3 out of 5 eggsGet worse after a while

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7238RPD N300 Concurrent Dual-Band Universal Wi-Fi Range Extender / Repeater / Bridge, Wall Plug Design

Pros: Phone under the coverage of this is good.....works excellent on youtube or web surf except PC.

Cons: around a month After I uses it. it keeps disconnected from internet in around 3 seconds and connect back on even with cable...it's not a good idea for raid gaming like Vindictus( 1 second of disconnection will kick you out from the game right away...it's really bad!!) While I was playing GTAV OL on my PS4, it keeps disconnecting meanwhile on my OL mission with my mates...everything went off and i have to redo it with my mates again! BAD!

Other Thoughts: If you connect this extender with phone is ok...but PC online gaming is not a good idea

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for the issues you are experiencing.

Please make sure the extender have the latest firmware v1.16. If possible, use WPA2 AES encryption in your WiFi router. Don’t put the EW-7238RPd too far away from your WiFi router. Ideally, the EW-7238RPd receive 60% signal strength from your WiFi router.

Some online games require low ping rate 100m/s or less to be latency free. You may check your ping response time.

For further assistance, we will need to know your Internet Service Provider, and the brand and the model of your WiFi router.

Please feel free to contact us at (408)988-6092 or write an email to " support@edimax.us ". We will be glad to provide any necessary assistance to resolve the issue. Thank you.

Best regards,
Edimax Customer Support Team

2 out of 5 eggsIt's meh

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7238RPD N300 Concurrent Dual-Band Universal Wi-Fi Range Extender / Repeater / Bridge, Wall Plug Design

Pros: It mostly repeated and extended the wifi range.

Cons: 1. I always had to reset it because it repeated our wifi signal slowly.
2. It wouldn't let me repeat the same SSID as my normal WIFI network. Reading online it was supposed to provide that feature but instead I had to repeat with a different SSID.

Other Thoughts: If asked to buy this over again, I wouldn't. Ultimately I got tired of having to reset it constantly and I finally just stopped using it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for the issues you are experiencing.

Our extender can use the same wireless network name (SSID) with the primary network. Please see the attached setup picture.

Indeed, most people prefer to use the same SSID (network name) for extender and hope the WiFi device can pick up the proper network automatically.

We call the ability of changing access point while remaining connected to Internet “WiFi roaming”. Though these two WiFi networks use the same name, your WiFi devices actually aware that they are two different hardware with different signal strength.

The roaming is dependent on the WiFi device’s “roam trigger.” In other words, the WiFi device decides when it is time to drop one AP and move to another. Some WiFi devices are more sophisticated and do a better job of determining at what point to let go of an AP, while others may hang on for a longer period of time before triggering a roam to a new AP. The roam trigger is completely client dependent. Based on our experience, most wireless devices can not switch to the proper wireless network properly.

Therefore, we prefer our users use different SSID so it will be easy to identify which WiFi network is connected.

Regarding the drop connection issue, this can be related with the location of the extender. The extender needs to be in a location where it can receive proper WiFi signal from the original WiFi network. Sometimes interference from other WiFi network may cause the extender drop connection and need to reset to establish the connection again. We need to know more information in order to investigate this issue.

Please feel free to contact us at (408)988-6092 or write an email to " support@edimax.us ". We will be glad to provide any necessary assistance to resolve the issue. Thank you.

5 out of 5 eggsSimplest thing to setup. Works very well.

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7238RPD N300 Concurrent Dual-Band Universal Wi-Fi Range Extender / Repeater / Bridge, Wall Plug Design

Pros: Works exactly as advertised. I probably didn't need the 5Ghz version since my router doesn't support that. Anyways, setup was a breeze. Used to get a better signal for a Roku streaming stick in our living room as well as better signal in our basement.

Cons: None really. On/Off switch can be hard to get to if you have something plugged in under it.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks very well

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7238RPD N300 Concurrent Dual-Band Universal Wi-Fi Range Extender / Repeater / Bridge, Wall Plug Design

Pros: Works very well paired with the ASUS RT-N66U wireless router. Needed to extend signal in the basement for SMART TV. Set-up was simple over wifi with my laptop. Have not had issues with dropping connections.

Cons: Accessing the extender to set-up the security was not as straightforward as with routers. For some reason the IP address did not work. I think it might have been due to using Chrome instead of IE or FireFox which allow for bookmarking the router "page" during set-up.

1 out of 5 eggsItem is DOA before you even get it!

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7238RPD N300 Concurrent Dual-Band Universal Wi-Fi Range Extender / Repeater / Bridge, Wall Plug Design

Pros: Concept is a good one and simple

Cons: power switch in easy place to turn it off
Doesn't work for longer than 2 hours
WiFi distance less than original WiFi router, so short its not out reaching the original router.
RMA this

Other Thoughts: I am updating my previous review of this product.
I believe that I was far too positive and gave Edimax more credit than they needed.
After working with ED tech support for 2 hours their device is a EPIC FAIL. They admitted that they are seeing a HIGH RETURN RATE for these types of devices.
As a Sr. Network Engineer (10+yrs) - I should not have had to call tech support to verify this is bad or even set it up. For those of you with less technical knowledge.... just send it back for a refund now.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for the issues you are experiencing.

