5 out of 5 eggsReally good adapter

This review is from: Edimax EW-7822UAC Wireless AC1200 Dual-band USB 3.0 Adapter, Complies to Draft 802.11ac Standard, Delivers More Than Two Times Faster Wi-Fi Speed Than 802.11n, With Adjustable Foldaway Antenna for Optimum High Performance

Pros: Great range, good speed, reliable connection.

Cons: Not worth taking off an egg for this but just a general FYI:

If you are using Windows 8.1 DO NOT use the windows drivers for this thing. As tempting as it may be to just plug it in, the windows drivers will slow the speed of this thing to a crawl after a while. You WILL NOT be happy with it, I promise.

Other Thoughts: I figured I would try this for a build I'm doing involving a makeshift Plex/TeamSpeak server running off WiFi.

Surprisingly pings are insanely low for everyone using my TS server... ...even while i'm streaming HD content to every TV in my house!

Plex content also buffers on all my Roku devices near instantly regardless of the media size and stream quality.

5 out of 5 eggsNo more Lag

This review is from: Edimax EW-7822UAC Wireless AC1200 Dual-band USB 3.0 Adapter, Complies to Draft 802.11ac Standard, Delivers More Than Two Times Faster Wi-Fi Speed Than 802.11n, With Adjustable Foldaway Antenna for Optimum High Performance

Pros: Great strong connection, and decent throughput.
Put this on my gaming desktop that I take around with me and never had an issue dropping connection or a bad connection.

Using windows 7 home 32-bit on i5-4670 and MSI board.

Cons: Drivers were hard to find online initially.

Other Thoughts: Haven't used at the higher frequency yet.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat true dual band 2.4& 5 gig , not just all 2.4

This review is from: Edimax EW-7822UAC Wireless AC1200 Dual-band USB 3.0 Adapter, Complies to Draft 802.11ac Standard, Delivers More Than Two Times Faster Wi-Fi Speed Than 802.11n, With Adjustable Foldaway Antenna for Optimum High Performance

Pros: very easy setup, really fast, no interference from neighbors

Cons: Antenna is somewhat goofy as it really allows only one way to orientate. Standard rubber ducky would work much better.

Other Thoughts: about to buy another as soon as I get a usb 3 adapter card for my older pc.

1 out of 5 eggsCannot get N speed, let alone AC speed

This review is from: Edimax EW-7822UAC Wireless AC1200 Dual-band USB 3.0 Adapter, Complies to Draft 802.11ac Standard, Delivers More Than Two Times Faster Wi-Fi Speed Than 802.11n, With Adjustable Foldaway Antenna for Optimum High Performance

Pros: None really

Cons: The antenna is flimsy, and only swivels on a single axis. I have a Cisco 802.11AC router that is about 20' away from the adapter, and the adapter, even though it was showing 5 bars would only connect at 86Mbps on the 5 GHZ band, and 150Mbps on the 2.4 GHZ band. And can only maintain about 8-10 Mbps throughput.
A similar 802.11N adapter connects at 270 or 300 Mbps consistently.

3 out of 5 eggsSo so

This review is from: Edimax EW-7822UAC Wireless AC1200 Dual-band USB 3.0 Adapter, Complies to Draft 802.11ac Standard, Delivers More Than Two Times Faster Wi-Fi Speed Than 802.11n, With Adjustable Foldaway Antenna for Optimum High Performance

Pros: Great speeds when it works

Cons: Disconnects often and randomly. My router (R7000 Nighthawk) is only a few feet away on the other side of a wall from where my computer is.

Other Thoughts: If I can manage to get this thing to maintain a reliable connection it would be great. May have to look into a different adapter for this computer as the 7260hmw I put in my other laptop works great.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We are sorry for the dropping connection issue.

What is the operating system of your computer? Is it a Windows 8 or Windows 7?

Do you have connection issue if connect to 2.4Ghz network?

5 out of 5 eggsBest value. Very pleased.

Pros: 33MB/s sustained data transfers.
USB 3.0
5GHz AC for a great value.

Cons: Adapter is big enough to occupy two adjacent USB ports on a motherboard. Recommend extension cable for this application.

Other Thoughts: I have been trying to get buffer-free local network HD media streaming to my HTPC from a couple of wired gigabit Windows SMB shares for a few months. I’m using XBMC as the front end for my HTPC. The HTPC is located about 35 feet away through one interior wall. It is tucked behind my HDTV in a mass of wires that are surely an interference nightmare. I live in the middle of a housing development with many neighbors. I didn’t realize that this was such a problem until only a couple of weeks ago.

InSSIDer tells me there are 13 neighbors close enough to interfere with the 2.4GHz band. My Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 router is intelligent enough to determine the best mode to use based on the environment. You can force it to use dual channel mode and actually get a higher connection speed, but the throughput suffers dramatically due to excessive interference. My speeds dropped from the initial 6MB/s to 3.5MB/s when I forced the router to use dual channels using my previous TP-Link TL-WN822N adapter. The problem was clear, too much interference on the 2.4GHz band.

