2 out of 5 eggsBest used as boat anchor or tire chock

Pros: This Adapter is huge! i opened the box & was taken back by the sheer magnitude of the product. I instantly felt drawn in by its gravitational pull & the excitement of a five year old boy on Christmas quickly took hold of me! The workmanship was great, the product felt sturdy, the cable it came with was generously long. It was more than any amateur wireless networker could dream of!

Cons: My excitement was short lived like pulling coal out of a stocking. The product did not work as a wireless adapter. I tried this device on three different machines (all running win7) I could get it to function on a single usb (not well), but to use it to its maximum potential to get wireless signals from the international space station, & quite possibly the moon; the device requires a second usb port. I understand to communicate with astronauts much power is needed. When plugging in the second usb (to put the device into high power mode) the device fails to connect to anything. Much like a stubborn mule, it would connect then go to the dreaded disconnect. In fact it threw up its hands & failed to display any wireless signal when you asked it to connect. I updated drivers, connected it to multiple computers, performed a rain dance, but to no luck my satellite dish is nothing more than a boat anchor.

Other Thoughts: When i had it connected on single usb i could get download & upload speeds of 250Kbytes & 200Kbytes respectively. I have a 15 dollar adapter that is literally taped to the wall & get twice those speeds.

Manufacturer Response:

angrygrub,

We apologize for the negative experience that you may have had with the UA600EX. Please give our support center a call so we can determine the cause for the slow speeds. There may be a hardware issue. Try swapping the cable and perhaps force installing the correct drivers. The link below will take you to our forums.

2 out of 5 eggsnot so Amped

Pros: It will connect alot farther than a standard wifi card.

Cons: It will not be good for gaming, streaming or using for high speed. The link strength was always near 100% but the signal strength never more than 50%. I was about 150 feet from the Amped repeater it was aimed right at. Drop outs, disconnected and very laggy.
The cable was defective out of the box and although it claims to be weather proof, there are no seals and I can see the circuit board. Maybe there is a clear sealant on the board but not my idea of weather proof.

Other Thoughts: Tech support is good, they sent me a new cable right away. Their answer to my problems was to move the WiFi antenna closer. LOL The box shows you can attach it to your RV or yacht and hit a hot spot on land. I doubt it.

Manufacturer Response:

Wookie,

We are sorry that the UA600EX did not perform up to expectations. you may want to look into different channels of operation for the network. I am not sure of which model of range extender you have but if you have clear line of sight, the UA600EX should handle a 150 foot connection with ease. Please give us a call so we can have a Tier 2 Technician help you with your troubles.

5 out of 5 eggsIt works well

Pros: High gain, directional, outdoor-proof, well designed.

Cons: No software included to differentiate between networks with the same SSID

Other Thoughts: The only thing I didn't like about this antenna was there was no way to choose which access point I was connecting to. I am deployed and the antenna would always connect to a clogged AP, rather than the unsaturated AP a few more feet away. This is a windows problem however, not a problem with the antenna.

1 out of 5 eggsterrible

Pros: works great for a couple months!

Cons: After you have this for awhile it quits working. I was having so many probs connecting to the router. Then I tried connecting without this wonderful product and low and behold I could connect with the internal adapter. Still get no signal if I connect this antenna. Service with them is great but the product just doesn't work.

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry for your negative experience with your repeater. It sounds like the repeater and router are not talking. Our device is universal so you must have a settings mismatch. Give our US based Elite Support (888-573-8820) a call and a experienced and friendly Concierge will walk you through the trouble shooting process and verify your settings are correct and you are receiving sufficient signal strength from your router.

3 out of 5 eggsOrdered 2, 1 good, 1 bad. Starting to lose faith in newegg

Pros: If you get the newer revised model, it works awesome. I'm able to connect to my schools wireless 802.11g signal from about 350'+ off campus going through 5 different brick buildings (though signal drops from time to time) - amazing. Fast speeds. I see other networks that my laptop, netbook and desktop cannot see with their built in WLAN cards.

I have yet to try this adapter with an unobstructed view of a wireless network. I can only imagine what my range will be without anything in the way degrading signal quality.

Cons: It's near junk if you get the older model. On the older model, the provided USB cord does not fit well in the UA600EX's USB port. If you try to put the cover on, it moves the USB connection just enough that it won't work at all.

If you leave the cover off and get the USB cord set just right, it works. But sneeze, cough or fart and the USB cable disconnects from the UA600EX's USB port.

Other Thoughts: I ordered 2 of these, 1 from newegg and 1 from another site. The one that arrived from newegg was the OLD model (L156-039327-H01) and the amped wireless box had a white internal box, whereas the newer revised version (L156-039327-H02) that I received from another site had a black internal box.

I'm starting to lose faith in newegg. I've been a customer for 6+ years and have spent $1000's at newegg. After a few recent bad products and sub-par service that I have received from newegg, I'm starting to take my online purchases to other sites, which is sad because I used to love newegg and 98% of my online purchases were through them.

5 out of 5 eggsA Quick Follow-up

Pros: Since my last evaluation, I'd simply like to add that this unit continues its stellar performance. Presently, I am writing this follow-up using this unit and have turned off the internal, laptop wireless terminal as it cannot match the performance of this unit. My standard, laptop signal strength continues to show 5 bars in signal strength compared to the previous 1-2 bars experienced using the internal laptop terminal. I added a Windows 7 "Gadget" onto my desktop that provides more detailed information on signal strength and the meter shows signal strength that varies generally between 90% and 100% on this particular connection.
I love this unit! :)

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I wish to reiterate that this unit is highly directional and must be carefully pointed to maximize signal reception. Simple adjustment will generally produce at least 75% of total signal available. I am a perfectionist so it takes me an additional 60 seconds to "tweak" the direction the unit is pointing so I can get top performance. :P
I do not know of any additional suggestions that can be made to improve on this unit as I suspect that the amplifier could only produce a maximum of 1000mw by FCC regulation. The antenna might be designed to increase performance but the present design seems pretty darn good. I would be greatly surprised if Amped is able to produce a better performing unit than this one.

5 out of 5 eggsEvaluation

Pros: I just received this unit. It works great! Initial comparison shows that signal strength, across the board, is improved by at least three (3) bars on the signal icon. I have actually seen improvement from an original 0-1 bar to five bars on certain signals.

Cons: Non so far. Keep in mind that location, geography, distance and other physical variables will affect performance. Also, download the updated software! I'm using Windows 7 and there is specific driver updates you should download to maximize performance.

Other Thoughts: This unit combines three advantages to maximize signal (-db gain) reception. (1) Hi-gain antenna (2) Narrow, directional signal focus by the antenna (3) signal amplifier (600mw aka .6 watt).
This is the third, external signal adapter I've employed and is, by far, the most effective. Amped Wireless also sells another unit that has a full 1000mw/1 watt amplifier but the antenna is omni-directional as opposed to this unit. To me, the directional/hi gain antenna on this unit is more effective even though the amplifier is 600mw rather than 1000mw. HAM radio operators will understand that a hi-gain, directional antenna will give better performance advantage than an increase in amplifier power increase.
Bottom line - This is probably the best performer/unit presently on the market. All three of the important issues, as previously named above, are addressed with this unit.