During the trouble shooting process when last time you called us, we together found something strange about the behaviors of the dd-wrt firmware in your router. You mentioned that you are going to report that possible bug or monitor the status, and then contact us again.
Besides, we never said anything like seeing high return rate. There might be kind of misunderstanding. You also mentioned in previous review that you had tried other extenders and all failed. Therefore, we still stand behind our product to try to resolve the issues.

For any further assistance, please contact us again at (408)988-6092 or write an email to " support@edimax.us ". We will be glad to provide any necessary assistance to resolve the issue. Thank you.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat WIFI Extender

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7238RPD N300 Concurrent Dual-Band Universal Wi-Fi Range Extender / Repeater / Bridge, Wall Plug Design

Pros: It works great! I love it. Once you figure out how to use the IQ setup and understand networking it's a piece of cake to extend wifi throughout the house. That's two floors and lots of walls. Excellent tech support.

Cons: Can be frustrating when something goes wrong and you have to troubleshoot. But it might not be the extenders fault.

Other Thoughts: This is my second Edimax extender. The first one I used for over a year but only supported 2.4Ghz. It worked great for almost a year then started to drop the signal. The IP address kept changing and my wireless printer didn't like that much. Very frustrating! I called edimax and tech support was very helpful and knowledgeable. They had me change the channel on my router. It seemed all of my neighbors' wifi were set to the same channel and it confused the Edimax. They also had me switch the security setting to WPA2 only. They helped me check firmware which was up to date and It hasn't skipped a beat since. Didn't need any help setting this new one up because of the experience I got on the last one. Looking forward to running this one through its paces.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well but beware of powerful microwave ovens

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7238RPD N300 Concurrent Dual-Band Universal Wi-Fi Range Extender / Repeater / Bridge, Wall Plug Design

Pros: Small size, ability to plug into standard outlet, easy to set up and good price

Cons: It gets "broken" when we use our 1300W microwave, but turning it on & off fixes it.

Other Thoughts: I bought this because after we had to move our router to another room due to cabling issues, the signal at the far end of our L-shaped house wasn't good enough to stream video. I almost sent it back because the extender would continually stop working. I finally realized that it was our 1300W microwave oven that was doing it. The oven also effected our router when it was in the kitchen area - it is an unfortunate side effect of the 2.4GHz band. A lower power microwave probably wouldn't cause this issue. We now just turn the extender on and off after using the microwave and the signal is fine. It is a minor inconvenience in exchange for reliable wireless in my bedroom.

2 out of 5 eggsSimilar to others - EDIMAX FAIL

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7238RPD N300 Concurrent Dual-Band Universal Wi-Fi Range Extender / Repeater / Bridge, Wall Plug Design

Pros: Cheap
Easy to set up

Cons: no options to not have separate WIFI names for separate bands. Requires multiple network log-in's for all devices to auto select best signal.
Works for a bout 1 day then I need to switch off and back on.
Range sucks. its about 20 feet or 6.6 meeters. My Cisco Linksys e300 is about 60 feet or 20 meeters. I was hoping for something similar to that as it advertised a better transmitter.

Other Thoughts: 2 star given for ease of set up.
Upgraded firmware to latest and issues continued.
This is the first FAIL I have ever purchased from EDIMAX. I'm let down that this isn't as high quality as their other equipment i have purchased.

I called support and the system would auto return my call by the next rep. its been 3 days.... no call yet.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

We are sorry for the issue you are experiencing.

You can make the same ESSID on the 2.4Ghz network and 5Ghz network. Please refer the attachment.

Indeed, most people prefer to use the same SSID (network name) for extender and hope the WiFi device can pick up the proper network automatically.

We call the ability of changing access point while remaining connected to Internet “WiFi roaming”. Though these two WiFi networks use the same name, your WiFi devices actually aware that they are two different hardware.

Based on our experience, some tablets, smart phones, and wireless adapters of laptops failed to do this job properly. They will keep the weak connection while there is a stronger signal available.

Since we have no idea of users’ WiFi devices, we prefer our users use different SSID and they can manually choose the proper WiFi network.

Our extender definitely can use the same ESSID with the primary network. You may give it a try and see if your wireless devices can select the proper wireless network automatically.

We checked our voice system. We do not have any un-answered inquiry. We are sorry that if we failed to call you back.

If you need any further assistance, please contact our tech support at (408)988-6092 or write an email to " support@edimax.us ". Our tech support team will more than happy to assist you.

Best regards,
Edimax Tech Support Team
