runs tomato like a champ

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Flashed it with Tomato in about 5 mins. Nice wireless, small and efficient (pulls 3 watts from the wall--I checked), good build quality. Fast processor (240 mhz) and decent amount of flash + ram. Really cheap w/rebate.
Cons: The stock firmware is a complete joke; if Asus were smart they'd fire the people they hired to make that stuff and just use an open-source firmware package. Without tomato, I'd rate this thing 1 to 2 stars. Flashing w/Tomato or DD-WRT is essential.
Other Thoughts: Great deal--will make your network rock solid w/tomato

Good router. Not great

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: It was cheap. Looks like it's well build. Can install DD-WRT or Tomato firmware.
Handles torrents with no problem up to 4000 connections. No freezing, no lockups.
Cons: Bad QOS, could not get it working well ether with DD-WRT or Tomato (I have two VoIP phones ). Average Wi-FI performance. USB on this router is useless. I have it disabled
Other Thoughts: Running Tomato Firmware v1.22.1569

junk

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: It looks ok I guess.
Cons: Out of the box it doesn't even work, won't hold a connection. It says DD-WRT is "supported," but it isn't. You have to go through some hugger-mugger process to install a third party firmware. I ended up installing tomato and it seems to work ok now. The naming conventions they use for this router are also dumb. I guess they had to be unique.
Other Thoughts: I would have sent it back instead of installing tomato if it wouldn't have been a hassle to send it back. Stay away from this piece of ridiculousness unless you plan on installing a third party firmware. -2 eggs, terrible.

Great with Tomato

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Price and it supports third party firmware. The system default reset function works. The firmware upgrade software works. I've upgraded, downgraded and modified the device numerous times and haven't "bricked" the device.
Cons: Limited features with shipped firmware.
Other Thoughts: I needed a wireless bridge and print server to extend my wireless network to my PC and USB printer in the living room. So, with fingers crossed, I purchased the Asus WL-520GU and a USB splitter.

The user manual and features offered with the shipped firmware are very limited. I tried using the shipped firmware but stopped when I discovered that the unit is limited to WEP when used as a wireless bridge.

So, I tried out DD-WRT. DD-WRT worked and is a great program. However, I was unable, after several days of tinkering, to get the USB print server to function using DD-WRT.

Then I found the USB mod of Tomato. 20 minutes after installing I was up and running. Tomato supports client bridge mode using WPA AES PSK and recognizes my C4180 HP USB printer. Every print job I have sent to the printer has printed properly (I sent PDF's, word doc's, envelopes, etc.). Tomato also supports switching the printer between my PC and the router without needing to reboot the router.

Rebate Happiness

white Reviewed By: Systems Guy on 11/11/2009

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Bypassed the stock firmware within 30 minutes of startup. Installed Tomato(teddybear version). Got printing, QOS and NAS setup without too much trouble. The hardware is comparable to my older wrt-54GL. Signal/strength/coverage appears about the same, maybe a little better throughput. I give it 5 eggs on hardware performance and take away 3 for the rebate sabatage(below in Cons).
Cons: REBATE Sabatage. Don't buy it for the rebate. I usually send in rebates and have no problem. On this one thed the pre-register web page is flawed so you can't input the true date of your purchase. I bought this in October. Rebate is for 10/1-10/31. Dates available to enter the purchase date are only 10/25-10/31. Yes, I chose the right rebate on their site and Yes, I'm well within the 30 day post mark limit. I bought mine on October 13th. So while all my paperwork will indicate the 13th, my pre-register will indicate 10/25, which was the earliest available date on the web form. Now you tell me, if they will honor THAT then it will be a MIRACLE. Even though its all valid, subcontracted rebate companies thrive on finding inconsistencies in dates in MIR's. In this case its by design...THEIRS.... or at least by a poorly designed web submission form. ASUS, subcontract a decent rebate company.
Other Thoughts: I knew I was going to install Tomato anyway so it made the choice of entertaining the stock firmware easier. The stock software was all hung up on finding my ISP(Charter) DNS server. Never had this problem with any other router or any other firmware. I played with it a while(30 mins or so) and I'm sure I'd have figured out the "hold your head right" and it works but my patience played out and decided "it shouldn't be this hard". If I were a novice, I'd really be irritated. I did like the GUI of the stock firmware and it did have some really nice features. Yet, if you cant even get out of the gates with finding the ISP and the gateway and DNS and all that very basic stuff, your toast. Tomato found everything without a problem(like any other firmware in the world). Between the rebate and stock firmware issues, I knock this product back to 2 eggs.........which is a real shame.
