5 out of 5 eggsHuge box, huge signal

Pros: Wow, pretty much did what a router should do. Which is great, but whats greater is the signal strength and the fact that the signal doesn't drop even at bigger ranges. Maybe this isn't news, maybe its not a big deal but it is to me. Can handle many downloads at once without crashing as well, and the user interface could be less friendly realistically.

Cons: Its pretty big, and its white. I'm sure i could go on to critique the UI somehow, but the fact that its easy to load custom firmware pretty much makes that point moot.

Other Thoughts: Upgrading from an old linksys WRTGS35 of some kind... so this review may be a bit skewed given the problems with linksys that i've had. Take something from 2002 and upgrade to something from 2012 and im sure you'd draw the same conclusions. its like, HD internet, man.

4 out of 5 eggsAsus makes routers too!?!

Pros: Fast, amazing processor and ram specs, Gigabit ports, MIMO, removable RP-SMP antennas, DD-WRT and Tomato supported.

Cons: Stock firmware is horrible. I'm not talking about the interface, which is a BIOS UEFI style, but the actual performance of it. IT IS SLOW!!! Plan on gowing third party like everyone else here.

Also, it tends to get toasty.

Other Thoughts: Range is lacking with stock antennas. Two upgraded 9-dbi antennas on the end antennas make this thing rock!

Also, mixed mode does not work well. The signal seems to always drop to 11Mbps. Stick with g or n only and it works great. One egg docked!

5 out of 5 eggsWorking Very Well

Pros: Has been working flawlessly for me after upgrading the firmware to "Tomato". A very capable router and with the correct firm ware is highly tweakable. 2+ months never a dropped connection, works well with an RT12 access point for super coverage.

Cons: To many bright blue LED, I want it to hang un-abtrusively on the wall but it is lite up pretty good. Is a larger size unit. Factory Firm ware is really limiting the capability of this router.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat router when it was working

Pros: Purchased this router on 9/2010 and it has been problem free.

Cons: It died 1 week ago all a sudden. The power light just keep blinking and it can't connect to the internet. I can't connect to the router's IP or ping it. Reset didn't help. Called ASUS support and gave them the serial number. It turns out it only has 1 year of warranty and I am out of luck. I expect a router in this price range would last longer than 15 month.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize that your RT-N16 stopped operating properly. Please note that the RT-N16 is covered by a 2 year warranty. Flashing power light indicates your router may be in rescue mode and will require firmware restoration. Please contact us at Networking_Support@asus.com for additional assistance.

Pros: It has been a reliable router and I have not had any problems with it since I set it up in my network.

5 out of 5 eggsGood, solid router

Pros: Fast and reliable. Can be loaded with tomato or dd-wrt if I want.

Cons: It's not free.

Other Thoughts: it's wireless reception and broadcast is good enough that I get a good connection anywhere in my apartment w/o attaching the antennas.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Tomatousb works like a charm on this router. Connected external 2TB HDD and USB printer, and both have been working from the get go.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: My printer is a multifunction printer, but only the printer aspect of it is usable because the router is acting as a print server. Not really a con or a problem with this router, I just though it might be helpful for others to know that a good wireless printer might be preferable.

2 out of 5 eggsASUS Router RT-N16 fancy time waster

Pros: Powerful for the money. That is about it.

Cons: (Do NOT use OEM FW 1.0.x)
upgraded to Firmware 3.0.3.84
- uPnP/DLNA traffic not carried.
- PPoE stopped after 4 days
- Print svr no longer works
- wont mount Ext HD, no media sharing as a result

Other Thoughts: This device had several problems, and very little that deserves merit.
I filed a complete support ticket.. it is now day 3 waiting for a response.
I am returning the item this evening.

Manufacturer Response:
