Fast and affordable, XTM 5 Series appliances combine firewall/VPN with powerful security services and a suite of flexible management tools. Positioned in the middle of the XTM family of unified threat management solutions, 5 Series appliances deliver strong security, up to 3.5 Gbps firewall throughput, and seven Ethernet interfaces - six GigE and one FE - to support high-speed LAN backbone infrastructures and gigabit WAN connections. IT administrators can manage security from a centralized console, scriptable CLI, and web UI. Real-time monitoring and rich reporting are included at no extra cost. Easily scales to accommodate growth.
Pros: Easy to configure. Upgrading to this newer version with 3 years of support cost less than renewing the software/support subscription of our older hardware for just 1 year (x1250e of same brand). The spam blocking feature works pretty well. It includes the server side software to collect logs and data and generate reports. The VPN software is easy to distribute, update, and use. Internet controls are easy to configure. To block specific types of content, checking a checkbox is all that needs to be done. After creating a login on the company's website, there are quite a few training videos. If you can't figure something out, just give them a call. They are glad to help.
Cons: Reports are a bit generic and some don't include the feature to export them to PDF or Excel. Sometimes, management just wants an easy to read report to see what a specific user is doing on the internet during the day. The info in the logs doesn't always report the hostname and is instead reported with just the IP address (locally and externally). Web blocking categories make things nice for setup, but it makes it a bit difficult to create exceptions (ie. Block streaming video; Some legitimate training videos are hosted on a popular video streaming site). We aren't using the most current version of the software, so some of these may have already been addressed. The spam blocker in the newer updates doesn't work quite the same way as the older version and I had trouble tweaking it to work as effectively, so I reverted ours to the older version.
Other Thoughts: For the most part, this device does what we need. If you need an easy to use spam blocking device and a way to control internet access, then this is a good device to use.
