4 out of 5 eggsTiny Powerful WiFi Hardware

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7811UTC AC600 Dual-band USB 2.0 Wireless Mini Adapter, ideally for upgrading Laptop, desktop, Macbook or Ultrabook with 433/150Mbps data rates

Pros: Excellent signal strength with minimal profile. Seriously the adapter is tiny, no extra antenna or any of that nonsense. Supports all the current standards and WPA2.

Cons: Setup on Ubuntu required researching drivers and following command-line steps. I didn't think this would be much hassle, but I did need to connect ethernet in the first place. And then a day later, a kernel update overwrote my changes!

So the second time I browsed github and copied the driver archive to USB flash drive, and sneaker-netted it to my new PC with the adapter :p

The hardware clearly works well, but I do have to knock an egg because I bought this specifically for Ubuntu and expect a simpler install process from Edimax.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7811UTC AC600 Dual-band USB 2.0 Wireless Mini Adapter, ideally for upgrading Laptop, desktop, Macbook or Ultrabook with 433/150Mbps data rates

Pros: Worked well once I got it installed, ac speeds of 433 Mbps and n speeds of 72 Mbps.

Price was very good.

Tech support was fantastic

Cons: Difficult to install on my Win7 partition (mostly due to Zone Alarm though it seems). Even after I got it installed and working it didn't want to update the driver (on the Win7) to the latest version.

Other Thoughts: The adapter is very small, so it's unobtrusive and not easy to hit or knock loose, but it could be easy to misplace.

I installed this on a laptop with a dual boot, a Windows 7 and a Windows 8.1. It installed flawlessly on the Win8, with the latest drivers and worked great first time, and it continues to work great.

On the Win7 partition it installed but it was disabled and wouldn't work. After emailing their tech support (and several email exchanges) we got it working acceptably well, though with older drivers.

Judy at their tech support narrowed in on the issue right away. It seems that Zone Alarm and Bitdefender don't play well with installing new wireless adapters. I had to completely remove/uninstall Zone Alarm to get it to work. After it was installed and working I did reinstall Zone Alarm and the wireless adapter continued to work as expected.

We got the adapter installed and working in one day, by exchanging emails. I am very impressed with their tech support. The wireless adapter I'm satisfied with.

5 out of 5 eggsSuper in replacing bad WIFI card, never fails to get wifi hotspots

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7811UTC AC600 Dual-band USB 2.0 Wireless Mini Adapter, ideally for upgrading Laptop, desktop, Macbook or Ultrabook with 433/150Mbps data rates

Pros: Got this to replace an Intel 6200 card in a refurbished Dell Latitude E6410 that only worked a couple of times before it died. It has worked perfectly with Windows 7 in it had always picked up wifi networks while outside and has yet to lose a signal. The fact that it's the next generation is also a big plus. It's also not too big, which is good in some ways as it makes storing inside a backpack or bad compartment easy.

Cons: Only real cons are that the item is TINY and so is the installation disc. It's so small that I have to keep it in its original box until I use it as otherwise, it can easily get lost and the installation disc is a mini-CD that some DVD drives might not be able to handle.

Other Thoughts: The wifi piece does exactly what I installed it for. Although some have reported problems using it with Windows 8.1, if you are using Windows 7 and I assume earlier versions of Windows, it works like its supposed to and well worth it. Will have to get the AC 1200 version of this at some point.

Highly underrated company.

5 out of 5 eggsWindows 8.1 - Solved

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7811UTC AC600 Dual-band USB 2.0 Wireless Mini Adapter, ideally for upgrading Laptop, desktop, Macbook or Ultrabook with 433/150Mbps data rates

Pros: Small, Fast, GREAT customer service from edimax!

Cons: Drivers on disc do not work for all operating systems.
Multiple compatible driver versions on website, hard to find "correct" one.

Other Thoughts: I'm running windows 8.1 on my new i5-4690 desktop build. I bought this badboy to use since my GPU covers my only PCI slot. Many people have problems with windows 8.1 and this thing working together. If you follow the instructions that come with the adapter your computer will probably just crash and go into a reboot/crash/reboot loop. Here's what you need to do:

1. Before plugging in the adapter, go to www.edimax.us go to downloads and under "802.11AC Adapter" you will find "EW-7811UTC" for windows and mac. Download the windows driver (file should end in 1.0.1.8 as of 31 July 2014).

2. Unzip the file (extract, whatever). Navigate to:
"1.0.1.8_Edimax_7822UAC\CD_AC1200\Windows" Run "Setup.exe" application. Follow onscreen instructions.

Note: I realize that this driver is for the AC1200, but it works for the AC600 too and is newer (more bug fixes) than the 1.0.1.6 that can also be found on the site.

