5 out of 5 eggsnice little unit

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7228APn Wireless Range Extender / Access Point

Pros: This extender works as advertised with little effort. The range is not stellar but adequate for most users. The price was commensurate with the revealed performance.

Cons: Using mixed b and g causes the n band to decrease in performance across the board. Difficult to access the settings of this repeater once the setup is complete.

Other Thoughts: All in all, for the price, you would be hard pressed to find a better repeater

1 out of 5 eggsSo slow

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7228APn Wireless Range Extender / Access Point

Pros: I didn't lose much money

Cons: Incredibly slow, the install disc was useless

Other Thoughts: I was trying to boost my wifi signal on the opposite end of the house. I was only getting 3 bars and I play games on this connection. I used speedtest.net and with my 3 bars I was getting rated at 4mbps but I never had a download that fast and games were slightly choppy. First of all setting this thing up was a bit of a pain. Every time I put in the password 1234 it said it was wrong even after a factory reset. It also didn't have an 8 digit pin printed on it anywhere. I thought the reviews with people having connection issues were the type that "know how to open internet explorer" as a highlight of tech expertise. Unfortunately not. So eventually I get it to work, set it to repeater mode and I have 5 bars. I try speedtest.net and it rates me at .6mbps (thats POINT six not 6). I couldn't even load facebook. I try it in ap mode because I just so happen to have made a 75' ethernet cable to the other side of the house. It got rated at .8mbps. I then just use it as a hardwired router bypassing the wifi, just to see, and it got rated at 1.2mbps. I got rated at 6mbps without the device.

tl;dr: The other people 1 staring it because of set up issues aren't just a bunch of non-techies. It choked my connection speed even used as just a hardwired router to a SIXTH of my regular speed. Don't buy it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

We are sorry for the issue you are experiencing.

The extender setup utility through the Ethernet adapter may not accept the password 1234 while the computer wirelessly connects to an existing Wi-Fi network. We have a step by step instruction on Edimax USA site about how to temporarily disable Wi-Fi adapter of the computer.

The range extender is primary used to extend wireless range. Unfortunately, the connection speed would be reduced because the extender receives the packets and rebroadcasts the same packets which make the network traffic doubled and the available bandwidth reduced.

In case there is interference from other wireless network, you may try using different Wi-Fi channel like channel 1, 6, 11. That may give you better performance.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as described

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7228APn Wireless Range Extender / Access Point

Pros: Worked out of box
Very helpful customer service
Allow me to hook up wired network printer and extended my wireless network

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I recently moved into a 3 bedroom house with my router hooked up on the first floor and trapped behind my TV in a corner. This was necessary because of the cable modem hook-up. At any rate, my office on the second floor received decent signal, but I had no way to hook up my network printer that required an ethernet connection. In addition, I received unusuably poor network signal on the 3rd floor. After calling tech support prior to my purchase, I was informed this device would allow me to plug in my wired network printer and extended my network to the 3rd floor, either with a separate SSID or in a seemless network. When my package arrived, I called tech support at the number listed on multiple reviews. In less than 30 minutes Derrick talked me through the set up process and I had great internet coverage on my 3rd floor and my printer working again. I highly recommend, if for nothing else, the wonderful customer service.

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7228APn Wireless Range Extender / Access Point

Pros: Works well

Cons: Not for the faint of heart

Other Thoughts: Forgot to mention, I mounted it to a wall and put a 9" square piece of foil behind the antenna, and I have full bars on my wireless devices.

4 out of 5 eggsGo Ahead, make my day

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7228APn Wireless Range Extender / Access Point

Pros: Range is about a B.
Speed gets an A
Web interface (for me) an A
Hey! Works as a switch/hub at the far end of a Powerline!
Mounting screws (put it in an inconspicuous place).
Latest firmware already on board.

Cons: If you are a self declared expert, but still need cd's to install and configure network hardware, please downgrade your expert status. That said, if you are hoping for a Linksys type experience during setup, you may have issues. If you can configure a router without being attached to a network (some will know what I mean) then you are good to go. I would not hook this to any network during configuration, personally. It will see your network after configuration, just fine.

Other Thoughts: I don't see why one would use this as a repeater. Too cheap, and the signal won't necessarily improve range with good signal quality. My suggestion would be spend about $40 or $50 bucks on a powerline, and stick this thing at the end of it as an AP/switch. I think the bad reviews have to do with lack of network knowledge, and poor network planning. This thing is fine. Mac users can go to a friends house who has a PC, use the software to configure it, apart from the network (if you need to use setup software to configure it), bring it home and plug it in. It will do the rest. I am speaking for AP/switch functioning. I'd pass on using it as a repeater (range extender).

3 out of 5 eggsIt works, sort of...

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7228APn Wireless Range Extender / Access Point

Pros: Cheap, it does work as a wifi repeater.

Cons: very un-intuitive! Software follows no logic. I have it working on a protected network as a wifi repeater but really can't say exactly how it started working.
I've setup several repeaters for clients using various different brands. This is the most difficult to setup.

Also requires frequent power cycling (once a week), and sometimes to connect a new device.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

We are sorry for the difficulty you are experiencing.

We have a setup guide on our USA site at http://us.edimax.com

Here is the direct link so that you can use the Setup Wizard in CD disc to perform the setup.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7228APn Wireless Range Extender / Access Point

Pros: easy to setup, good throughput, good range, small and light, decent documentation (downloaded)

Cons: five port switch is only 100 Mbit; no power on/off switch;

Other Thoughts: covers three floors of the house no problem using the lowest transmit power setting; I didn't try their software; the default IP address and login is printed on the back of the device making setup easy

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7228APn Wireless Range Extender / Access Point

Pros: Um... It worked at first... sort of.

Cons: Included software doesn't work

Web gateway is unusable

Basically its impossible to use the hardware, because of the software

Other Thoughts: I set it up whenever i first got it and used it for ~6 months. It was a pain but at the time the cheapest one I found. My trouble came when I tried to reconfigure it later.

The software included to set it up is a joke. Horrendous- it does not discover access point when it is connected, so you have to configure via the web gateway. Not bad, right? That is what I usually do. However, the web gateway is just as unusable as the included software.

Save yourself the pain and do not buy this ap.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We are sorry that our user manual could not help you install our AP to work.
We appreciate your feedback and would like to help you solve the problem.

4 out of 5 eggsHard to beat for $23.00

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7228APn Wireless Range Extender / Access Point

Pros: 1. Gives me 5 bars in a room that used to be 2 bars.
2. Set up with Win 7 was straightforward after downloading instructions from Edimax.
3. Response time from Edimax to a question was very quick.
4. Has been stable with no resets for the first 3 days.

Cons: 1. Transmission power seems to not be very strong.
2. English used in manual and downloaded instructions can be very difficult to decipher.

Other Thoughts: When I put this receiver in the room where I have problems, it picks up my router signal well and rebroadcasts it well enough to give me a strong signal. Its broadcast range seems rather limited though.

There is a firmware upgrade, which I have not tried yet.
