1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't pull IP from Charter Cable Surfboard Modem

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router / Extender / AP 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides Simultaneous 2.4GHz & 5GHz with Gigabit Ports for Faster Connectivity, Features iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: Economically priced dual band AC router

Cons: Won't pull IP from Charter Cable Surfboard modem.

Other Thoughts: I spent three hours unplugging and plugging in the cable modem trying to get this router to pull an IP without any luck. I've owned 3 other routers and none of them have had to be bound by MAC addresses to work. I tried both with and without cloning the MAC address, the BR-6748AC refuses to work for me. Judging by similar complaints, it appears this is hit or miss. I cannot recommend this product to anyone.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We are sorry for the difficulty you are experiencing. We appreciate your feedback and would like to help you solve the problem.

You may try the following.
1. Power off the Cable Modem. Power off the Edimax router. Connect the Ethernet cable from Cable Modem to WAN port of Edimax router.
2. Power on the cable modem. Wait for 1 minute. Power on Edimax router. Wait for 1 minute.
3. Login to http://edimax.setup or http://192.168.2.1 to verify the Internet Connection IP address.

If you need any further assistance, please feel free to contact our tech support at (408)988-6092 or write an email to " support@edimax.us " directly.

Best regards,

4 out of 5 eggsWork without whistles and bells

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router / Extender / AP 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides Simultaneous 2.4GHz & 5GHz with Gigabit Ports for Faster Connectivity, Features iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: Price in this class of routers.
Very simple setup, You can use inbuilt setup wizard or do it manually. Both setup are good.
I have 2 of them in my networks used as wireless routers with Cable Internet provider. Both network have 2.4 and 5 GHz band with TV. PC, laptops, wireless printers, Roku and Macbook as wireless and wired clients. Routers work about 1.5 month and never dropped connection or requested restart.

Cons: No for a while.

Other Thoughts: This routers replaced 2 TP-Link Archer C7 AC1750 that have many problems with dropping connections and 5Ghz band without any hope to fix it.
These little Edimax routers have a not so good range and don't have USB ports but they give you very reliable basic functions for small business and simple home network.
Very satisfied.

5 out of 5 eggsWith a bit of effort, a great bridge

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router / Extender / AP 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides Simultaneous 2.4GHz & 5GHz with Gigabit Ports for Faster Connectivity, Features iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: - Customer service was excellent
- Streams flawless video over the internet and to the Xbox for Windows Media Center Playback
- Same amount of lag as wired connection
- Can be set up as a signal receiver (bridge/extender) or sender (router)

Cons: My computer runs Windows 8.1 and was struggling with AC1200 drivers, so I opted to go the bridge/range extender route. I was trying to set this up initially as a range extender with a hidden 5ghz extended signal, but this wasn't an option. I emailed customer service and they provided me with a workaround that I was able to complete in about 10 minutes.

Other Thoughts: Judy from customer service was patient with my emails and figured out a a work around for my problem. She provided me easy to follow, step-by-step instructions to get it working. Thanks, Judy!

3 out of 5 eggsRange issues

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router / Extender / AP 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides Simultaneous 2.4GHz & 5GHz with Gigabit Ports for Faster Connectivity, Features iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: Works great at short ranges, setup was easy

Cons: Unfortunately it has a weaker range than the basic n-band router I replaced - reaches office/living area fine, but frequent signal drops at the far end of the house - and its only a 1500sqft house.

Other Thoughts: I've been looking into the possibility of upgrading the antennas on the router to increase the range, but all of the ones on Newegg appear to be only 2.4ghz antennas, no 5 ghz option for the high-speed channel... Anyone have any suggestions that don't involve buying a second one to use as a repeater? As small as my house is, wireless range should not be an issue, the whole house is only about 60 feet from one end to the other.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

We are sorry for the issue you are experiencing.

You may want to change the wireless channel of the 2.4Ghz network settings in the router's setup page at http://192.168.2.1. Try channel 1, 6, or 11. You may experience different wireless range and performance.

If you need any further assistance, please contact our tech support at (408)988-6092 or write an email to " support@edimax.us ". Our tech support team will more than happy to assist you.

1 out of 5 eggsExtremely disappointed

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router / Extender / AP 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides Simultaneous 2.4GHz & 5GHz with Gigabit Ports for Faster Connectivity, Features iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: This router is not working just right out of the box when received. IT LOOKS SOLID, however it operates like a piece of junk I would give it zero egg if there was a zero egg because it wasted my time and effort. I would not recommend it to anyone.

Cons: This router is not working right at the first start. After some research and owning an excellent Edimax ac1200 adapter, I thought Edimax ac1200 router would offer good value and ordered one as an ac range extension for my big house. After receiving the router on 12/17/2013, I read the instruction and spent 4 hours on setting it up either wireless or wire by typing "edimax.setup" in the internet browser but the browser kept thinking indefinitely. I investigated the connection and the connection said "limited". I did try to hit the reset button, but it did not allow me to be on the setup page. I could not make it work so returned it within 24 hrs.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We are sorry for the difficulty you are experiencing.

