5 out of 5 eggstime tested

Pros: I've had this great little router for 3.5 years now and its still performing great. The wifi covers a 3,000 sqft house inside and outside without loosing bars. WPS sync button works great for quickly connecting wifi devices. The admin tools are comprehensive and adding users, port-forward, changing security, etc takes no time at all.

Cons: It gets hot but continuous use for over three years and hasn't burnt out yet.

Other Thoughts: despite its age i'd still recommend this product over new/expensive options for the average home or small family of hardcore gamers.

1 out of 5 eggsTurned Into a Paperweight

Pros: Looks nice

Cons: Poor reception, runs hot.

Other Thoughts: Very poor reception and died after 1.5 yr of light usage.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Hien N.,

We are sorry to hear your experience. We want to fix the performance issue that you are having with your WiFi right away. Please clarify, you've mentioned that the router runs hot? Possibly that is why your wireless connection got's affected because of router overheating. Is there any way for you to place the router in a more ventilated spot and place in a cool and dry area first to see if the problem still persists, we may also change the Power adjustment to avoid overheating.

Please use the following troubleshooting steps to adjust the power:

Step 1. Please access the router interface, to access it, please open a browser and type into your address bar and if it's asking "Authentication required" please key in your router log in.
Step 2. On the router interface, please look "Wireless" under "Advance Settings, " > click the Professional tab> please scroll down and look for "TX Power Adjustment" as default it's currently 100mW, please put it to 70/80mW, then click apply and reboot the router.

If the problem still persists, please email us back so we can proceed with the RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) to fix the router problem.

If this step will not work, please email me at and put case # N151187461 in the subject line for your reference.

Thank you for choosing ASUS.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointing to say the least.

Pros: Nice looking router with 2.4GHz and 5GHz capability, dual band is great. Very nice layout on the UI for setup and setting adjustments.

Cons: I've had this router for 7 months now and in that time I have seen a rapid decline in WiFi speeds, as well as single strength in the WiFi. I was able to be in my garage outside and have a solid 8gbps download with 1gbps upload. I now can't be 20 feet away in my bedroom and using WiFi on my cell phone without having constant drops and really sluggish speeds in the 4gbps download and .75gbps upload on my 65gpbs down and 5gbps up.. I am in the process of finding another router at the moment which is why I took a moment to update my past review.

Other Thoughts: Not recommended, probably going back to Netgear for my WiFi router.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I certainly understand your concern regarding the unstable internet connection. To isolate the issue, I would like to verify, in which frequency are you connected? Is it 2.4GHz or 5GHz? Are you having the same issue with other wireless devices? How is your wired connection? Did you try to update the firmware version or reset the router after upgrading the firmware version to see if that will help with the issue?

If you are experiencing an intermittent connection, please try to place the router to a different location. That's why you encountered the disconnection from the internet due to interference. Elevate your router away from floors. You'll get better reception if the router is on a desk, not on the floor. You should also pay attention to the kinds of materials the router and adapter is near. For example, placing the router on a metal desk or up against a metal wall will cause problems. Signals can travel through a wood desk easily, but metal will obstruct the signals. This is the examples appliances can cause wireless interference, including cordless phones, baby monitors, and microwave ovens.

If you are having problem with the unstable wireless connection, please use the following troubleshooting steps:
Step 1 - Please try changing the Channel bandwidth to boost the frequency of each band of 2.4 GHz to 20 MHz and control channel of 1, 6 or 11. For the Channel bandwidth to boost the frequency of 5GHz to 80 MHz or 60MHz and change the control channel to 165 or 161.
Step 2 - Adjust the placement of your router. Simply adjusting the placement and orientation of the wireless router may improve the 2.4GHz and 5GHz signal strength.

For further technical assistance or if you want to discuss this matter with me, please email me back at and put case # N151107452 in the subject line for your reference.

Thank you for choosing ASUS.

5 out of 5 eggs3+ years strong

Pros: Continuous good performance after heavy use.

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: For anyone having performance issues check your firmware! I had the same issue roughly a year and a half ago and all that was required was an update and off she flew again.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY!

Pros: The router looks nice
Has great wired and wireless speed (when working)
Easy to set up and get connected
Web interface is easy to navigate

Cons: Router requires constant restarts (appx. twice a day)

Other Thoughts: When I first was looking into buying a router I came across the RT-N56U, and thought that because it was made by ASUS it was probably well made. I was wrong! The router is junk! It requires a restart of the device at least twice a day. I am not the only person with this problem either. Plenty of other people have the same problem. Without waning all connected devices will suddenly be unable to connect to the internet. All of the lights on the router are on and operating as though it works fine. A dig through the web interface reveals nothing and tells you that everything is working fine. I cant even find anything in the system logs. This router is junk and I would not recommend it to anyone.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Jacob,

We want to thank you for taking the time to communicate to us why our ASUS products did not meet your expectations. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. I do understand that you're having an issue with the router. Can you please provide me with details of the issue, so I can help you. To isolate this case, have you tried to update the firmware version and do a factory reset to see if that will help with the issue? If not, can you please try to do it manually upgrading the firmware version.

First, download the latest version on this link:

Here's the steps for manually upgrading the firmware version:
1. Click "Global" to download.
2. Once it successfully downloaded, please extract the file.
3. Plug in the router to PC hardwired, please access the router interface using and key in your username & password for your router log in (as default the username and password is admin/admin).
3. On your router interface, please look "Administration" under Advance Settings and click the Firmware Upgrade tab.
4. Administration - Firmware Upgrade, please click "Choose File" (make sure that the file that you are going to uploading is the "Extract File") then click Upload.
5. Once it's completed, please hard reset the router to update the router settings. Make sure to create a new different Wireless Name/SSID for 2.4GHz and 5GHz to avoid wireless conflict. You can still provide the same password for your Wi-Fi.

If the problem still persists, please email us back so we can proceed with the RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) to fix the router problem. If this step will not work, please email me at and put case # N151036936 in the subject line for your reference.

Thank you for choosing ASUS.

4 out of 5 eggs4 Years of use, still going

Pros: So, after 4 years of use this little router is still going strong. The biggest Pro is that it's still working when I've never had the hardware of any other router last this long.

We have 3 wired connections and 6 wireless connections always on. Add in 2-6 wireless in and out every day and it handles all of them perfectly.

For those of you so inclined, this router ~IS~ Open-WRT compatible.

Cons: You MUST have the latest factory firmware for it to work properly. You can flash it yourself. But without the latest firmware it's a nightmare of dropped connections, bad 5Ghz signal and 2.4Ghz not channel hopping to avoid interference. Having to reset daily, etc. You can find the latest firmware on the Asus website.

The 5Ghz signal is exceptionally weak. 50ft line of sight if NO obstructions. Each wall takes 10 feet out.

5 out of 5 eggsLong Time Dependability

Pros: 1. Solid Quality - I've had this router since 2012 and it's performed admirably to this day without ever giving me the slightest issue.

2. Interface - Using the stock firmware is pretty simple. I don't have much need for anything too fancy feature wise, and all the basic network setup options like encryption and what not are located on the first page you login to on the router. Other options like port forwarding and what not are clearly labeled and located in obvious places

Cons: 1. Temperature - The router does run a little hot. I have plenty of space surrounding it however and the router has been kicking for 3 years without any issues

Pros: This was a great router, but now it keeps dropping the connection and have to reboot it constantly. I take it has two year warranty so I am hoping they honor it.

Cons: Worked well for a year and now drops connections

Manufacturer Response:
