2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed in quality & support

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: * DD-WRT (open source friendly) & decent LAN (hard-wired) speeds... when it worked.

Cons: * This router was primarily used for LAN connections (because wifi was horrible) and that worked fine for over a year, but then quickly turned south in that I experienced frequent and what seemed to be random reboots that required a power cycle (even using LAN only, no Wifi.) After trying to resolve the issues myself I reached out for support at ASUS and was told my product is out of warranty. I verified with my Newegg invoice that I was IN warranty (by 2 months) and yet tech support refused to support this product stating that his system was reporting I'm out of warranty and can’t be helped without additional fees. I provided the invoice with purchase date and yet that changed nothing. Customer service then direct me to 'escalate' the case using a web-form and that someone will review the issue as long as I provide a copy of the invoice and time of purchase, which I did. After waiting over a month, I received NO reply... This router is worthless at this point and I went out and purchased a new NETGEAR router because of this horrible experience with ASUS.

* Received terrible wireless connection and range. As low as 2 MB and unstable as can be. Also, unable to use more than one Wifi device at the same time without the router freezing/crashing. With new NETGEAR (R7000) router the SAME wireless devices are connected at a constant 100MB plus speeds without the slightest issue.

Other Thoughts: * I wanted to continue using ASUS and it’s understandable that equipment needs upgraded at some point, but when comparing the NETGEAR R7000 Nighthawk Vs. ASUS RT-AC68U for that upgrade it was an easy choice based on this experience.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Dj,

Thank you for making an effort in posting this review and I understand that you have LAN and wireless issue on the router. I know how frustrating it is when you need help and support won't help out. I want to apologize for any inconvenience this issue have caused you. If you still have the router can you please try and do a hard reset then do not update the firmware yet. Check and observe both wireless and LAN connection. If these steps will not work I will create an RMA for the router. Just provide me with your full name, mailing address, phone number and the serial number of the router. If you want to discuss this matter further please email me at customerloyalty@asus.com and put case # N150313915 in the subject line for your reference.

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: I've had this router for 4 years so far and it's been rock solid, no hangups whatsoever.

Cons: Can't find any.

Other Thoughts: I can't say about the stock firmware, but I put Tomato USB on it as soon as it came in.

1 out of 5 eggsAverage router died

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: Ordinary router works ok.

Cons: Died 2.5 years from purchase, and it was only operated for 1.5 years, the other year it sat in a box. Replacing the capacitor actually didn't fix this one.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsRuns great on stock firmware, USB and GBit a plus

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: I never upgraded the firmware on this router as I had previously on RT-N10 and -N12 models. I bought the -N16 as my -N12 failed after about three years. I may have had the wifi signal up too high on the -N12. Anyway, the -N16 is stable, never loses connectivity, and never requires a reboot. I am only seeing about 200MBit speeds on when using Cat6 with a couple of other gigabit devices, but it's still faster than 100MBit. USB 2.0 is a plus as I have a hub and 2 external HDDs attached and shared across the network. This router has been seamless for me.

Cons: Don't expect to be able to get the FTP server to actually work on this router, at least not from outside of your network. That's a small con and really a feature that many users might not use anyway.

2 out of 5 eggsWorked great until it died a relative young death

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: Fast, reliable with good features and management UI.
Signal was good, nothing spectacular but no problems either.

Cons: It died at about the 2 and a half year mark. Reading other reviews it appears this is very common.

Other Thoughts: I know all products have a limited lifespan but 2.5 years is too short for an upper-end item. I think it was $125 when I bought it.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggscould be good...

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: it some what works..

Cons: I have had multiple issues with this router. Nothing past the normal internet functions appears to work. AiCloud, file share etc many attempts to log in to asus dns results in not found, The other problem is asking for a password or user name. I have tried every combination known to man it won't take it. Tech support is nonexistent email only, answer in 48 hours, we promise. Well try 8 days so far with no reply. I'm looking at the box and a RMA as maybe my only solution.

Other Thoughts: sad because I have dealt with asus since 02 motherboards, video cards you name it. Never had a problem of no support till now. Asus this is not acceptable customer support. If thats the best you can offer, on a product that by now should have all the bugs out it is time to start looking elsewhere.

2 out of 5 eggsBad Caps

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: Great router, Ran Tomato firmware, Good processor

Cons: As mentioned by another review, the large main capacitor is weak. Mine died in just over 2 years. You should be able to expect more then 2 years out of a router.

3 out of 5 eggsOh, how I wish...

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: Sleek design.

Very stable OSes, never needs a restart (dd-wrt, merlin).

Stock router firmware is based on OpenWRT and is available to hack on (which enabled the famous Merlin firmware to spawn). Big plus.

Cons: Poor range, wonky wireless speeds. I get low signal in the next door room. There's no physical interferance and there are only a handful of other wireless APs, all

I've attempted to use the stock firmware, DD-WRT, and Merlin - the ethernet components are fast and reliable but I've had nothing but headaches for the wireless. DD-WRT was a bit of a nightmare - wireless dropouts and general unreliability on the wireless front. Merlin is more improved but I feel like things aren't quite there. I get the right speeds on ethernet but not so on wireless despite my constant tinkering: I've kind of given up at this point to just have 'meh' wireless speeds because this device has been such a hassle. Because of this I would not buy again - is it a hardware issue? I have no idea but Merlin provides me with stable, 8Mbps downloads - far less that what it should be but I'm unable to get it any faster.

The router gets quite warm - might be worth putting it on a fan. I fully expect that capacitor to blow out in two years' time - I'll solder another on.

The interface for stock/merlin is sleek but disjointed. I sometimes have issues finding what I'm looking fo because the item I seek is tucked behind some oddly-laid out menus. Besides the occasional 'where the hell is this?', the interface is just fine.

All in all, my dissatisfaction stems from the wireless speeds that I seem to be unable to get up.

Other Thoughts: If you decide on getting this router, one may upgrade the power supply:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=77149

I didn't use the USB component as all I was looking for was a stable daily driver for networking.

Of the three OSes available (stock, DD-WRT, Merlin), I'd recommend Merlin. DD-WRT was really nice and I wish it worked better but for my minimal needs of just ethernet/wireless Merlin was more reliable.

If you decide to use DD-WRT, remember to use the 22000 based builds (as of this date's writing) - there are a lot of old, bad ones floating around the forums.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: bought this router December 2010. Been on continuous since then.
had small bugs to worked out.but after that no issues at all. ran it with tomato for a couple years no problems and recently switched to Merlin
.

Cons: ran too hot and not having air-conditioned house didn't help.
which caused the Wi-Fi to drop connection a lot.
Didn't know how hot it was running at that time. After switching to Merlin it tells you Chip temperature. with a fan running about 100° Fahrenheit ,without running about 140.

Other Thoughts: problems I figured out. Use small muffin fan and microwave bowl for a spacer and used that to cool the unit. Works great. the other major problem was figuring out that my modem was not set up as a gateway and so they fought for control, drove me crazy till I figured it out.
I now use this as a access point for my Asus RT-AC68U.
