4 out of 5 eggs5GHz Range is very small

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router/Extender/AP, 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: - Gigabit
- No reboots. Running strong since day 1.
- 2.4 GHz range is almost as good as my old N router was. See cons.
- Gigabit ports work at full speed, no issues.
- Handles routing better than the cable company's modem.
- Running solid on stock firmware.
- Appears to have resolved my VPN issues which I had with my DD-WRT router, but it could be the fact that I also changed ISPs when I "upgraded" to this router.
- Keeps my internet as fast as it comes to the house across all wired ports.
- No issues with XBMC(Kodi), WMC and any media streaming I tried anywhere on the network.

Cons: - 5 GHz range is so small it is almost non-existent. If you have ONE wall (even with an open door in it) between this router and your phone/tablet and you are about 10-15 feet from that wall, forget about the 5GHz band. It either drops/reconnects when you least want it to, or it just times out, even though it shows connected.
- 2.4 GHz range is better, but still not as good as my wireless-N router had. There are some very unstable spots just 2 (hollow) walls and about 40 feet from this router.
- No DD-WRT, don't even hope on one. I really miss it.
- No frequent firmware updates. I have not seen a firmware update for the entire year I've owned it.
- DHCP reserved IPs limited to 16 clients. Terrible. I really don't need more than 20 reserved, but I had to do some costly sacrifices with my development VMs. If you are ok with setting static IPs this won't be a con for you, but I like to manage as many things as possible from one place.
- Wi-Fi speed not even close to marketed, but that was to be expected from all AC routers.

Other Thoughts: To me this is 3 and a half star product, much to be desired for the price and marketed speed. Didn't want to drop it to 3 stars as although it is limited on features, short-ranged and rather overpriced for what you get, this router has been providing a stable network for my home with a good amount of wired devices and a wild party of wireless users hopping on and off its radios 24/7.

If a firmware update comes out with support for 20+ DHCP clients and DD-WRT I'll raise this to 5 stars, even with the short wifi range.

1 out of 5 eggsKeeps disconnecting !

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router/Extender/AP, 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: If the thing worked properly I would imagine it would be a decent router for the price

Cons: the thing keeps disconnecting on 2.4GHZ , 5GHZ works better but disconnects as-well

Tried everything, upgrade firmware, different channels , I live in a small suburb so no interference (only 1 other router around)

So the thing simply is not working, I contacted support via email (no phone tech support) ... we will see what they will do, but so far not impressed

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

We are sorry about the disconnection during on line gaming.

Thank you for calling us so we can discuss the issue.

If you need further assistance, our tech support can be reached at (408)988-6092 or email " support@edimax.us ".

Best regards,

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router/Extender/AP, 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: Took a chance on this item as there were no other reviews when I bought it. Edimax isn't exactly a household name either. The device seemed like it hit all the right notes though so I went for it. Great decision. It was super easy to set up, works great. Only adds like 2-5ms to my ping and I don't notice any real latency. I don't use the AC standard but will most likely in the future so hopefully it lasts me a few years.

Cons: Range isn't that impressive but it works well enough. I have it connected to my TV and wifes computer (as well as mobile devices) via wifi and I bought a 75' ethernet cable to hardwire my PC to it.

Pros: Awesome router. Very fast. NO connection issues. Both bands very fast. Very happy with is router. To get a router like this for the price is a great upgrade.

Cons: Setup took a bit, but not a huge negative. Definitely not worth losing an egg over.

4 out of 5 eggsSet it and forget about it

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router/Extender/AP, 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: Very stable

Cons: Firmware gets the job done, but few extra features
No DD-WRT support

Other Thoughts: I have used this router for almost a year. Never have I needed to reboot this router or seen any abnormal connection issues. While the firmware is very stable, the feature set is somewhat limited. For example, I can see the MAC and IP addresses in the DHCP table, but no device names. And I can't manually add device names either. The range of the router is not bad, But I wonder if it could be improved by using 6dB antenna instead of the 3dB ones that come with it.

