5 out of 5 eggsGreat little switch!

Pros: If you've used ZyXEL's other switches like the GS1910 you'll love this little switch. The web interface is a little easier to navigate than the 1910 and has some wizards available to set up LACP, and VLAN's, so if you're inexperienced it helps you along the way.

Cons: There's a power switch on the back of the unit. I can kind of understand why they'd put it there, but as a pro who's been in IT for twenty plus years, one thing that I've learned is that I don't want power switches on SOHO type networking equipment like this. Although you can't technically accidentally bump the switch and turn it off, it'd have been better to just leave it out altogether.

The other is that my unit came with a wall wart. Again it's not a deal breaker and I can understand the decision to go with it at this price point, but I'm mentioning it because another review said that theirs came with an in-line brick. I've grown to be extremely leery of wall warts over the years since they tend to fail.

Other Thoughts: At this price point it's impossible to go wrong with this switch. Granted it doesn't have all the features of the ZyXEL GS1910 switch, but then again you're not going to put this in as a core switch in an enterprise environment either. Overall it's still rather feature complete; it's more that you're limited in the number of spanning trees, guest vlan's, and static MAC addresses you can have. I'm not 100% sure if that's more of a limitation from the 1900 to the 1910/1920 series though.

Overall if you're buying this to step up from a cheap unmanaged hub or to move up from the gigabit switch that's built into your wifi router, you can't go wrong with this switch. I've only had it for a day or so but I will update my review if I experience any failures related to this switch. So far though it's working great and I couldn't be happier with it.

4 out of 5 eggsSmall with a big heart

Pros: Small footprint, configurable. It came out of the box ready to run and ready to have on operating system loaded. The video is good and it has both analog and digital ports. Comes with VESA mount. USB ports have the ability to configure each one for powering / charging devices even when the computer is asleep.

Cons: It has only four USB ports. No Parallel, no Serial and no optical device. I had to run out and procure a USB DVD before I could load the OS because of my failure to buy one with the computer. The screws that came with the VESA mount might be long enough to mount on some monitors.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this for multiple applications where space is a concern.

5 out of 5 eggsPleasantly Surprised

Pros: I've been a Network Engineer for past 20 years and have used Ciscos, Foundrys, etc.

This switch and its web interface does everything I need it to do from trunking, vlans, bundling of the ports, etc.

Cons: Haven't come across one

Other Thoughts: Inexpensive and capable switch.

4 out of 5 eggsA worthy problem solver at the desktop and endpoint

Pros: - Well-rounded complement of L2 capabilities
- Stable operation
- Ample performance
- Web-based (non-proprietary) management UI
- Convenient in-line brick power adapter rather than a wall-wart

Cons: Although the admin UI is sufficiently usable, it has a tendency to log you out unexpectedly and lose your changes, which causes extra work and is somewhat disappointing.

Other Thoughts: If you need L2 features and manageability in less-critical applications or in hard-to-reach places, this switch offers the features and performance of switches that cost considerably more, and makes fewer compromises than similarly-priced models. I needed to untag VLANs and disable EEE at someone's desk without having to buy a full-on enterprise switch, and this is doing that perfectly.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat switch

Pros: 1) Good build
2) Works well out of box with minimum to no configuration as a standard un-managed switch.
3) Web interface is smooth .
4) Dual firmware to prevent bricking or bad firmware uploads.
5)

Cons: 1) An automatic backup / scheduled backup would be nice.
2) Have to explicit save config changes.
3) A CLI access would have been icing on the cake.

Other Thoughts: Great deal/pricing. However the difference btw the 8 port and 16 port is relatively high for the same feature set (except port density).
Works well with a dd-wrt router's trunk port with multiple VLANs on LACP interface

1 out of 5 eggsErratic, Flaky = Defective

Pros: Nice little package for a layer 2 switch. Quite fanless operation.

Cons: since receiving item, the access has always been inconsistent. 192.168.1.1 was the default, supposedly. tried it with internet explorer, chrome, firefox, opera, maxthon browsers, all yield similar inconsistent manageability. i set it aside for a week for additional research. when i tried to use it again, the switch was unmanageable through the browser. i reset it, still nothing. NOT RECOMMENDED!!!

Other Thoughts: throughout this ordeal, the customer service of newegg came out shining. despite all the disappointments that came with this zyzel product, newegg RMA process & customer service came through with fast and pleasant resolutions.
Final Thoughts: Newegg - Excellent; Zyzel - garbage!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat switch

Pros: - Easy to use
- Nice interface
- Great features

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Great switch at a great price point. The network storm feature helped me to isolate a network flood on my network. It gives options to either disable the port or drop the extra packets. Prior to this device, I had to run around unplugging all 5 of the switches and routers in my house to fix it.

Also, one reviewer mentioned a 3 minute timeout in the control console. This can be increased under Configuration tab -> Management -> HTTP/HTTPS

4 out of 5 eggsGreat switch for advanced home use

Pros: Great 8port switch for advanced home use. Loaded with features and supports options that professinal switches have - i.e.: VLANs, Port Mirroring, PoE , QoS, AAA, LAG, LLDP, and the list goes on.

Cons: Just like the review I left of the GS-1900-8HP, the web interface use for management tends to randomly timeout and kick you out. Not a big deal as it saves the data in the running config and all you have to do is to login again.

Other Thoughts: I have 3 of these ZyXEL switches and I'm using them for it's VLAN and LAG capabilities with my home NAS/iSCSI server and VMware ESXi 5.5 - works great for that purpose. I'm hoping that ZyXEL will release a new firmware version soon that will make the web management interface a little more stable.
