4 out of 5 eggsSet it and forget about it

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router / Extender / AP 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides Simultaneous 2.4GHz & 5GHz with Gigabit Ports for Faster Connectivity, Features iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: Very stable

Cons: Firmware gets the job done, but few extra features
No DD-WRT support

Other Thoughts: I have used this router for almost a year. Never have I needed to reboot this router or seen any abnormal connection issues. While the firmware is very stable, the feature set is somewhat limited. For example, I can see the MAC and IP addresses in the DHCP table, but no device names. And I can't manually add device names either. The range of the router is not bad, But I wonder if it could be improved by using 6dB antenna instead of the 3dB ones that come with it.

1 out of 5 eggsNetwork Drops

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router / Extender / AP 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides Simultaneous 2.4GHz & 5GHz with Gigabit Ports for Faster Connectivity, Features iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: Very fast WIFI speeds. I used two with one as an extender to have fast speeds for my media server, game consoles, and TV that aren't near my modem or primary router (also a BR-6478AC now). Setup was extremely simple.

Cons: Connection gets interrupted intermittently. Every 2-20 minutes, all traffic is lost and current connections are broken. This typically isn't an issue for normal browsing, but for gaming or things like Hangouts or Skype, you'll lose your connection every time this happens.

Devices have the latest firmware as of the time of this review (2.12).

Other Thoughts: This is happening to my computer (hard wired) and my tablet (wifi). I was in the same Hangouts (using my computer to show my screen and tablet for video and both would get disconnected at the same time. The other participants weren't having any issues so it wasn't the server.

My routers were very old so I bought two of these, one for my primary router, and the other to be a range extender. I've tried both units as my primary router and the problem is exactly the same. The speeds are really good when it's working, but the constant disconnects make it unusable for any application that requires a constant connection.

I'd give this device 5 eggs if they could fix this issue.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic wireless router with easy installation

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router / Extender / AP 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides Simultaneous 2.4GHz & 5GHz with Gigabit Ports for Faster Connectivity, Features iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: - Very easy installation and set up
- Stylish looking
- Acts as a router, access point or range extender
- No issues with restarting
- Great internet speeds

Cons: - Antennas do not come off

Other Thoughts: I have had the Edimax Dual-Band AC1200 Router for about a week now and so far everything has gone extremely smoothly without any problems.

After unboxing, you will find the router, power cord, a CD to help with installation (but not required), an Ethernet cable, and rubber feet to attach to the bottom of the router, a couple screws if you want to wall mount it, and an installation guide.

The really nice this about this router is that not only will it replace (and upgrade) your old router, but it also can act as an access point and a range extender. It is very easy to flip between all the modes when needed.

The design of the router is very stylish. It has your normal ports – 4-1 Gb ethernet ports and one WAN port on the back. On the back it also has a radio on/off button and a WPS button. LED lights on the front are power, internet, 2.4GHz wireless, 5GHz wireless, WAN, and Lan 1-4. Basically everything you usually find in a router.

The one thing that sets this router apart from all other ones that I have used is the fact that once you plug everything in and find the “edimax.setup” SSID, when you open up your internet browser, you are immediately directed to the Edimax “get started” screen. This is different because usually I would have to plug in some IP address and it was a confusing mess. This eliminated all that hassle! Once connected, it will take you on a step by step journey to ensure that you are correctly connecting everything. I’m not a technology genius by any means and I was able to connect so that definitely says something about how easy it was!

This also gives a pretty good wireless signal. I live in an apartment complex and was more than 150 feet away from the router itself and was able to connect to my wifi without any problem. I had been renting out my router previously and this one blows that one out of the water! In the week that I’ve tested this, I have not once had to restart it, which I did have to do at least once every few days with my other router.

This is a fantastic router, one which I would recommend to anyone who is in the market for one. Not only does it look nice, but it also does its job very well. I also like the fact that it has the access point and range extender which are added bonuses. Therefore, I give this router a 5 star rating!

I was given this item as a sample in exchange for my fair and honest evaluation. In no way was I forced to give a positive review of this product and I stand by everything written in this review. If you have any questions about this product feel free to ask me and I would be more than happy to help out.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router for 9 months so far!

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router / Extender / AP 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides Simultaneous 2.4GHz & 5GHz with Gigabit Ports for Faster Connectivity, Features iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: 802.11ac speed, gigabit Ethernet connection, very stable wi-fi conneciton

Cons: the product is "hot"

Other Thoughts: I've had this wireless router for about 9 months. It was easy to hook up to modem and hasn't had any problems so far. Its very reliable. its very easy to connect to configuration page. Simply connect the wifi or ethernet connection to a pc or laptop, and then type in http://edimax.setup in your browser url bar, the default username is admin and password is 1234. I never heard about this company before but they did a solid job!

