1 out of 5 eggsPC Killer

Pros: Fast Transfer Speeds

Cons: Installed in a GigaByte GA-P5-UDL3 motherboard freezes the Windows 7 Pro 64 bit OS every couple weeks. I'll swap out the board with a built-in USB 3.0 and throw this thing away. Not worth sending back.

1 out of 5 eggsFrustrating Card

Pros: Uses the latest Renesas chipset
20 pin header
Sata xtra power connector

Cons: Could not get 3.0 speeds
Installs fine, but has issues
USB 3.0 monitor appears crippled.

Other Thoughts: I currently have an older NEC/Renesas usb 3.0 with the slightly older chipset and now xtra power connector. Works great in a Win XP machine.

I chose the Renesas chipset over the other brands, including TI, VLI, Eltron, Fresco, etc.. as it has proven to have among the fastest transfer speeds and they continually upgrade their drivers.

The card installed fine. The SATA power connector was optional per the included instructions. Recognized on a Win 7 x32 quad core. There is something very strange about this card. Neither Siig's install disk, nor the latest Renesas drivers allowed the monitor app to work. It does not show in the programs area, and when clicked on in the programs folder, it says it's already running. So you can't check to see if the install is working, nor does it indicate what firmware/driver it's running. I tried the install about 3 times and did this each time.

After install the card would only work at usb 2.0 speeds. I have 5 usb 3.0 drives and none worked at the 3.0 speed. After doing a successful backup with Acronis, I removed the drive from the system. Upon starting up again, the drive indicated that it needed to be reformatted! This happened 3 times.

I plugged this same drive into an onboard usb 2.0 port run through a belkin 7 port hub and it boots and read the drive perfectly.

Thinking it was the need for the "optional" sata port to be plugged in, I connected it. The newer Renesas chipset is supposedly "lower" power. After plugging in the power connector and rebooting, the card is no longer recognized. This is with no drive turned on. I just tried to get the card to show up in the device manager. The drivers cannot be reinstalled if the card is not recognized and it never showed up again in the Device Manager so I could not try older/newer drivers.

It appears the other review here indicated it was working fine for them, so it may be a motherboard/chipset issue. But paying to return the card and the restocking fee, will force me to pay about 40% of what the card originally cost. Try to buy these cards locally in the event they don't work.

I have an older Abit mb. Running PCI-E 1.0A slots. So speeds are limited to about 2x the speed of usb 2.0. But running weekly backups of 200gb and saving 2x the time makes it not only faster but requires less wear on my hard drives.

I'll give tech support a call, but I don't know what advice they can offer that I haven't already tried. It's not a power issue, not a bios issue. From reading the reviews of MANY usb 3.0 at the egg, it seems that there are few, if any, that really work reliably.

I will most likely return this card and I am going to try another chipset that is slower in testing, but will hopefully be more reliable.
