4 out of 5 eggsGood Switch, Deceptive Advertising

Pros: Reliable, Easily Configurable, Rugged

Cons: Only receives Upstream POE, does not provide Downstream POE. This means that the switch can be powered via POE, but cannot power devices (such as IP Phones) using POE. The advertising did not not clearly state this.

1 out of 5 eggsItem not as described

Pros: It is a gig switch and does support vlans and jumbo frames.

Cons: It isn't POE, it can obtain power from a standard PoE device on Port 1, making the switch ideal for deployments where a power outlet is not available; such flexibility helps you extend the network to wherever an Ethernet cable can reach.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Switch

Pros: Blazing fast full gig switch, powered via PoE. Web interface is nice and much faster than the one on my previous Cisco Small Business switch. Port mirroring works well. Completely silent.

Cons: Update process is a bit complex with dual images

Other Thoughts: Wish the 16-port model was PoE...

3 out of 5 eggstakes PoE, does not give PoE

Pros: Can be powered via PoE if you already have that on your network.

Cons: Does not power downstream devices. I misunderstood the product description.

5 out of 5 eggsHP gigabit switch

Pros: This is a true gigabit switch. For some reason, other switches claim to be and are not gigabit. hmmmmm. I love rebooting this switch remotely. Saves me lots of time.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Update to newest firmware P2.2 I think it is.

3 out of 5 eggsNot very configurable

Pros: Warranty, speed, some configurations. Works right out of the box.

Cons: I'm not expert on configuring switches. The configuration setup for this ProCurve is different than the demo software on HP's site. Not even close. When you figure cost per port it's right up there with some higher end ProCurve products so I'm not sure why they don't have the same functionality. I don't need 24 ports but would like to have that.

Other Thoughts: I'm not sure if there are better options out there for 8 port 1 Gig, "managed" switches. Still, since it doesn't do what I was hoping for probably could've got one a little less expensive and unmanaged.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat switch

Pros: We use ~8 of these switches in an office/lab environment where we didn't want fans to make noise, and these little switches are fantastic!! (we also have the 24-port version, and are equially happy with those) The VLAN support is great and overall a lot of functionality for the money.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: As some other reviewer stated: The PoE statement from Newegg is inaccurate as this switch does NOT provide PoE. However, it can be powered by using an uplink to port #1 from a PoE capable switch. We have been running these 8 port switches off PoE (without using the external power supply) with great success.

5 out of 5 eggsThe best GigE network tap on earth

Pros: Can mirror data from multiple ports, even on different vlans, to one sniffer port. Latest software from Mar2010 includes new features, including enhanced snmp.

Cons: No spanning tree protocol support, although it has a proprietary loop prevention option. This means you can't use it as part of a redundant switched path.

Other Thoughts: I use this primarily for network monitoring and diagnostics. Port mirroring at GigE speeds is fantastic, and the snmp support lets you track historical statistics as well. small, highly portable, and the PoE power optinon let's me just snap it into an existing network without scrounging for an AC outlet. To get all feature info, see firmware release notes.

5 out of 5 eggsHP 1810g switch

Pros: Great little switch. Make sure you upgrade this to the latest firmware. Making vlans on this is easy.

Cons: Find the manual on HP's web site not so easy.

4 out of 5 eggsGood switch - if you only need 8 ports

Pros: Pretty easy to setup. Pretty good documentation, although, hard to sift through on HP's site.

Cons: THIS IS NOT A POE SWITCH. NEWEGG'S SPEC'S ARE INACCURATE. It has a ONE port on it, that can RECEIVE POWER through an actual POE switch for BACKUP POWER. THIS SWITCH CANNOT POWER A POE CAPABLY DEVICE.
