5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router

Pros: I've purchased 10-15 of these routers and use them all the time. This is a great router especially when the firmware is flashed with tomato. Would highly recommend

Cons: no 5.4ghz

Other Thoughts: Overall this is a great router especially if you are willing to take the time to flash its firmware.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good...

Pros: It works just fine as a repeater bridge, good signal, replaceable antennas, runs DD-WRT v24 mega, has 2 USB ports to run network storage.

Cons: Feels light and kinda cheap, blue LED is very bright.

Other Thoughts: I wasn't home when the delivery guy got here and the gate was locked so he just dropped the box over my fence into my yard. No big deal, but since this is WA and it can rain at any moment here it seemed kinda dumb. Also, my dog loves to chew on things and if I had been any later getting home he probably would have chewed the box to shreds.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works fantastic. I did load dd-wrt firmware and very happy with the outcome. Stable stable stable. No dropouts. Good signal throughout my house.

Cons: No real cons. dd-wrt does however disable the wpa key leaving some wireless printers useless until you find a work around.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid this if you want a router to work longer than 1-2 years

Pros: It works well.. at first. Accepts tomato firmware. Average strength radio.

Cons: I've sold around 100 of these over the last year or so and about 15 have gone bad due to cheap caps. It's always the same thing, always the same cap. They use cheap 2000 hour caps on these. Why is a mystery, since they use higher quality ones on their motherboards. I'm guessing they just needed a place to use the cheap low quality capacitors.

3 out of 5 eggsShould have exchanged when I first noticed problems

Pros: Fast, easy to configure base firmware, sleek, able to install dd-wrt on this device if you choose, option to set up guest wireless network.

Cons: I really liked this router, but I think I got a lemon.

When I first purchased the device, in the first week my desktop PC lost network connectivity, yet the wireless still worked. I noticed that the LAN port my desktop was plugged into (port 1) had somehow been disabled. There was nowhere in the base firmware to manage ports. I was unable to disable or re-enable the port. I switched my ethernet cable to another port and the desktop came online instantly.

I power cycled the router, and the port came back up. I proceeded to upgrade to the latest firmware hoping that would remedy the issue. Later that same day the port disabled itself again. I switched over to port 2 for the next week. No problems, the router worked just fine, port 2 stayed up, while port 1 was still disabled.

I power cycled the router again, and moved my cable back to port 1, determined to contact NewEgg if it failed again. Port 1 never disabled itself again. However, three to four times in the year and a half since it was installed I've had to power cycle the router because it was no longer routing traffic. Lights were on, the network interface was accessible, everything looked fine, but none of our devices could access the internet. Each time after power cycling the router, the network came back up and worked like normal.

Suddenly today without warning the device just died. There were no power surges. Today was a stereotypical day. Checked power supply, it works fine. I've tried several things attempting to revive the router including a 30/30/30 reset, but nothing is bringing this thing back to life.

I wish I would have RMA'd this thing when I had the chance.

Other Thoughts: I like the USB ports on the back of the router, but accessing devices connected to the router did seem slow at times.

1 out of 5 eggsDied, lights out after about a year

Pros: fast processor
good price point
runs 3rd party firmware

Cons: died
first symptoms lights out but a power cycle would get it going for another day or two, then power cycle fix would not get it to light up and power on

Other Thoughts: this is a common failure mode reported on forums for years, lot of speculation around the wall wart but factual analysis says the wall wart power supply is not the problem

5 out of 5 eggsStill Chuggin along after 3.5 years

Pros: well I gotta say Asus not surprisingly has built a solid product, I have owned this since October 2010 and am a regular gamer and host monthly LAN's so this thing gets thrashed quite a bit, with multiple demanding clients at once and has yet to fail me! I moved away from Tomato and moved to the Merlin Firmware last year and it runs just incredibly well, rarely have to restart it! Great Job Asus! (and Asus you should send me a new AC68 just sayin :D)

Cons: it may be just an incorrect setting but I can't seem to get higher than 72Mbs on Wireless N. not sure why though...

4 out of 5 eggsManually check firmware version!!!

Pros: Great little router - rock solid performance. Asus does a good job at keeping firmware up to date, and releases source code for review. New features with every new firmware (ie. vpn client).

Cons: RED FLAG: checking the 'update firmware' from the web interface results in 'your firmware is up to date' even when it isn't!!! MANUALLY INSTALL FIRMWARE UPDATE NOW - or get owned by Chinanet IP addresses like I did.

Other Thoughts: NEWEGG - given the failure of this router to update firmware, I would strongly suggest instructions to update firmware manually be included - with a warning that the 'update' feature is broken. written big, bold and red.
