5 out of 5 eggsGreat upgrade for an old laptop.

Pros: Very easy to set up in Windows 7 and has been working well for over eight months. Easy replacement for a failed 802.11G unit in a 2007 laptop.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This has a blue LED built in which blinks with wireless network activity.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well on my Raspberry PI 2 b

Pros: Good solid connection using LINUX MATE

Cons: I got this because it was advertised as compatible with the Raspberry PI. While this is true there is no documentation on how to install drivers etc. I was able to get it to work using the native LINUX MATE configuration.

Only 4 eggs for lack of documentation.

Other Thoughts: This appears to be a good low price solution to WiFi for the RP 2. (I now see the RP 3 is out with WiFi built in.) I would buy this again and recommend it to others.

2 out of 5 eggsworks to a degree

Pros: got me a wireless internet connection

Cons: says it supports up to 150 Mbps i was only able to get on average .70 Mbps with a 10 Mbps internet connection from my ISP and that's only with one wall between me and the router with me 20 ft from it. It also would stop working from time to time.

Other Thoughts: no man should be forced to watch youtube in 360p

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Thomas,

You may want to try a different channel on your router between 1-11. You may also want to try setting the channel frequency to be 40 MHz. In addition, maximum performance, actual data rates, and coverage will vary depending on network conditions and environmental factors.

3 out of 5 eggssmall adapter small signal

Pros: It is a very small adapter that can fit almost anywhere without making an infringement on space. The install was very easy and the edimax software interface works well. It also functions with my Ubuntu setup.

Cons: The signal reception for this adapter is quite low. If you are in the same room as your wireless router or not too far away it is great, but if you go through too many walls, across too large a distance, etc... the signal drops pretty low. I am on a campus with an extensive wireless net right now and it only pulls in a signal strength of about 46 - 50% which is passable and but not good. My internal 802.11b/g wireless adapter on my laptop has better reception.

Other Thoughts: For home use in the same room this is great, but if you want to take it mobile or across the house get something with better reception.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for supporting Edimax.

Since the EW-7811Un is a Nano USB adapter, the antenna's coverage will decrease if there is a lot of interference.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy to install

Pros: I love these things! You need no extra drivers in Linux, including Raspbian. I bought three so I could have one to carry around just in case of emergencies and one extra.

Cons: Not sure about range. I haven't really tested it, but I suspect it won't go the range of a PCI card. Of course, that isn't why I bought them.

Other Thoughts: Well, they are small and easy to lose. I had this same type before I moved, and who knows where it went?

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well but needed to compile an updated firmware for Linux

Pros: Price

Cons: Tried this with both Linux Mint and Xubuntu and had problems where it would show as being connected to the network but all activity stopped. Would have to reconnect to wifi to get working again. Had to find an updated firmware on GitHub and compile it and blacklist the bad firmware to get it working right.

5 out of 5 eggsFixed my Windows 10 loss of wireless network adapter!

Pros: After updating my Dell Inspiron laptop to Windows 10, it had lost the Intel wireless. After much frustration, downloads and reinstalls, I bought this nano adapter. It is great!!!!!!! Very fast, hasn't dropped at all.

Cons: None really, uses up a usb port but my computer has four.

Other Thoughts: You must install drivers from the included disc. They DO work on Windows 10. When you plug the device into the computer, Windows tries to install its own drivers. I had let it and they didnt work. USE THE DRIVER ON THE DISC!!! They work great

1 out of 5 eggsgarbage

Pros: It worked for a few hours

Cons: I regret owning this. I have Ubuntu 14.04. I got it last night. I ended up spending 2 hours trying to figure out using Ubuntu terminals and setting this up. It's been 8 hours, and it failed. It simply stopped working. It can connect to wifi. I put in the correct wifi password, it blinks for a few seconds, then it turns off. Nothing should be this complicated for an $8 dollar wifi adaptor.

Other Thoughts: DO NOT BUY
