2 out of 5 eggsGood to certain degree

Pros: Generally better than wifi speed. good for people who don't want to lay wiring but want to have high speed access to internal server or other computers.

Cons: nowhere near the advertised speed. it's more like a 50-100Mb connection. finicky with outlets (some have highen speed than others even when none has other power connection). Definitely NOT for online gamers due to its notable lags.

Other Thoughts: Money will be better spent on a better router or extender if all you need is higher Internet connection.

1 out of 5 eggsZyxel PLA405Kit - Another ZyXel Product NOT to Buy

Pros: Designed to meet latest HomePlug AV1200 Spec
Compact Design

Cons: NOWHERE NEAR 1200Mbps (got barely 20Mbps FDX after trying 13 AC outlets)
NO pass-thru electrical outlets
NO bundled software to monitor performance of devices or connection
Connection repeatedly drops, requiring device(s) to be unplugged and replugged
Very sensitive to ANYTHING else plugged into adjacent AC outlet

Other Thoughts: You'd think I'd learn. Every ZyXel broduct I've ever owned (or OEMed for business) has been a lackluster performer at best. This is yet another one. Last year at this time I boughtwhat was then ZyXel's top-of-the-line (600Mbps) HomePlug product for a different house, and barely got 50 Mbps FDX after varying combinations of 7 AC outlets. This is a different house, with superior ACwiring, and yet the performance is worse than bad. Next time (if there is one) I need an ACPLC solution, I'll try one from a different manufacturer.

Having said all of the above, the vendor, and NewEgg, were fantastic. The product arrived when promised, and in perfect condition. If it had only worked.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks - chipset qca7500

Pros: It just works, just a plain Ethernet bridge. Not sure how to access the on board firmware. Found some qualcom QCA7500 tools which let you adjust settings.

Cons: Extremely over inflated speed ratings. This unit does MAXIMUM 200Mbps.
So it is basically fast ethernet speed which is the same.
My box was shrink wrapped and already opened, it was an open box marked as new.
The only setup tools have to be run in MS windows and they run based on MAC so you have to install filters, extra stack interceptors, PCAP, etc, just to communicate with it. No Linux or Mac toolbox software.

Other Thoughts: It works, if you have brown outs a lot then you can get a frozen unit so you have to unplug and plug back in.
Real speed expectations are around 150-170Mbps, which blows away the maximum I was able to get over wireless 1Mbps, but still they are lying so badly when it comes to REAL speed. I tested this using a clean sinewave generator so I could see what the real max speed was regardless of distance and noise. 200Mbps is max speed. Leave it to Asian companies to come up with fake marketing to the point of lying so they can bend over the rest of the country and extract cash rectally.
The old AV200 units never did above 1-5Mbps, so you can see there is some major deception with these things.

1 out of 5 eggsSeriously disappointed

Pros: The only pro is that is grabbed these on sale for $59.99

Cons: I purchased these to replace my 600mbs Zyxel PLA5405 set. My average speed with the 600mbs set was 50mbs. This new kit rated at 1200mbs only averages 9mbs. Absolutely nothing has changed in my setup accept updating my Zyxel adapters. I am wondering if the poor speed is due to the adapters not having filters like the previous kit?

Other Thoughts: The Tplink 1200mbs set (TL-PA8010P) has filters, wonder if they will perform better on my setup?

3 out of 5 eggsMixed Feelings

Pros: Easy to use, and better than the other HomePlug AV2 MIMO adapters on the market according to the testing I've read about. But, see "Cons", because basically they all suck.

Cons: Poor performance.

I wasn't expecting real world performance of 1200 Mbps, but these have been quite disappointing. In my intended application (running across about 40-50 feet of electric cable on the same phase) I was seeing top speeds of about 95 Mbps and fluctuations down to about 50 Mbps. In fact, I went on to test them further and even when plugged into the same outlet the best I could do was around 250 Mbps.

Based on the reviews I've read, this seems to be more of a limitation of the technology rather than these specific devices.

