4 out of 5 eggsUpdate: 2 yr heavy usage, cap went bad

Pros: Great specs, awesome when DD-WRT installed.
Wireless capable of 300 Mbit.
After replacing bad cap, its back to running rock solid at 300 Mb.

Cons: After about 18 months, router exhibited odd behavior. Wireless would cut out while streaming HD vid, would lock up occasionally and require hard restart. Finally, it stopped turning on (would turn on, blink lights, then shut off).

Disassembled, found bulging 680uF cap. Removed & replaced, back up and running now, as good as new.

Other Thoughts: Disclaimer: I have an HD Homerun Prime, and this router very reliably streamed HD cable content (10-30 Mbit) over wireless for hours on end, for about 12 months. This may/may not be the extreme case of constant wireless usage intended for this router. If I have to replace the cap every 1.5 to 2 years, fine. The hardware specs are awesome enough and the fix relatively easy enough that I'm only knocking off 1 egg.

5 out of 5 eggsSet it and forget

Pros: There are a lot of pros for this starting with hardware and ending with Open Source, so I will stick to my own experience:
- Did a couple of updates, decided for Merlin firmware, set it and forget about, not even a need for reset.
- Mostly used for wireless: 2 desktops, 2 laptops, 2 tablets, 3 phones, wireless printer and one magic jack - all working nice, no issues in a 3br ranch home.
- Torrent client works acceptable for me.

Cons: - only 300Mbps - but I knew that when I bought it.
- a bit pricey nowadays
- wireless may not be enough for HD content
- after a power loss, MagicJack (ver.2) will not work, I need to unplug and plug it back once the router is up...
- powerful LED lights :)

Other Thoughts: I hate to spend time configuring and waiting to see if there are no issues, so once I decided that Merlin firmware has everything i need and it's stable, I set up the router and forget about it; not even a reset was needed and it is working flawlessly for a couple of months now.
I'm a bit worried about reviews stating that unit died after 2 years... time will tell!

1 out of 5 eggsOutside of warranty

Pros: Loved it when it was working.

Cons: The warranty is 2 years. My unit is 2 years and 4 months old. Came home from work and the wireless was down. Upon inspection I found that the router no longer had power. Tried switching the outlet and then the adapter sill no power. Hooked up a 10 year old D-Link and had no problems. ASUS tells me there is nothing they can do other than have me pay $77 for shipping and repair.

Other Thoughts: I'm a reasonable person and asked for a discount on a new router that I would purchase. I was told again that once the unit is out of warranty there is nothing that ASUS can do. I asked for a manager and was told that every manager was in a meeting.

1 out of 5 eggsDied just after warrenty expired

Pros: Worked great until it didn't.

Cons: Died

Other Thoughts: This was a really nice router until it died. I put DD-WRT on it from the beginning, and the router seemed to be made for it. I kept it cool and clean. Then, like those replicants in Blade Runner when they reached the end of their warranty, it just died.

2 out of 5 eggsFine while it lasted

Pros: Fast, can support open source firmware, and has good signal strength

Cons: 9 Days after the 2 year warranty is up, the router completely dies. Some stability issues that were usually solved with a reboot every few months.

Other Thoughts: There are certain parts of the interface that utterly annoy me... but it works great once you get it working.

5 out of 5 eggsdoes it all

Pros: Runs various open-source firmwares, gig-E ports, USB slots. Good value for money. Even has gig-E on the WAN port.

Cons: none really

Other Thoughts: I have this running Tomato/Shibby, it works a treat. DD-WRT worked well on it as well. Wireless is reliable. Would definitely buy it, or another Asus router again. Will probably upgrade to faster wireless next time around.

2 out of 5 eggsNew firware is a DISASTER

Pros: The router has all of the features I needed, including DDNS support, port forwarding, VPN support, Guest network and a host of other features.

Cons: Since the firmware upgrade literally EVERY SINGLE PART of the interface is now broken!

Want to change the admin password? You'll get an error that says "This port is reserved for Download Master". Why? No idea.

Want to add port forwards? You have to fill out the "basic configuration" FTP Server Port field even if what you are actually doing is adding a set of port forwards. If you don't fill out that field it will refuse to submit the form and say "Please enter a value between 1 and 65535". I should point out that it doesn't indicate what field that error is referring to and since I wasn't using the basic config it took a few tries to realize it wanted a value there. Once you fill that field in the interface will pop up a "Processing" layer with a handy percentage counting up toward 100%. And then after about 30 seconds... it will complete and have thrown away everything you entered. Can't add any port forwards. Oh and BTW - if you had port forwards before you upgraded the firmware - they're gone. Gone and you can't put them back.

Testing the ports using telnet confirms that the connections are refused by the router. Stunning.

What about DDNS? Well it still works although you can't tell from the interface because it will show as being "Off". If you turn it on there will be a field saying "Key in the name" .asuscomm.com (assuming you select asus.com as your ddns server). If you add your ddns name it will submit and the field will go back to saying "Key in the name". Despite that however, the DDNS function still works.

How about setting the time zone? Nope - that's on the admin/system page and gives you the same "This port is reserved for Download Master" error and refuses to submit the form.

Oh yeah - I have a warning saying that I should change the "Allow guest login" to off. I'm not using that and I don't know why it's on so I decide I'll do as the warning suggest and shut it off. I click on the button and it switches the status to "Off'. Then the layer appears saying "Processing", and after about 20 seconds it reloads the page and the "Allow guest login" status is back to "On".

This has broken my network setup, disabled my media server and my VPN and turned the router into nothing more than the kind of basic wireless router I could buy from China for $10

Other Thoughts: This was a solidly good product that has been rendered almost useless by the completely broken web interface. I literally cannot believe how broken this web interface is. I don't think I have ever seen any product that had clearly had so little QA done on it. How is it possible to have shipped a firmware where there are errors preventing the interface from working on basically every single page? Did anyone test any part of this at all?

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router

Pros: This is great router, does everything I need. Also allows to plug in a USB drive for network storage.

Even with all the features it is really still an easy to use router.

Cons: Not really a con as it was my fault, but just something interesting incase someone else has this issue.

The router stopped working. It appeared that it may have over heated because I left a bag on it. I looked inside, and there was a capacitor that appeared to be blown. I ordered a 2 dollar replacement, and replaced it, and now the router is working great.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: Setup is clear. One time and done. Reboot one time since purchase (many months). Replaced an older dlink and saw better reliability and performance.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Buying a second for parents.