If your computer is a Mac system, please use http://192.168.2.1 instead of "edimax.setup".

5 out of 5 eggsWorks quite well as an Access Point

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router / Extender / AP 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides Simultaneous 2.4GHz & 5GHz with Gigabit Ports for Faster Connectivity, Features iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: Great Tech Support, Dual-band Wireless-AC, Access Point / Router / Range Extender, Very Fast Speed

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I have little networking technical background. So I was a little nervous about purchasing a non-Linksys or non-NetGear network product. But I need a replacement for my old Linksys Access Point at my office. I purchase BR-6478AC as Access Point because of its positive customer reviews.
The best feature that sold me on this Edimax BR-6478AC was that it can be setup as a Wireless-AC Access Point, Repeater, or a Router.
Set up is very easy. The software alone is worth the purchase. You do not need any disk to setup. You can choose the mode (Router/ Range extender/Access Point) depending on your needs.
For my situation, it works great as an Access Point in our office. I used Mac OS to configure it with no problems at all. Great 3-in-1 device for the price. Moreover, the Edimax tech support was great. If you're not a technical guy, they'll take care of it for you.
The price is a very affordable and reasonable solution for Wireless 802.11ac. You can't beat this product for both the price and the service behind it.

5 out of 5 eggsCost effective 802.11ac solution

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router / Extender / AP 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides Simultaneous 2.4GHz & 5GHz with Gigabit Ports for Faster Connectivity, Features iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: Access point, 1000mb port, Great feature set, Seems to have good range, Easy to upgrade, Looks gorgeous.

Cons: Documentation seriously poor. BR-6478AC has many features but you must dig through the manual (in the disc). Need to reboot after changing the setting.

Other Thoughts: I recently replaced my old D-Link DIR-655 with this new BR-6478AC. everything went very smooth out of package. It is amazing, advance configuration, great features. It is the best wireless AC dual-band router in the market under $100.
The hardware is solid, the connections are fast and reliable (no drop connection), and the setup is very easy. I have read its review on Smallnetbuilder.com. The performance seems very good. It works very well so far.
Before setup I checked the Edimax YouTube videos, I think it is a great job covering the setup process. I could setup it without a computer!
Here are some suggestions:
1) Download the latest firmware from edimax website

2) If you setup it as a Range Extender, you better have a wireless-AC dual band router

3) Use WPA2 with AES encryption for best security

4) Find the best channel to get strongest signal.

The router is super fast. I actually have 51.xx Mbps on speedtest.net “WIRELESSLY” So far this is working great. It is one of the best wireless routers I have had. Highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 eggsQuick and easy setup without a PC, 5 EGG Product!

This review is from: Edimax BR-6478AC Dual-Band AC1200 Router / Extender / AP 3-in-1 Smart Device, Provides Simultaneous 2.4GHz & 5GHz with Gigabit Ports for Faster Connectivity, Features iQ-Setup for Easy Installation via Smartphone/Tablet

Pros: Easy Setup by iPad, Great Performance, 3-in-1 function (Router + Repeater + Access Point), affordable price. GREAT VALUE!

Cons: n/a

Other Thoughts: I have a Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station Router (ME918LL/A) in my study room (1st floor) and it is getting very weak wireless signal reception in the upstairs bedrooms of my house. I cannot find a Wireless-AC Range Extender until Edimax BR-6478AC 3-in-1 Router / Extender / AP has Extender function. I decided to install Edimax BR-6478AC as a range extender to improve my Wi-Fi signal in my bedrooms.

CD-Less SETUP-

The Setup was easy and BR-6478AC connected to my existing wireless (SSID) within a minute. I am able to create a different SSID or keep use the same SSID as my original router. I recommend you to use the existing SSID with '_EXT' added. For example, if your existing SSID is "WirelessNetwork" youshould name your extender SSID as "WirelessNetwork_EXT". Then you will know your iPhone or other device connect to the Range Extender instead of original router.

PERFORMANCE-

I also run a speed test on the BR-6478AC 3-In-1 Router/Access Point/Range Extender. The testing result was more than I was expecting. The up/download speeds were much better than ever. It works as Range Extender and eliminate dead or weak Wireless spots.

Edimax BR-6478AC Range Extender Mode:

Connected to home router (Motorola SURFboard SBG6580):

- Speed Test: 5.9 Mbps Down / 1.2 Mbps Up (1 bar)

Connected to BR-6478AC Range Extender:

- Speed Test: 15.4 Mbps down / 5.1 Mbps Up (Full bars)

CONCLUSION-

Simple, Simple and SIMPLE. Overall I do really like this Edimax BR-6478AC as a Ranger Extender. I now consistently have strong Wi-Fi reception in the
upstairs bedrooms. I love it, and would recommend it to anyone!! Best wireless product of the year!