3. Restart computer, plug in the adapter and it should be working!

Additional troubleshooting:
I was getting great connection speeds in the same room as router. When I moved to another room my speed dropped but I still had 4/5 bars of connectivity. I tried various different ports on the back (both USB 2.0 and 3.0) because I didn't want it taking up a front port. I called tech support and they told me to try a USB port on the front instead of the back, something to do with signal strength suffering when against a wall. Sure enough, BAM - speeds only slightly lower than when in the same room as the router (to be expected). So yeah it takes up a front port, but I think that is due to physics, not the adapter. Great product so far, hope the trend continues.

2 out of 5 eggsEdimax 7811-Not Impressed

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7811UTC AC600 Dual-band USB 2.0 Wireless Mini Adapter, ideally for upgrading Laptop, desktop, Macbook or Ultrabook with 433/150Mbps data rates

Pros: Installation from the CD was easy and then updating the firmware using a download from the Edimax website was also easy.

Cons: Poor performance

Other Thoughts: I purchased the Edimax EW7811UTC to take advantage of the 5Ghz band from my Asus Dark Knight router, which is an awesome router by the way. Installation from the CD was easy and then updating the firmware using a download from the Edimax website was also easy. However, I was really disappointed in the performance. I used InSSIDer 3 to verify connection to the 2.4 or 5 Ghz band. 95% of the time the Edimax would connect to the 2.4Ghz band and not the 5Ghz band even though the 5Ghz band was showing to be present via InSSIDer 3.

Even when it was connected to the 5Ghz band the best speed was 38Mbps download, which is not too bad. Yet most of the time, the edimax connected to the 2.4Ghz with download speeds of 12Mbs or less. The strangest thing I noticed about the Edimax adapter was that is did not sustain a consistent signal from the router only 8 feet away. During the OOKLA download tests, the signal always had a saw tooth appearence.

I'm going to put the TP Link WN725N back on the laptop which consistently beats the Edimax. The TP Link download speeds were 38 to 55Mbs on the 2.4Ghz band

Just to put these numbers into perspective, I have Fios 50/25 and get wired download speeds of about 58Mbs and wired uploads of 34Mbs.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Zulala,

We are sorry for the performance issue you are experiencing with our EW-7811UTC.

Is your computer a Windows 8.1 with USB 3.0 port? We might have a newer driver for you.

Do you use the SAME SSID of the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks of your Asus Dark Knight router? Can you please make them use different SSID? We think this will help EW-7811UTC connect to the correct 5Ghz network.

Please give it a try. If you need any further assistance on our products, please feel free to contact our tech support at (408)988-6092 or write an email to " support@edimax.us " directly.

Best regards,

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed...

This review is from: EDIMAX EW-7811UTC AC600 Dual-band USB 2.0 Wireless Mini Adapter, ideally for upgrading Laptop, desktop, Macbook or Ultrabook with 433/150Mbps data rates

Pros: Great price.
Works well with my old Windows 7 machine.

Cons: Does not work with my Windows 8 machine. The machine crashes every time I insert it into the USB port.

Other Thoughts: I built a new Windows 8 machine and ordered this card because of the great price and high speeds. When I opened the box, there was a message inside that told me to download the Windows 8 drivers before inserting it. I followed the instructions and the machine crashed every time I inserted it into the USB port. I swapped it with my adapter in my old Windows 7 machine and it works perfectly. So at least I am still getting use out of it. I wouldn't recommend buying this until the Windows 8 drivers work.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Rollade,

We are sorry for the difficulty you are experiencing to use our EW-7811UTC with your new computer. We would like to help you resolve the issue.

You probably have Windows 8.1 instead of Windows 8. Windows 8.1 is trickier than Windows 8. There is a bad built-in driver embedded in Windows 8.1 which does not work properly for our EW-7811UTC. Therefore, if our driver is not installed properly for some reason and users plug in EW-7811UTC adapter, the built-in driver will crash Windows 8.1.

Please go to "Control Panel" in Windows 8.1. Go to "System and Security". Go to "Windows Update". Click on "Check for Updates". Look into the list of "Optional updates". You may see the Realtek update for Edimax Wireless Adapter. Apply that optional update. Then your Windows 8.1 will have the correct driver for our wireless adapter.

Please give it a try. If you need any further assistance on our products, please feel free to contact our tech support at (408)988-6092 or write an email to " support@edimax.us " directly.

Best regards,
Edimax Customer Service Team

Pros: Great Price.
Works well with my Windows 7 machine.

Cons: Does not work with my new Windows 8 machine, causing my new computer to crash every time.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for my new Windows 8 machine that I built and was very disappointed. When I opened the box, the message on the inside was if you have a Windows 8 machine, don't stick this into your USB port. Download the latest drivers from Edimax first. I downloaded and installed the supposed Windows 8 drivers and when I inserted the adapter, my machined proceeded to crash. I tried this multiple times and even reloaded the Windows 8 drivers and it wouldn't work. I wound up swapping my adapter with the adapter for my Windows 7 machine and it works perfectly. So at least I'm getting use out of it, even if it is for my older machine that my kids use. Don't buy it until Edimax provides Windows 8 support. I'm sure it will work very well once it is compatible.

Manufacturer Response:
