5 out of 5 eggsThe perfect SOHO switch

Pros: This is a managed 10/100 switch with a gigabit uplink port in a steel case for under $100. I pushed this device to the limit of my equipment and it didn't even flinch. If you know SNMP and are familiar with TCP/IP security, this can become the core of your small office network. It has replaced Catalyst switches in our offices.

Cons: We use 10" racks for local offices. Even though the unit fits between the rails, is 1U in height, and there are tapped holes in the side, rackmount ears are not available for this model. It only has 8 ports, 7 outbound ports if you use the uplink. If more than 8 ports are needed, consider the equivalent 24 port model HP J9080A.

Other Thoughts: Like most things, there are pros and cons to this excellent piece of kit. If it fits your need as it does for ours, it has no equal that I have found.

5 out of 5 eggsVery good value 1000Mbps 8 port hub

Pros: Great price, 8 ports, auto sensing, very fast

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: A must have for HD streaming and NAS storage access. I have super fast FIOS, I have multiple media servers, NAS, HD Homerun 2 tuners, VOIP phones, etc. NO PROBLEM AT ALL.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Niche Product

Pros: Ideal for media centers, colocation sites and other applications where more and/or faster ports are overkill, but management is a must.

The GigE port!

Yes, it does VLAN

SNMP Management

Cons: At this price I can't complain. It's meant to play with other HP products. But since every other big-name networking OEM does the same thing. Knowing how to use SNMP mitigates this problem for the most part.

Other Thoughts: Now that more and more A/V stuff has (usually 10/100) Ethernet ports, this is a better alternative to using that old 10/100 4-port hub, or running more Ethernet cable than is necessary. Ditto for small (< 1/2 rack) colo environments, where rack space costs money, and you're not doing Gigabit throughput. It's nice for isolating slower stuff from inexpensive unmanaged GigE switches w/ jumbo frames.

I'm using existing, unused RG6 coaxial cable runs and Netgear MCAB1001 MoCA Coax-Ethernet Adapters to network my apartment. Adding a J9079A to each room lets me keep Internet and LAN channels separate for security. I ~could~ use my multi-kilobuck Catalyst switches for this purpose, but that would be silly...and noisy! ;)

5 out of 5 eggsHP J9079A 10/100Mbps

Pros: VLAN Capable
Good price for a small, manageable switch
Small footprint and quiet
Faster then cheaper Home products

Cons: Not rackable
Newegg didn't have in stock When I need to order switch.

Other Thoughts: You must update firmware on switch which fixes with VLAN issues. Version 2.4 is latest.

5 out of 5 eggsVLAN Capable

Pros: * VLAN Capable (Despite what another posted)
* Good price for a small, manageable switch
* Small footprint and quiet

Cons: * The management web interface is different from that of their bigger switches such as the 2610, which I'm used to, but was able to figure it out after reading the user manual on the HP ProCurve website.

Other Thoughts: Despite what another posted in their review, this switch is capable of supporting VLANs. I needed a switch for one of our smaller office buildings with VLAN support so I bought this switch. I was able to configure it to work with our largely Cisco network and have it support and pass traffic to our 3 VLANs without any problem. It works so well and is small enough I'll probably buy another for our work bench.

5 out of 5 eggsNice product.

Pros: Lifetime warrenty!
Good value.

Cons: No screw mounting for wall or under surface mounting.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this to replace one of my few remaining Netgear junk switches, which all seem to die in 2-3 years. I was attracted to this product by the HP procurve reputation and the lifetime warrenty. Although I don't really need the management features, I like being able to see that the switch is working correctly. Worth the additional cost for something that will last.

5 out of 5 eggsGood little switch

Pros: Small footprint

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: This little switch was the perfect replacement for a Netgear that was flaky. I had some experience with the larger Pro Curve switches so I gave this one a try. So far I've been satisfied with it although I haven't had time to fool with the management features much yet. Just having the ability to manage the switch at all seems like a big advantage over other switches in this class and price range.

4 out of 5 eggsmeh - not what I need

Pros: professional appearance, good brand, reasonable performance, reasonable cost

***Would be a fine purchase for customers who want an 8-port Fast Ethernet switch with a manageable web interface - especially those who want an alternative to consumer brands like Linksys, Netgear, and DLink***

Cons: The VLANs and trunking over the web interface were not what I expected.

I am unable to trunk the vlans that I create to my Cisco 871w router. I purchased this over a cheaper (L1nksys) switch at checkout because of its support for vlans and trunking. You cannot trunk vlans over an interface to other devices (like a router). Maybe I am too used to the IOS environment and virtual interfaces.

Other Thoughts: I got this for the vlans, trunking and GbE "uplink". Just understand that this doesn't have the feature set of enterprise networking products.

I guess I expected a C1sc0-like experience for the price of this 8-port switch, but it didn't deliver...

4 out of 5 eggsDecent switch but seems slow

Pros: - Web-managed switch with VLAN support
- Gigabit uplink port
- Great price for a web-managed switch
- Lifetime warranty
- ProCurve quality and reputation

Cons: - 4ms when pinging the switch. Expected <1ms. Hopefully, pinging other devices will not be this slow.

Other Thoughts: I'll be using a pair of these to bring two VLANs (LAN & DMZ) from an ALIX.2C1 router to another part of the house.