Other Thoughts: The outlet I tested and the circuit it was on did not have GFCI protection, but most of the circuits in my home do have GFCIs somewhere on them, so that may have something to do with the performance in my case.

I switched to MoCA 1.1 (TiVo has a great deal on a pair of adapters) and got about the same 95 Mbps (limited by the 10/100 Ethernet port on the adapter) but rock solid and with bandwidth to spare. I think I can get about 175 Mbps through the MoCA Network using multiple devices. If I had to do it over today I'd get MoCA 2.0 bridges with GigE ports.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappoint - same as previous model

Pros: New model
AV 1200 technology

Cons: Expensive and same speed as old models. not worth the upgrade.

Other Thoughts: I bought zyxel powerline products 2 years ago and when I saw the new model, even it's really expensive, I thought I'll buy it in order to get better performance etc.

Sadly, it's really the same performance. No improvements. I think you can buy the old models and get the same performance.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great!

Pros: Much faster and more reliable than I expected. Zero stability issues in 6-7 months since first put into use.

Cons: Moderate performance first week on line, but then suddenly started performing at a much higher rate and stayed that way ever since (5 months)

Other Thoughts: This unit uses a much more modern protocol than most and has no stability problems. Speedtest.net rates me at +/- 90 Mb/s on the other end of the house and down one level from were my modem is. My service is max 100 Mb/s

3 out of 5 eggsnowhere near gigabit transfer rate

Pros: It's the newest HomePlug AV2 standard which has a much faster transfer rate than the older standard. The kit includes encryption security. It's generally a plug and play setup.

Cons: My network setup is through Cat 6 cables connected to a gigabit unmanaged switch. I used LAN_SpeedTest to test the speed of the network. All the testing PC's have SSD drives to allow fast read and write tests. The usual speed via my cat 6 cable is between 600 to 700 mbps. For this test, one end is connected via cat 6 and the other end is via the ZyXEL adapter. The best speed out of this PowerLine adapter was never higher than 150 mbps anywhere within the house. This is quite adequate for normal usage such as connecting to the Internet or watching large video from the server.

Other Thoughts: As I tried out different power outlets in the house, I somehow got no connection on my third attempt. It turned out the encryption timing (i.e., how long the button is pressed and held) is literally strict. I must have held it for more than 3 seconds which practically shut down the PowerLine network. I went back to read the manual and got it back to working condition within 5 minutes.

1 out of 5 eggsVery disappointed...

Pros: none

Cons: After about 35 days the units now every few days lock up in an extremely slow mode, have to unplug both units typically twice a week and they run ok. My old Netgear AV500's had very comparable throughput compared to when the AV1200's are running "good".
Very disappointed in this product. Lack of support on manufacturers website as in no firmware updates to fix issues.

Other Thoughts: I'm going to order the D-Link DHP-701AV HomePlug AV2 AV2000 MIMO Gigabit Powerline Starter Kit and see how they run, if not good I'm going back to my tried and true AV500's.

5 out of 5 eggsDecent Product, good performance increase

Pros: I got this powerline adapter along with a new router, modem, and CAT6 ethernet cables for my new 200mbps down / 20 mbps up connection. I had an old router, modem, and Linksys PLE400 powerline adapter. With that adapter I was about to get about 10mbps down and 20 up (odd that the upload was better than download). With the new adapter, I am getting about 85mbps down and 20 mbps upload. Obviously, this isn't 1Gbit, but I wasn't expecting that. I am happy with the 8x improvement in download speed.

Setup was a breeze and encrypting was also easy.

Cons: Don't expect to get 1Gbit and you will be happy.

Other Thoughts: It is worth noting that my cell phone is able to get 200mbps down and 20 mbps upload over my new router's wifi at the location of my desktop (3 - 4 walls and about 50-70 ft away from the router). So it would of been about the same price to get the ASUS PCIExpress Wifi AC adapter but faster by another 3x.

I was going to do this, but decided instead for the powerline because there was a rebate pushing it cheaper than the PCI Express adapter. I may in the future get the PCI Express adapter if the powerline adapter has another use.
