4 out of 5 eggsZyXel GS1900-24E GbE Smart Switch - Great, So far

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1900-24E 24-Port Desktp Fanless GbE L2 Smart Managed Switch

Pros: - Low Cost on Sale.
- Solid Costruction. Metal Case & High Quality Ports.
- Rack Mounting Hardware Included.
- Fanless Design and Silent.
- Simple Web Interface for Easy Setup.
- Many Features (LAG, QOS, VLAN, MAC Filtering, etc.)
- Does Everything I Want A Managed Switch To Do.

Cons: - IP Address is Preset to 192.168.1.1 which is the same as many routers.
- User Manual is Unclear and Poorly Written.
- Port Indicator Light Array Design is REALLY BAD. Not intuitive and you have to actually read the port number below to determine the actual port where the status is indicated.

Other Thoughts: I have the 16-port and 24-port versions of this switch as well as the GS1910-24 managed switch. I also have a variety of the ZyXel unmanaged GbE switches. I am very pleased with the ZyXel switches since they have been trouble free performers for several years.

I like the web interface of the GS1900 switches. It is more modern and seems to be more stable than the firmware on the GS1910 series. I updated the FW to the latest ver 2.10.

These switches do everything that the much more expensive Netgear and Cisco switches do. And, the fanless design is silent - a significant plus for a SOHO environment where the switch is located near people.

I was most interested in the Link/Port aggregation feature along with the ability to create VLAN's with this switch. The web based firmware has a wizard to make these functions simple and easy to implement. You can create as many port aggregates as you want with these GS1900 series switches. More than the TP-Link "smart" switches. Remote switch monitoring is also easy to do with these switches.

Aside from the poorly written and somewhat difficult to understand users manual, there are only two problems that I have with these switches.

First, is that the IP address of the switch is 192.168.1.1 which is the same address as a variety of routers. If you don't do your research in advance and just plug the switch into a network, you will never get a connection to the switch. You have to reconfigure your router first to a different IP address then connect the switch and change the IP address to something else. Not a big deal once you have done it before, or are aware of that before setting up the switch. A minor problem in other words.

The second problem I have with the switch is much more important. The Port Indicator Light Array configuration is REALLY BAD. I would use harsher words if they let me. In the 16-port version, there are two rows of lights with the light corresponding to the same port position in the row. Pretty standard. With the GS1900-24E, the lights have no correlation to the port position and you have to actually read the port number under the light to determine which port it corresponds to. You may be able to memorize the light-to-port correspondence and be able to read them from a distance but I don't have the time or desire to do that. It is irritating in the extreme. Some people would also call this a minor issue at best. Given that I have not had port or switch failures before with the ZyXel switches, maybe it will become a non-issue with time. For now, that is the worst problem I can come up with for these switches.

In conclusion, the GS1900-24E switch is the best value "smart" managed switch on the market today IMO. I purchased it from Newegg for less than US$100 which is a steal compared to any other managed 24-port switch I found anywhere. I recommend it to anyone who needs a reliable 24-port switch.
