The HP 1900-8G switch delivers entry level Layer 2 Gigabit switching solutions in a compact and quiet desktop enclosure, customized and priced for small and mid-sized organizations. Without sacrificing the functionality normally required on managed networks, this managed switch offers tremendous value to small and medium businesses that need a level of control over their network not offered by unmanaged switching products-but require a low-cost solution. The HP 1900-8G switch helps build a voice ready network with QoS, Radius authentication and other features. This switch has seven 10/100/1000 ports, and a dual-purpose Gigabit port (configurable as 10/100/1000 copper or SFP-based fiber) to connect to high performance computers, servers, or network backbones. To ensure optimal use of the network bandwidth and maximum voice and data quality, traffic flow can be directed according to the needs of the business.
Pros: Great switch at a great price! Very easy to set up and manage. The fact it senses DHCP and grabs a local address from your DHCP server makes it very easy to get it set up in the place you want it to be used and get it wired up in place, since the switch interface will come up on your DHCP server's subnet. I am using the one I bought in a home theater system with multiple networked components, so this switch is a bit overkill, but I wanted a managed smart switch for various reasons - mostly tinkering. This one has tons of features. The cable testing is very slick and useful. I have a 100' run of CAT 7 that is run to the other side of my house and being able to test it is a real plus since I had to pull it pretty hard through some conduit and was afraid I had damaged it. The switch tells me all is well with the cable. Try that with a dumb switch! Not gonna happen. I like this thing so much - especially at this price - I am buying 2 more to set up a proper home network.
Cons: Mine came with very old firmware from 2008, so I went to the HP website and grabbed the newest firmware. Very easy to upgrade, but it does reset all your settings when you do - just make sure upgrading the firmware is the first thing you do and then set it up afterwards. Thankfully, I had only set a couple of the settings before I upgraded and reset them. I should have known better anyway, so I really blame myself this this little snafu.

it's a 3com switch
Pros: fanless, so its quiet. 70 days of uptime ang going. rapid spanning tree works.
Cons: SFPs cost more than the switch. But you're probably not going to use optical uplinks with this class of switch. a real CLI would have been nice.
Other Thoughts: Hp bought 3com. This is just a renamed 3com office connect Managed Gigabit Switch 8. If you need to update the software, it may be easier to get it from 3com' web site rather than HP's.