3 out of 5 eggsDynamic IP Disconnect

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router / Extender / AP 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides Simultaneous 2.4GHz & 5GHz with Gigabit Ports for Faster Connectivity, Features iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: Relatively inexpensive

Cons: With the latest 2.12 firmware the Dynamic IP Disconnects have been reduced to approximately one every three days, but they are still occurring. Unfortunately I've had throw my ASUS RT-N16 (radio went bad) to act as a frontend.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

We are sorry about the disconnect issue you are experiencing with our router.

This could be a incompatibility issue with the modem. Do you use a cable modem?

We will need to know the brand of the cable modem.

If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact our tech support at (408)988-6092 or write an email to " support@edimax.us " directly.

3 out of 5 eggsRun of the mill with some issues.

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router / Extender / AP 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides Simultaneous 2.4GHz & 5GHz with Gigabit Ports for Faster Connectivity, Features iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: First off, Edimax is releasing fixes so they are definitely trying to address all the issues.

Cons: Some drops with v2.02 firmware. Range not as good as 2.4 GHz TEW-637AP (in use for years) it replaced (using same channel). I also tried a TP-LINK Archer C7 v2 AC1750 in the same location, and it had much greater range. The TP-LINK was destined to a vacation home with more challenging WiFi issues.

Other Thoughts: I hope there is no fundamental hardware issue like the
TP-LINK Archer C7 v1 AC1750. The Edimax was released out the door early it seems. The TEW-637AP it replaced had issues for a long time until they were all fixed, but eventually became rock solid.

The unit works well about 99% of the time with v2.02 firmware. Now trying v2.12 and hope range will be at least as good as what it replaced. The 5 GHz range is not great, but my home area is full of 5GHz devices.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Happy

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router / Extender / AP 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides Simultaneous 2.4GHz & 5GHz with Gigabit Ports for Faster Connectivity, Features iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: Easy to set up. Easy to deploy, Good range.

Cons: I was using these as media bridges connected to a Linksys router. I had data drops out for a few seconds every 10 minutes or so (just enough to cause WoW to disconnect me). I replaced these with my old media bridges and have not had an issue since. I would return them but I have had them too long to get a refund.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

We are sorry about the wireless bridge mode of BR-6478AC does not work well for you.

Is your Linksys router a dual band router which support both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz? Can you please make BR-6428AC as 2.4Ghz wireless bridge only and see if the WOW or other online game connections could perform better?

If you need any further assistance, please feel free to contact our tech support at (408)988-6092 or write an email to " support@edimax.us " directly.

3 out of 5 eggsProblems with managment

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router / Extender / AP 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides Simultaneous 2.4GHz & 5GHz with Gigabit Ports for Faster Connectivity, Features iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: It will pass traffic

Cons: After about a day it will no longer respond to administration attempts through HTTPS or HTTP. Have to unplug and plug back in for it to respond.

Other Thoughts: It does not seem to stop passing traffic through the router when this happens so it does still work, but can not manage it, and make settings changes.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

We are sorry about the web page of BR-6478AC stopped responding.

Can you please verify the firmware version v2.12? Do you use it as a regular wireless router or extender mode?

We need more information in order to provide suggestions. Please feel free to contact our tech support at (408)988-6092 or write an email to " support@edimax.us " directly.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't pull IP from Charter Cable Surfboard Modem

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router / Extender / AP 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides Simultaneous 2.4GHz & 5GHz with Gigabit Ports for Faster Connectivity, Features iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: Economically priced dual band AC router

Cons: Won't pull IP from Charter Cable Surfboard modem.

Other Thoughts: I spent three hours unplugging and plugging in the cable modem trying to get this router to pull an IP without any luck. I've owned 3 other routers and none of them have had to be bound by MAC addresses to work. I tried both with and without cloning the MAC address, the BR-6748AC refuses to work for me. Judging by similar complaints, it appears this is hit or miss. I cannot recommend this product to anyone.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We are sorry for the difficulty you are experiencing. We appreciate your feedback and would like to help you solve the problem.

You may try the following.
1. Power off the Cable Modem. Power off the Edimax router. Connect the Ethernet cable from Cable Modem to WAN port of Edimax router.
2. Power on the cable modem. Wait for 1 minute. Power on Edimax router. Wait for 1 minute.
3. Login to http://edimax.setup or http://192.168.2.1 to verify the Internet Connection IP address.

If you need any further assistance, please feel free to contact our tech support at (408)988-6092 or write an email to " support@edimax.us " directly.
