, folks.

Other Thoughts: I decided to try this router in two different modes – First as a main router to replace my current D-link router at the front of my house, and second to act as a switch and a wireless access point in the rear of my house.
The written instructions provided are quite basic, and don’t go past telling you how to log into the router settings page. There is an included CD with a full user guide, but that poses a problem for people like me who have no optical drive in their computer. The user guide is obtainable from XyXel’s website, but even that is very poorly laid out and a pain to navigate. They list no firmware at all for the X650, so it is fair to assume that at the time of this writing, there is no firmware update yet.

Replacing my current router was a snap – Switch the networking cables over, plug the router in, and in a little under a minute, I had access to the internet. There were absolutely no hoops to jump through to get basic connectivity.

The default IP address to this router is 192.168.1.1. The default login is admin, and the default password is 1234. From the main menu, you can choose to do a quick setup, which configures the router for various types of connection (it defaults to a cable modem setup, which was plug-and-play for me, so I had no need to use Quick Setup), as well as time zone and Daylight Savings options.

General Setup is much more in depth – This is where you can change DHCP settings, Wireless LAN settings/passwords, and other options like port forwarding and firewall configurations. There is also a tools section with backup and firmware upgrade options.

Setting the router up as a switch/wireless access point also went smoothly. The XyXEL took the place of my 8-port switch, and with an IP address change, turning off the DHCP server on the XyXEL, and assigning the now-access-point a static IP on my main router, I was able to connect wired and wirelessly. I could even still connect to the web-based UI. And no instability issues, or the DHCP server randomly kicking back on like the router I had previously tried to set up in this fashion. I love the better wireless access at the back of my house… I think I may have wasted $20 on that switch, because I doubt I’ll ever pull the XyXEL off of my network!

3 out of 5 eggsGood performance, Bad Interface

This review is from: ZyXEL 11ac Dual-Band Wireless AC1200 Router (X650)

Pros: Works through a wall that a DIR-655 just could muster through.
Good wired and wireless performance.
Lots of settings.
Radio on/off slider switch on the back.

Cons: The interface, awkward. Poorly translated.
Could not get cellphones to associate until i turned off the WPS.
No auto channel setting for either band.

Other Thoughts: Once setup, it performs reliably.
I was about to throw it in the garbage since I could not get and iPhone 5 nor a Nokia Lumia 920 to associate with it.
I figured i'd turn off the WPS to see if that helped and it did.
Settings for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands were separated, including WPS settings but once i disabled it on the 5Ghz the 2.4GHz started working properly too.

Not a router I would recommend to your average person, setup was awkward and I doubt most people would have figured out to disable WPS to get it to work.

Only reason i still gave it three stars is because it was fast, ethernet transfers were very smooth and wifi client association was quick. WiFi performance was a little better than a two year old Dlink DIR-655 on the 2.4GHz end.

This router might make sense to an tech savvy person looking to save some money if you can get it cheap.

3 out of 5 eggsSimple and Solid

This review is from: ZyXEL 11ac Dual-Band Wireless AC1200 Router (X650)

Pros: Excellent Performance
- 300Mb/s between 10 and 30 feet of range
- ~80 feet of signal range while maintaining 20% signal strength.
- 50Mb/s transfer speeds with 10 clients attached with various Netflix, YouTube, File transfer and other activities going on.
4 port 1GbE switch
802.11AC (if that's your thing)
Multiple configuration options for the router (AP, Bridge, Router, Firewall)
Simple Interface (more on this later)

Cons: Simple Interface (see what I did there?)
Poor documentation that makes you "press buttons and see what works" often.
Constant reboots during initial configuration.
Convoluted wording on the interface.

Other Thoughts: As soon as I got this device I attempted to install and set it up as my primary router. It worked great! But then so did my existing router... so what to do? My existing router supported DD-WRT and I really liked the feature set.
Transfer speeds of the X650 were fantastic and the range was also good. But again, no better than my existing router and in some cases the web interface made me resent this router, wishing for my DD-WRT equipped original.
For me the party piece of this router is it's ability to bridge signal to devices which have no built-in wireless. With this device attached to my wireless network at the full 300Mb/s I can stream HD BluRay movies from my media server without a problem. With the built-in 802.11G on my PS3 this wasn't possible. I was stuck running a Cat5 cable across the living room to the Den. Trip and electronics death hazard if there has ever been one. Never mind the embarrassment when you have "movie night" at your house and have to explain to your friends why your 60 inch TV and super impressive home theater is connected to a 50ft Cat5 cable going into the den...

Wow that last sentence was really smug. (1st world problems, right?)

Any who... Set this thing up as a wireless bridge and my PS3 is streaming like a... PS3 only wired... even though it's not, but is.
The connection is stable even when other end users are connected to the wireless router. The X650 takes priority and keeps the connection going. Playing a BluRay movie while others are downloading, transferring, YouTube'ing or whatever the crazy kids like to do. The X650 provides the connectivity and soldiers on.

Worth it? As a router... sure, but it'll probably give you a headache while you configure it. After that it's quiet and just keeps working.
As a wireless bridge it's a champ. It just works.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Stable

This review is from: ZyXEL 11ac Dual-Band Wireless AC1200 Router (X650)

Pros: Setup went very smoothly. Dual band always works reliably and runs 2.4GHz and 5GHz simultaneously without any problems so far. Good range on 2.4Ghz spectrum, better than my ISP supplied 2WIRE modem router combination. Simple to use interface with plenty of options for advanced operation although in my network I needed to make very few changes to have everything up and running. Complies with IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n standards on 2.4GHz and IEEE 802.11ac running at 5GHz. The WPS button works great. File transfers are considerably faster both wired and wireless than my stock router. I've had no problems streaming high definition videos over the wireless network while playing a PS3 online with 2 smart phones and a laptop also using the wireless network on both 2.4GHZ and 5GHz simultaneously with another PS3 running wired along with my PC. Shipped with the latest firmware.

Cons: Only made to lay flat with no other options for wall mounting or side mounting making it harder to find a good place for it. Interface may lack polish for some users as it is very plain looking. 5 GHz has a shorter range than 2.4GHz.

Other Thoughts: I'm very pleased with this router. I've never had a router that I wouldn't have had to reboot by now to get things back up to speed. Very solid and predictable performance. Although the 5GHz spectrum has less range my phone will change over to the 2.4GHz spectrum automatically when I walk out of range.

There is one issue with this and it's only going to affect a small number of people. My cellphone has WIFI calling capabilities that I was using all the time before this router. If you walk out of range of your network while in a call it will drop the call. Since 5GHz has a short range it's very easy to walk out of range and drop the call. I can eliminate this issue by only having my cell connect to the 2.4GHz AP and get a longer range than I had with my previous router, but I like using 5GHz so much that I just disabled WIFI calling on my cell.

The interface is very bland with very dated look to it. I actually don't mind it because it doesn't effect the router at all and once you get it setup to your liking you'll probably never look at it again anyway. I had no issues setting it up using the interface and found it easy to navigate through the simplistic menu system.

For the price this router is a great option. Simultaneous dual band is excellent. I'd recommend it to anyone.
