4 out of 5 eggsGreat so far

Pros: Range: I have an 8000 sqft house and I can now reach all corners of the house even on 5 GHz! It's so good, I haven't even tried 2.4 GHz, which previously (with my Asus RT-66U router) was the only band I could receive reliably and even that failed at the corners.

Cons: Setup GUI: The GUI tries to be simple for basic setup, and it is, but it ends up being confusing once you get past the first steps. That's because the basic setup requires a few reboots (automatic) and then once complete, the basic setup wizard is still the default selection on the GUI screen. So it looks like you haven't completed the basic setup, even though you have. You need to go to advanced settings to complete everything. It's not a problem for someone who understand wifi, but for the layman it might be the source for some problems.

Other Thoughts: The first thing I did after basic setup was to download the latest firmware. My unit (bought at a retail store) came with v1.0 firmware. I've read many reviews suggesting that the original firmware is buggy, so make sure you start the with latest and greatest firmware. I have no NOP problems with stability (reboots or dropping clients) with this AP.

1 out of 5 eggsDefective from the get go.

Pros: None

Cons: Out of the four purchased in January of this year only one has performed without failure and remains in service.

Within anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks the other three would knock previously associated clients off and not allow any new associations or even a login via hard wire to the Web interface. The only solution Amped support could offer was to factory reset and change some settings. Even after so doing the three units would again exhibit the same defect within the same time frame.

To say this was frustrating to me and my client would be a great understatement!

Other Thoughts: After facing the likely prospect of going through a swap for new units directly from the manufacturer I instead opted to contact Newegg directly and relate my trials with these units to them. I can't thank Newegg enough for stepping up to the plate and offering store credit for these units though strictly speaking they were not obligated to do so.
I have never been so thankful that I had kept all of the original documentation and packaging!!!

2 out of 5 eggsNot so great

Pros: easy setup. Tech support was knowledgeable.

Cons: First one I got was DOA. I got it and configured it and within minutes it was rebooting itself.

2nd one I got didn't live up to the 8,000 foot radius that it boasted. I got it, when I went to go set it up, it could find the website or ip address that the directions directed me to. They wouldn't work on any computer both connected wirelessly or wired. That was simple enough to get around, I found the IP address of what it was assigned through the router and configured the rest of the settings to what I wanted. I then tried it with my iphone and laptop in varying rooms around the house and it was no better than my wifi that originally came from my cisco router.

Other Thoughts: My next step is just to get access points put around the house for total coverage.

Manufacturer Response:

Anonymous,
We apologize if the APA20 unit did not perform to your expectations. In order to experience the advantage of using the APA20, your client devices need to support the 802.11AC standard. If they do not than you are reverting back to using 802.11 G or N which will give you results of less range and speed compared to the AC band. Please call our tech support line at 888-573-8820 so that a technician can assist you in getting the unit working properly.

4 out of 5 eggsAntennas are labeled wrong...

Pros: Great range, great speeds (once the antennas are installed properly)

Cons: Antennas (for mine at least) were mislabeled where 1 was actually 3 and 3 was 1

Other Thoughts: Was receiving terrible performance for the first month or 2 of owning the AP. on a whim, swapped the antennas and the the difference was night and day. connection speeds quadrupled, range increased and devices no longer disconnected randomly. Seems like a silly mistake on the part of the manufacturer. Perhaps better quality control....

1 out of 5 eggsGreat coverage but drops connections daily.

Pros: Coverage Area, Footprint, Styling

Cons: Drops WiFi connections, Frequently needs rebooted, Unreliable.

Other Thoughts: This is a very expensive access point at close to $200. One would expect top of the line performance for this price. The APA20 does not deliver.

I have flashed the firmware to the latest version downloaded from AmpedWireless.com several times. It made no difference whatsoever. You have to reboot this device on a daily basis in order to regain WiFi connections. In addition after flashing the firmware, I factory reset the unit to make sure all was clear before attempting to set up the unit again.

I have 4 devices using the APA20: 1) Samsung Galaxy Note 3, 2) LG G2, 3) iPad, 4) Sony Vaio Laptop. Every single device looses the connection with the APA20 on a daily basis. These same devices do stay connected with no issues to my TrendNet Access point. I bought the APA20 to replace the TrendNet in order to gain a greater coverage area. Looks like that was a bad idea. Stick with what works.

I used the 5 GHz band and monitored the device with a PC program called inSSIDer. With inSSIDer, you can see all devices in your neighborhood and make sure that yours is not on the same channel as neighboring devices. I had a unique 5 GHz channel so interference was not to blame. The APA20 just randomly drops connections. In fact there were no other 5 GHz channels in use in my area. Everyone else was using 2.4 GHz.

I went for help on the Amped Wireless Community Forums. I joined the forum and posted questions 3 times concerning my issues. Each time I posted, I received a message that the post had to be approved my a moderator. Well, they never were approved and posted to the forum. I got zero response. I suspect this is because there were so many other users complaining of the same issues, that Amped Wireless did not want to look bad by adding yet another complaint of dropped connections to the list. One would think that they would at least get back with a response, but they didn't.

The APA20 had the potential to be a great access point, but the firmware is not ready for prime time. Amped Wireless is letting the consumer be the beta tester for a product that was not ready for market. It's nice that they let us purchase these expensive units that don't reliably work, then possibly fix issues as time goes on at our time and expense.

I spent hours fiddling with this thing to try and get it to keep a reliable connection. I have wasted way to much time. It's going back as defective.

Manufacturer Response:

Chris,
We apologize for the trouble and inconvenience you have experienced with the APA20 unit. Rest assured that all of our products are tested before going to market and in no way do we expect the customers to be our Beta testers. Unfortunately with electronic components the possibility of failure is always there. Our products do have a one year replacement policy and we will gladly replace your unit. Regarding the forums, we apologize for the delay but the forum post are only moderated during Monday through Friday so any post done over the weekend are not approved and answered until Monday morning. If you need assistance having your unit replaced please call our tech support center at 888-573-8820 so that a technician can assist you in getting your unit replaced.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works well, better range than my previous access point.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: The ethernet ports weren't useful to me because I didn't see any way to get the unit to act as a simple network switch. It want to assign IP address to the devices you connect and act as a router. Not what I need.

2 out of 5 eggsBuggy device

Pros: Used it for almost two weeks. When it works, it gives good speeds and solid connection.

Cons: It randomly shuts down radios. I have to reboot atleast once a day to make it to work. Also, it happened already 4 times that eventhough you see full signal and solid connection, you cannot browse internet or ping the gateway.

Speed jumps a lot from 72mbps to 12mbps even when you are 20 feet away (N Band). AC band does not work well with my Galaxy Note 3 and my wife's S4. It randomly stops showing in available Wifi and it works for few hours after rebooting.

Other Thoughts: Let Amped wireless fix all the bugs before spending nearly 200$ on this device. More QA should have been done before release.

Manufacturer Response:

CDS,
We apologize for the trouble you are having with the APA20. The problems that you are describing indicate that there may be an issue with the units radio function that may be caused by a glitch in the firmware. This can be fixed by re-installing the firmware on the unit. Please call our tech support center at 888-573-8820 so that a technician can assist you in getting the unit working properly.
