5 out of 5 eggsSolid Router

Pros: - Extremely stable with Tomato USB.
- Good coverage
- It just works

Cons: Didn't come with Tomato USB preloaded...

Other Thoughts: I've owned this router for almost two years and it's been nothing but reliable the entire time. Multiple computers, gaming systems, phones, Tivos and never a hiccup. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 eggsDDWRT Makes these SCREAM!

Pros: Fast, DD-WRT support

Cons: When using a bridge mode with DD-WRT, it takes a couple minutes for them to recognize one another sometimes.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for DD-WRT

Pros: This router is great for DD-WRT or other open source firmwares. The USB port is used for the print server on the stock firmware, of course with DD-WRT it can be used for storage and Open-WRT can use it with soundcard to become an Internet radio.

It is very difficult to brick this device. I interrupted firmware uploads multiple times and I was always able to recover using the ASUS utility.

With DD-WRT it's great as an access point, but probably the best feature is the ability to use it as a wireless gaming adapter. For $30 (after MIR) to be able to connect ANY device to my wireless network is a bargain.

Cons: MIR is a pain. I followed the directions exactly and I did receive my rebate as a pre-loaded Discover card, but they are still a pain.

Other Thoughts: There are a ton of fun projects that this device can be used for!

5 out of 5 eggsBest Router for DD-WRT

Pros: Reliable and very configurable after DD-WRT firmware. Have not had any problems with connectivity as wireless client router.

Cons: The initial flash has to be done with the recovery software or TFTP. It will not allow DD-WRT firmware using the web interface.

Other Thoughts: I use this as a wireless client and router all in one. DD-WRT is able to do this with one device (AP and Router).

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Internet Radio

Pros: I bought this router over a year ago and basically used it as a print server and AP...both worked great by the way. Then got bored with it and converted it as an internet radio. And that's where the fun begins! This little router can out perform most internet radios out there. You can control the radio with an iPhone app. Thinking of buying another one for the same reason.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: It's almost impossible to brick this thing!

3 out of 5 eggsOn second thought, Fail

Pros: In the brief time it worked, it was really fast

Cons: A short time after my favorite geek left it disconnected from my Cable DSL modem again. We couldn't get it to stay connected even after updating the firmware which seemed to work for a while. It's disappointing.

Other Thoughts: My geek friend says Newegg is REALLY good about replacing stuff that doesn't work so I'm going to RMA this for a replacement. He also said this could be a compatability issue with my modem. That would be bad news for Charter and ASUS. -2 eggs for getting my hopes up. Shame on you ASUS. I've never had this problem with my old Netgear, secure or not. My old WGR614 has always just connected without any hassle. I may not be a pro uber-geek but it seems to me that is how it should work. Plug it in, set up security, and go. If this replacement doesn't work I won't be buying any more ASUS products again... Fail...

4 out of 5 eggsWorked after firmware update.

Pros: It is amazingly fast. It doesn't take forever to start loading a page like my old Netgear.

Cons: I had to call a geek to update the firmware before the stupid thing would connect. If you have Charter as an internet provider you may want to try updating the firmware before you return this device. My geek took 5 hours trying to set this thing up between tech support calls back and fourth with ASUS and Charter before doing the update. After updating it we've had no trouble so far.

Other Thoughts: If you buy this update the firmware immediately out of the box. It will save you a few headaches. -1 egg for being a pain where I sit and making me have to call a geek. I love my new router but it should have been ready to go when it got here. Shame on you ASUS...

1 out of 5 eggsWireless router without the wireless

Pros: Price and compatibility with 3rd party firmware. Flashing TomatoUSB (Toastman version) was easy peasy.

Cons: Wireless connection does not work. I bought two of these routers and they BOTH had the same problem. The wireless connection intermittently turns on, quickly drops, and usually stays off. One has gone back to the store and the second is about to. The first reply I received from CS does not make me hopeful that this is anything other than bad hardware.

Other Thoughts: My wife and I have 2 smartphones and her laptop in the house. We want a wireless connection for these devices. Unfortunately, I need QOS to deal with Netflix, even on a 22Mbps cable connection. After looking for a suitable router, this one looked like a winner; unfortunately, it has so far been a waste of 3 evenings worth of troubleshooting and the hassle of returns. With so many good companies out there to buy video cards, motherboards, and network gear from, Asus products won't be on my future shopping lists.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Wireless Performance

Pros: Works as an overpriced wired only switch.

Cons: The wireless is horrible, even slower than the 802.11b router I own. The wireless speed maxes out at 70KB/s. Do yourself a favor and search this string on google: 'Asus WL-520GU slow wireless'.

Other Thoughts: How can a company as large as ASUS release a product with such a huge flaw?
