4 out of 5 eggsRaspberry Pi Compatible

Pros: I bought this strictly for my Raspberry Pi, and it worked right out of the package. After the initial software update for RaspBMC, the adapter worked exactly as expected. Successfully streamed HD video through local wireless N network.

Cons: It's not as fast as I'd like, but it's cheap; what do you expect?

Other Thoughts: The initial XBMC install for the Pi required a LAN connection. Once you install the software on the SD card, you hook up the Pi, and it downloads the latest RaspBMC and installs all the necessary drivers, etc. Once XBMC was running, I was able to unplug the LAN cable, restarted, and wireless took over.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well on Crunchbang Linux and Win7

Pros: I used this on my Samsung N150 netbook to replace the internal mini-pcie wifi card which I removed to gain space for a Crystal HD video card. I run Crunchbang Linux on the netbook and this wifi dongle always performed flawlessly. It is so small u hardly notice it is there. And since it is so small you can just leave it plugged into a laptop etc. without worry of breaking it off like you might with a longer device. Eventually I added another mpcie socket to the netbooks motherboard which allowed me to reinstall the internal wifi card. So now the Edimax is plugged into my desktop which is a win7 machine. I use it to connect to my wireless printer. It was plug and play and is working perfectly. I am planning some mods to my old Dell 1525 laptop where I will also have to remove the wifi card. I will definitely be buying another one of these. I don't think the price and performance of this wifi dongle can be beat. And it is small enough that I should be able to mount it internally and hardwire it to the mobo.

Cons: None

2 out of 5 eggsWorks with Linux but poorly.

Pros: Works out of the box with Linux, drivers are included with the Linux kernel.

Cons: Limited range. Signals that normally should produce 100% signal strength only produce about 60% with this adapter. Very bad antenna design.

Other Thoughts: The limited range issue was bad enough to make the adapter non usable for my application, so I threw it in the trash. Not worth the trouble of returning.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We are sorry for the difficulty you are experiencing with Linux.

We are not sure the version of your Linux kernel. Some Linux have built-in driver for our wireless adapter but the performance is not well. Therefore, it is better to download the RTL8192CU Linux driver from Realtek web site and compile the driver for your Linux.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: It glowed while it was working.

Cons: Broke after a few hours of use, and I use the word "work" lightly. I do not recommend for Linux users, unless you know what you're doing. After accomplishing necessary tasks to get it to work it was lousy, kept losing connection before finally it went kuput. Long Ethernet cords are a better value.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We are sorry for the difficulty you are experiencing with Linux.

Some Linux have built-in driver for our wireless adapter. However, the built-in driver does not work well. You may run the lsmod (lower case of LSMOD) command to verify the driver modules loaded in your Linux. If needed, you may blacklist those pre-installed driver and so the correct driver could work properly.

We have 2 years warranty for our products. You can visit our USA site at http://us.edimax.com Tech Support and fill out the RMA Request Form. Our RMA staff will assist you.

5 out of 5 eggsJust Fabulous

Pros: I have installed quite a few of these around town and have had no issues to my knowledge with any of them

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have not tested throughput vs range so I do not know how well they perform distance-wise.

1 out of 5 eggsInsufficient Range

Pros: Small, Convenient

Cons: Insufficient range, poor signal

Other Thoughts: Save yourself some time and get a PCI

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We are sorry for the difficulty you are experiencing.

If your desktop computer has a USB port on the front, please put the nano wireless adapter on the front instead of on the back of your computer.

The antenna in the nano wireless adapter is quite tiny. If your desktop computer is located 30 feet from your Wi-Fi router, though it shows good signal strength, we recommend you use an USB extension stand or an USB extension cord plugged into the USB port of your computer. Making the nano wireless adapter stand up vertically rather than stay horizontally inside the USB port of your computer. This will help EW-7811Un have better reception and much faster throughput.

If you need any technical assistance, please feel free to contact our tech support at (408)988-6092 or write an email to " support@edimax.us " directly.

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable, constantly loses signal!

Pros: Price and size

Cons: I have tried this adapter in several different laptops all with the same results....it constantly cuts in and out and will drive you absolutely insane. It's possible I received a bad one...I suppose.

Other Thoughts: I ended up with 2 of these because of newegg's ordering system, They would take it back but I had to pay to ship it back, doesn't make sense on a $9 item. Blows!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We are sorry for the difficulty you are experiencing.

We need more information to investigate this issue. What is the brand of your wireless router? Do you know the wireless channel of your network? Usually we use channel 1, 6, or 11. They are the only three channels which does not overlap with each other. You may try switch the wireless channel of your network in case your neighbors are using same channel with you.

Please feel free to contact our tech support at (408)988-6092 or write an email to " support@edimax.us " directly.