Currently, there really aren’t many choices available for USB 3.0 AC1200 adapters. Those that are available are all over $50 and are riddled with mixed reviews. I almost purchased the Edimax EW-7811UTC. It is advertised as AC600 though Edimax clearly states that the actual theoretical throughput is only 433Mbps. Also, it is a USB2.0 adapter. That 433Mbps is the theoretical limit of USB2.0. Why go through all of the trouble to create a high speed wireless network only to be bottlenecked by the USB 2.0 architecture?

That brings me to this Edimax EW-7822UAC. I also purchased a 3 meter USB 3.0 extension cable and I’m glad I did. The adapter is big enough that it would have covered both of my USB 3.0 ports on my HTPC. By using the extension cable, I can get the adapter out from behind the interference-ridden TV and into the open. Installed the latest drivers directly from Edimax website before plugging it in. Everything worked perfect on that front. 33MB/sec sustained data rates! WOW! SIX times faster than anything I could achieve with the best 2.4GHz devices! Absolutely no buffers or skips in XBMC when streaming 16GB 1080p videos over the network. I AM PLEASED!

The Edimax EW-7822UAC adapter is the absolute best value for connecting your devices to the 5GHz 802.11AC standard.

5 out of 5 eggsBlazing fast connections

This review is from: Edimax EW-7822UAC Wireless AC1200 Dual-band USB 3.0 Adapter, Complies to Draft 802.11ac Standard, Delivers More Than Two Times Faster Wi-Fi Speed Than 802.11n, With Adjustable Foldaway Antenna for Optimum High Performance

Pros: Set up was painless , once hooked up connected right away . Super fast , transfer rates are great , no stuttering watching blu ray mvies . Both 2.4 and 5.0 bands have stable connections . So far no problems with the USB 3.0 connection , using hoo too pcie card .

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Was worried because of all the reviews with problems , so far none here , might have to do with the USB 3.0 drivers , some USB 3.0 drivers don't work well .

3 out of 5 eggsNot good over distances

This review is from: Edimax EW-7822UAC Wireless AC1200 Dual-band USB 3.0 Adapter, Complies to Draft 802.11ac Standard, Delivers More Than Two Times Faster Wi-Fi Speed Than 802.11n, With Adjustable Foldaway Antenna for Optimum High Performance

Pros: - Connected at a *slightly* faster speed to 5GHz, as compared to my Belkin and Buffalo 802.11n USB 2.0 adapters

Cons: - Blocked other ports
- Could never reach more than 130Mbps connectivity speed despite 3-bars of signal "strength", while pairing with an Edimax 802.11ac WiFi router
- Flip out antenna doesn't swivel
- Zero documentation for most of the WiFi adapter settings that are available
- Ended up using MoCA to solve my network topology issues

Other Thoughts: Overall, I was disappointed in this adapter. I've tried a couple of 802.11n adapters (Belkin and Buffalo) on my HTPC to reach my WiFi router (also Edimax), but connectivity speed was typically ~60Mbps. Upgrading to the 802.11ac adapter did get me a slight bump in speeds (~90Mbps avg), but it was quite variable and very position sensitive (partly due to large distances between the HTPC and router).

I also have an XBox acting as a Media Center Extender, over 802.11n, and had been trying to get enough bandwidth between the HTPC and router, and then the router to XBox. Putting these on different WiFi technologies played havoc with the Network Evaluator feature of Media Center, and streaming of Media Center content to the XBox didn't improve beyond SD (despite the upgrade from 802.11n to 802.11ac on the HTPC).

In the end, I got a pair of Motorola MoCA (Multimedia over Cable) adapters and used those to run "ethernet" over coax between my HTPC and router. This resulted in my HTPC seeing 100Mbps *solid*, AND providing rock-solid streaming throughput of HD content between the HTPC and XBox!

Considering I have a matched Edimax router, and matched Edimax USB 3.0 wifi adapter, I'd been hoping for a more seamless and high-performance experience. In the end, even with the XBox on 802.11n, getting the HTPC+router wired over MoCA was my savior.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks good with Linux

This review is from: Edimax EW-7822UAC Wireless AC1200 Dual-band USB 3.0 Adapter, Complies to Draft 802.11ac Standard, Delivers More Than Two Times Faster Wi-Fi Speed Than 802.11n, With Adjustable Foldaway Antenna for Optimum High Performance

Pros: - Linux Support (the reason I bought it)
- Good speeds and signal strength unlike my old broadcom card
- Super simple to install (besides what I say in other thoughts)

Cons: - It doesn't come in other colors
- Edimax doesn't have a driver on there site that works with the latest kernel, you need to download it from github or fix it yourself.

Other Thoughts: I bought this product specifically because it worked with Linux. I initially went to the Edimax website to download the driver, but I couldn't get it to install. After looking through the newegg reviews, someone hinted that the card has a rtl8812AU chip. After a quick search on github, I found a version modified to work with the Linux kernel 3.10 and up.

Working great on openSUSE, using kernel 3.11 :)
