2 out of 5 eggsForget any rebates from ASUS

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: The wireless router works OK, Less signal strength than the Newgear it replaced.

Cons: Not as easy to install as advertised in ASUS's advertising. My biggest gripe is their advertised $20 rebate. The rebate is buried so ASUS hopes you will not find it. The rebate is in fact a AMEX gift card. After submitting the rebate, I was informed that it had been denied for lack of the proper invoice. I was to submit an invoice before the expiration date of the rebate, which had already expired. I submitted a copy of my Newegg invoice I received in an email with my rebate, My AUSU claim No. is 1670181618567111. This is the first product I that I have ever purchased of ASUS's, and the last. If their customer service is not any better than this, how great are their products. I finally found an email address for ASUS and submitted my complaint. They referred me to the rebate people so back to square one. If is was not for this issue, I might have rated the product hisher.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsUnstable

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: Look. Easy to install.

Cons: Unstable. I have to reboot it at least every week because all the sudden I loose WiFi internet connection. Tried to upgrade firmware, reset, 2 different computers. After using it more than 5 months I am ready to buy something else.

Other Thoughts: I would suggest Asus to add scheduled reboot feature in the future firmware release. I think it would be very useful and seamless to reboot it every couple of days in the middle of the night..

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Pawel,

3 out of 5 eggsOkay Performance; Disappointing Life

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: Worked acceptably well when it worked. Decent coverage in my two-story home. Good interface & feature set.

Cons: I purchased this routes in part due to the very positive experiences that I have had with ASUS motherboards. Unfortunately, those experiences do not carry over to this router.

During its life, the router required more frequent reboots than similar routers that I own or support. As several people have pointed out, the cheap capacitor in the power circuit blew in just under 3-years. With only a two-year warranty, I guess ASUS is treating this as a disposable device.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Darrell,

I want to thank you for posting this review and I understand that you have an issue with the router. On behalf of ASUS we apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused you but let me go ahead and further assist you. Are you able to turn on the router are the power lights blinking? have you tried restoring the router to factory settings to try to fix the issue?

2 out of 5 eggsWorked good for 1.5 Yrs

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: My old Robotics router died after 10+ years and technology was outdated. So, I got an ASUS RTN-16 because I like their motherboads and they use open source Linux. It picked up the hard drive formatted in Linux without question and I started using all of it's features immediately and without a hitch. After about a year, it started loosing connection to the TV Set and now it cannot even stay on for longer than 5 secs? Cheap Chinese made junk is now designed to fail shortly after warranty runs out! Now, I am out $90 because it sat in the box for a year before I installed it. So, warranty has run out on it and I am out the money!

Cons: It looses it's connection and then dies after a year or two.

Other Thoughts: If you want a long term router, be sure to look elsewhere!

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsSolid router during its lifespan

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: Custom firmware support, wide user base, lots of features for the price at the time, steady performer, above-average wireless range.

Cons: Wireless quality could be better. I get 3-4 bars at about 30-40 ft away with higher gain antennas too.

Like others, mine died also all of the sudden. Powers on for a few seconds then shuts off. It would seem like a capacitor borked itself like many others. This model won't live up to the legacy of the WRT54G but it was decent enough.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsDied too soon

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: Great appearance. Great coverage. Great features. Simple to set up and use.

Cons: Short life

Other Thoughts: This product comes from a company I have bought a lot of product from over the years. Very disappointed to find such a poor level of lifespan. I have had a Linksys for many years that is still performing beautifully.

1 out of 5 eggsASUS RT-N16

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: Looks great, Great features and user friendly. Great range. Easy to set up

Cons: Died. Went completely dead after what I consider to be too brief a lifetime. My Linksys still working strong. What is the problem with ASUS? Company has a great rep but this unit is just not up to par.

Other Thoughts: Too many reports of these units failing before time. Should have taken heed and bought elsewhere.

5 out of 5 eggsPretty Decent Router

This review is from: ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server

Pros: Widely supportted by open source router projects. Of note supportted by both OpenWRT and DebWRT. External antennas allow for more focused coverage, better antennas or potential to have antennas located away from router.

Cons: No support for 802.11a (no 5GHz radio). These are now an "older" generation of router, so very high speed Internet connections may be able to overwhelm these.
