4 out of 5 eggsReview for zyxel pla5456kit

Pros: Tried on windows 7, windows xp and Zorin Linux machines.
Plug in one unit to your internet connection.
Plug in the other one anywhere else in the house.
Plug any computer or laptop into the second unit and you have internet access.
Tried on a circuit that was about 70 feet away from where the primary unit was attached to internet access.
These units are really plug and play.

Cons: Blocks ground hole on upper plug when inserted into the wall outlet.
It is not an issue if you are using only one plug because of the pass through outlet built in to it.

Other Thoughts: One egg off because of design, not for its operation.
Never heard of company, but bought it on the good reviews.
It was a good choice.

2 out of 5 eggs*Not Compatible with Windows 10*

Pros: -These work on my network and had no problem finding each other. A little faster the Trendnet 1200.
-Has two Ethernet ports that can be used.

Cons: -I have no control over these units. The software is not compatible with Windows 10 at all. Zero functionality in Windows 10 environment. I bought these on sale so I will wait but only 2 stars until the software gets fixed.
-Huge, cannot fit another plug into the slot above.
-Have 1000 mpbs ethernet ports, see a download of 50 mbps in a new house across GFI breakers. Have not tested in the same room.

Other Thoughts: -They work ok, but no control over security by software. Have to trust encryption that is built in.
-Advertised as compatible with Windows 10 but tech support say there is no software available yet.
-AV2 Standard but have not tried to connect to Trendnet units that I have.

Manufacturer Response:

I apologize for the trouble you seem to be having problem to have the utility work with a Windows 10 PC. Although currently the utility is not specifically designed for Windows 10, however, like many software that designed for Windows 8, the utility should work for the windows 10. We have tested the utility in our Lab, and we did not see any problem on multiple windows 10 PCs. Please try to disable anti-virus program before you install the utility since anti-virus program may cause issues during the installation process. 4 out of 5 eggsFast, robust

Pros: Much faster than the 200Mb/s pair these replaced. Operating on opposite halves of a manufactured home, so it works across junction boxes. Two ports, so can isolate part of my network using a switch on one of them. Plug and play.

Cons: Big. That it has a pass-through outlet may be insufficient, since it will block both outlets on a plate. Longevity unknown since I just bought them. I have to use 1' extension cords with these so I can use both outlets.

Other Thoughts: I use these where I want to bring wired internet connectivity into a room on the other half of our manufactured home from where the router is. Wireless hasn't always worked well, and at least two of the systems there need to directly communicate without being affected by other network devices, so these work well.
I was seeing a max of around 25Mb/s on speedtest going through the prior 200Mb/s Powerline adapter; with this I got 88Mb/s. I'll take it. I've had no dropouts or other glitches.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat deal at $59.99!

Pros: Pass thru power plug. 2 network ports. Improved download speed from my old AV200 Netgear powerline adapters, which averaged 7-15Mbps, to 40-50Mbps.

Cons: These suckers are BIG. Good thing it offers the pass thru power plug as I lose both outlets due to the large size of these. Obviously these won't get close to 2000Mbps, but I knew that before buying them. No brand powerline adapter will get close to that.

Other Thoughts: Got these for a gift for my adult son. He's quite happy with them. Only took a star off due to the large size.

1 out of 5 eggsEasy to install, but worthless to me

Pros: Plug and play - that's it

Cons: Performance is dismal

Other Thoughts: I live in a 2000 sqft single-level condo with segregated electrical service built in 2004, but it's metal-stud construction, so WiFi drop-off is dramatic. I've been looking for something more reliable than repeaters and thought I'd try these. Between the metal studs and concrete floors and ceilings, running Cat5 at this stage is prohibitive.

Connecting my laptop directly to the remote 5456, I measured a whopping 2.07 Mbps download on Ookla's Speedtest in an area of my home where WiFi is good, i.e., closer to the router. The 5456 was flashing green, so it was measuring its own transfer rate at greater than 80 Mbps - must be a ton of lost packets. Ookla actually stalled four times trying to measure download speed, presumably due to the communication quality issues, which means that 2.07 Mbps was my best result. So ... 0.1% of the "rated" speed, when it worked at all. Woo. Switching back to WiFi, I measured over 50 Mbps from the router plugged into the other 5456, so my service is fine. I can get better than 2 Mbps on my WiFi in the worst areas of my home without repeaters, so there's no point in using these.

P.S. I did try installing the remote 5456 in the same room as the local 5456 and was able to get over 20 Mbps download, but what's the point if they need to be installed in the same room to work? It's useless to me if it can't pass through a set of breakers.

2 out of 5 eggsDo not recommend

Pros: - Was able to plug in and get a connection
- Did test faster than my AV2 1000mbps

Cons: - Regularly lost sync
- Xbox 360 set as windows media center extender would freeze maybe once every 45 minutes

Other Thoughts: My use for this is for windows media extenders. I have 4 Zyxel av2 1000mbps that were not pass through that I wanted to replace with the faster speed because my menus would be a little slow moving with the current setup. This device did speed up my menus. Their downfall is that every 45 minutes or so I would experience a network hiccup that sometimes even needed me to reset the devices. This is unacceptable when compared to the slower av2 1000mbps from the same company. Very unfortunate.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Speed

Pros: None

Cons: Was trying to replace old WD Livewire 200Mbps units. Actual speed of the WD's is ~20Mbps on separate circuits.

The ZyXEL speed light flashed red and troubleshooting options don't work. Speed is less than 1Mbps down and 30Mbps up.

Moved adapters to various plugs within the same circuit, speed stayed the same. Tried plugging adapters into each other, no change in speed.

House is 15 years old so wiring shouldn't be a problem.

Other Thoughts: Seems like a hit or miss product based on others getting fantastic speeds, not something worth wasting more time on so requested a refund.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat product, easy setup.

Pros: Pretty much plug and play for the set up and great speeds.

Cons: - Poor design blocks both plugs on the wall with only one plug pass through. The plug sits just low enough from the top of the unit that it blocks the upper plug from being accessible or usable.

Other Thoughts: I have not had a chance to test the second plugs yet. I would recommend these if you do not have to use both plugs or if you plan to use a power strip on the pass through.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressed with performance, even in sub-optimal configuration.

Pros: Setup was simple, and the configuration/utility software was easy to use. I tested throughput first with both connected to the same outlet (via 1' extension cables) and the utility app reported ~1,800 Mbps. In the actual configuration they're used, which includes them being on separate circuits in the house, in addition to crossing a GFCI (!), throughput is still around 175 Mbps.

Cons: It's a bit annoying that the ground plug of the upper wall socket is still somewhat obstructed. Ungrounded plugs will fit fine in the top socket, but depending on the shape and thickness of the plug, grounded cables may not. At least the pass-through guarantees you still have one usable grounded socket, but in my case I needed both on at least one end of the connection. I bought a couple sturdy 16 AWG 1-foot "outlet saver" grounded extension cables to go with them, and that makes it a non-issue.

Other Thoughts: I'm using these to connect my media center to the rest of my home network, as running ethernet cable wasn't feasible and I didn't want to deal with wireless reception/congestion issues during media streaming. It's working perfectly for this. The remote connection serves a media PC, BluRay player, and network-enabled home theater receiver via an 8-port gigabit switch.