1 out of 5 eggsNetwork Drops

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router/Extender/AP, 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: Very fast WIFI speeds. I used two with one as an extender to have fast speeds for my media server, game consoles, and TV that aren't near my modem or primary router (also a BR-6478AC now). Setup was extremely simple.

Cons: Connection gets interrupted intermittently. Every 2-20 minutes, all traffic is lost and current connections are broken. This typically isn't an issue for normal browsing, but for gaming or things like Hangouts or Skype, you'll lose your connection every time this happens.

Devices have the latest firmware as of the time of this review (2.12).

Other Thoughts: This is happening to my computer (hard wired) and my tablet (wifi). I was in the same Hangouts (using my computer to show my screen and tablet for video and both would get disconnected at the same time. The other participants weren't having any issues so it wasn't the server.

My routers were very old so I bought two of these, one for my primary router, and the other to be a range extender. I've tried both units as my primary router and the problem is exactly the same. The speeds are really good when it's working, but the constant disconnects make it unusable for any application that requires a constant connection.

I'd give this device 5 eggs if they could fix this issue.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

We are sorry about the disconnect issue you are experiencing with our router.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic wireless router with easy installation

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router/Extender/AP, 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: - Very easy installation and set up
- Stylish looking
- Acts as a router, access point or range extender
- No issues with restarting
- Great internet speeds

Cons: - Antennas do not come off

Other Thoughts: I have had the Edimax Dual-Band AC1200 Router for about a week now and so far everything has gone extremely smoothly without any problems.

After unboxing, you will find the router, power cord, a CD to help with installation (but not required), an Ethernet cable, and rubber feet to attach to the bottom of the router, a couple screws if you want to wall mount it, and an installation guide.

The really nice this about this router is that not only will it replace (and upgrade) your old router, but it also can act as an access point and a range extender. It is very easy to flip between all the modes when needed.

The design of the router is very stylish. It has your normal ports – 4-1 Gb ethernet ports and one WAN port on the back. On the back it also has a radio on/off button and a WPS button. LED lights on the front are power, internet, 2.4GHz wireless, 5GHz wireless, WAN, and Lan 1-4. Basically everything you usually find in a router.

The one thing that sets this router apart from all other ones that I have used is the fact that once you plug everything in and find the “edimax.setup” SSID, when you open up your internet browser, you are immediately directed to the Edimax “get started” screen. This is different because usually I would have to plug in some IP address and it was a confusing mess. This eliminated all that hassle! Once connected, it will take you on a step by step journey to ensure that you are correctly connecting everything. I’m not a technology genius by any means and I was able to connect so that definitely says something about how easy it was!

This also gives a pretty good wireless signal. I live in an apartment complex and was more than 150 feet away from the router itself and was able to connect to my wifi without any problem. I had been renting out my router previously and this one blows that one out of the water! In the week that I’ve tested this, I have not once had to restart it, which I did have to do at least once every few days with my other router.

This is a fantastic router, one which I would recommend to anyone who is in the market for one. Not only does it look nice, but it also does its job very well. I also like the fact that it has the access point and range extender which are added bonuses. Therefore, I give this router a 5 star rating!

I was given this item as a sample in exchange for my fair and honest evaluation. In no way was I forced to give a positive review of this product and I stand by everything written in this review. If you have any questions about this product feel free to ask me and I would be more than happy to help out.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router for 9 months so far!

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router/Extender/AP, 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: 802.11ac speed, gigabit Ethernet connection, very stable wi-fi conneciton

Cons: the product is "hot"

Other Thoughts: I've had this wireless router for about 9 months. It was easy to hook up to modem and hasn't had any problems so far. Its very reliable. its very easy to connect to configuration page. Simply connect the wifi or ethernet connection to a pc or laptop, and then type in http://edimax.setup in your browser url bar, the default username is admin and password is 1234. I never heard about this company before but they did a solid job!
