5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding Product/outstanding support!!

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7416APn Wireless Range Extender / Access Point

Pros: Best wireless device I've used -AND- OUTSTANDING support!! While in an installation rush a messed up my settings during the install, so I contacted Edimax support. You cannot believe how knowledgeable, competent and professional their technician (Judy Chang) is. I’ve been building systems for a number of years, and occasionally have had to deal with manufacturers support teams; but, never, ever have I run across anyone as great as Ms. Chang. I would suggest that it’s almost worth buying an Edimax product and hope there is a problem so that you can experience what REAL support is!

Cons: ----

Other Thoughts: After this support experience, when I am in need of a item where Edimax has a product, I will buy the Edimax item - PERIOD!

4 out of 5 eggsGood product, but impossible to set up without help from support.

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7416APn Wireless Range Extender / Access Point

Pros: It works very well so far. It is small, too. Customer support is excellent and very kind.

Cons: It is true what others have said about the documentation, it is extremely poor. By that, I mean it's missing a lot of CRITICAL information. (it also has some engrish). Also, the setup software seems to be half-baked, as it doesn't even ask for certain critically needed settings. You actually have to go into the device's in-browser configuration to add these missing settings. One of these settings is the Security Key of the network that is going to be extended (!). Without it, you obviously can't connect to the source network, much less extend it. I had to add the Security Key manually through the in-browser config, during my call with tech support.

After spending an entire day trying to set this thing up, I was ready to RMA it. But at the last minute I decided to give Edimax tech support a try... boy am I glad I did that. The support lady was very very kind and helpful, and knew exactly what she was doing. A big kudos to her. Now it is working perfectly and I don't have to return it.

Given the state that the documentation and the setup software are in, I would never have been able to set this up on my own. And that's coming from a guy with 4+ years experience programming, with a college degree in CIS and a CompTia A+ certification.

Other Thoughts: If the manufacturer would only dramatically improve the documentation and the setup software, this could have easily been a 5 egg review. Meanwhile, don't expect to be able to set it up yourself without calling tech support, unless you're a wireless networking superpro or something. I think about, 5 different settings had to be changed manually through the device's in-browser config while I was with support. Thankfully support is excellent.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7416APn Wireless Range Extender / Access Point

Pros: Fast speeds, no hiccups; Flawless. Does what I needed it to and small enough to hard mod inside of an XBox when taken apart (just four screws). Also, it's described here as 12v DC but really it is 5v- so installation inside an original XBox is extremely simple.

Cons: Setup. I could not get the disc to load in multiple Windows 7 pcs so I had to go to their website and download a 139 mb file which wasn't a big deal, just a little irritating. I also assumed that the box being set at 192.168.2.1, I would have to set my device's Static IP to something involving 192.168.2.--- and my gateway to 192.168.2.1. However, it follows the original router configuration. Aside from the slight confusion there I'd say this is a great device.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7416APn Wireless Range Extender / Access Point

Pros: No packet loss. no errors , very smooth no lag while downloading or uploading as well streaming.

Cons: wpa2 (AES) doesnt work with the 360 so had the universal repeater to wpa
disc does not work in windows 8

Other Thoughts: how to set up without disc through webgui heres how
1. input into the ip4 properties while being connected to the edimax by lan for your ip 192.168.2.10
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.2.1 enter that hit ok
2 open up browser and type 192.168.2.1 there u go should tell you the login and pass in the box that pops up.
3. set it up for what you need
4. when your done open up the adapter and click ipv4 then properties and click the bubble to allow it to auto assign ip and dns blah blah blah pretty simple.
5. once it pulls u a ip from the original router if ur in repeater mode should be allowed to get to the internet

if you cant connect your xbox to it try this

1. go to your main router change the security to wpa2/wpa mixxed if your using a passphrase and not wep
2. go back to the computer connected to the edimax go to the adapter properties then click ipv4 properties type in what is above to access the web gui.
3.go into the security tab in the web gui and change wpa2 to wpa(TKIP). with the wpa preshared if your in repeater mode.
4. go back to the adapter properties and like above let it give u a ip and dns again.
5 check if u have internet now if u do then ur extender is now connected to the router again.
6. connect succeds on connecting to the extender then u will now see it trying to gain a ip for the internet.

Cheers mates hope this helps

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like advertised!!!

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7416APn Wireless Range Extender / Access Point

Pros: - Small footprint unit
- Simple setup (if you skip the CD and follow the guide documented on vendors website)
- Works as advertised!! This is the major point....why bother with a product if it doesn't work in the first place!
- Amplies signal to otherwise weaker Wifi spots out of bound by primary router
- Cost effective solution (major plus!!)
- One week since install and no reboots, 100% stable.

Cons: -Supplied CD and documentation is vague..if anything, these will only lead to frustration
- No physical power button to turn on/off (some see this as a con but it doesn't bother me....I've been working with electronics for 15 yrs and I always disconnect the power source directly)

Other Thoughts: This is the 2nd Wifi Extender that I purchased to solve my Wifi issues in my 2 story 3500 sq feet house. The first was a more expensive Linksys AP which worked but would lock up my primary router under heavy load (Netflix streaming, UTube and console gaming). Worked with their tech support and they never really resolved issue. I returned that one back to A'zon.

Was a little hesitant with this product simply cos it sounded too cheap :-). But I ordered it. Once configured, it worked excellent. In the lower rooms where I had the most reception issues, my devices are getting connected at 150MB (N network). My kids stream lots of shows via Netflix/Hulu and the connection stays robust.

So basically, my primary Buffalo Air Station is on the 2nd floor and the EdiMax is on the ground floor which extends the network to the lower level (all over).

It's been a week now and I haven't rebooted the EdiMax nor my Buffalo. 100% stability so far.

Other thoughts:
- DONT use the CD. Print out the manual from Edimax's website and follow it to the teeth. Setup shouldn't take more than 15 mins of your time
- Note this comes with a pre-assigned IP address so you have to manually change the IP on your laptop/desktop to connect to it the first time to configure it. Once configured, change the IP on the EdiMax to something to reflect your WiFi network subnet.

4 out of 5 eggssimple to set up ....

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7416APn Wireless Range Extender / Access Point

Pros: Dead Simple to set up. Read the quick start guide, let my router give the box and IP, and entered the WAP code ...

Cons: Took two tries to realize that I had to let my system assign the IP, and had to disconnect another wifi repeater that I had in another part of the house.

5 out of 5 eggsAwsome

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7416APn Wireless Range Extender / Access Point

Pros: Works great and does what it says.

Cons: Wasn't free... but hey everyone has to make money.

Other Thoughts: After reading the other reviews I saw how EDIMAX responded to help. Guys, before complaining try changing your chanels and get rid of the interference.
I am now a huge fan of EDIMAX, good on you mates.
