* Maximum wireless signal rate derived from IEEE Standard 802.11g and draft 802.11n specifications. Actual data throughput will vary. Network conditions and environmental factors, including volume of network traffic, buildings materials and construction, and network overhead, lower actual data throughput rate. Environmental factors will adversely affect wireless signal range. Wireless range and speed rates are relative performance measurements based on the wireless range and speed rates of a standard Wireless G product. Maximum throughput based on draft 802.11n devices.

  • newegg Dual-Band Access Double your wireless performance and bandwidth with simultaneous 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands speed up to 300Mbps concurrently. While basic internet applications like browsing or file downloading can occur in 2.4GHz, wireless HD content streaming takes place in the super-fast 5GHz band at the same time, so both achieve optimized speeds and you enjoy smooth, buffer-free HD content streaming.
  • newegg Hardware NAT Equipped with a capable hardware NAT acceleration engine and built-in Gigabit Ethernet, it gives you full Gigabit internet performance, making its WAN to LAN throughput up to 2-5 times that of traditional software-based NAT Gigabit routers.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat and cheap alternative.

Pros: - Works well
- No slowdown on the LAN connection. As a matter of fact, it was a tad bit faster than my TP-Link Archer C9 in LAN connection.
- Sleek design

Cons: - Range lacking
- All connections to the right of the router...
- Flimsy stand

Other Thoughts: This is a great router for a small home/room setting. I got this for 20 dollars during the sale and it really cannot get any better for the price. I live in a 2 story house where my living room (router second floor, living room first floor across from the router) is hard to reach even for an expensive router. The range is as expected (at least from what I expected). It's not as great as some of the expensive routers out there, but it does the job relatively well. In the living room mentioned, it gets a little signal, but internet is still there. Definitely not the signal for streaming, however. This is something that my more expensive router can do.

I purchased this as a backup router should my current router fails in the future. For 20 bucks, I will think of it as an insurance... after all, my family cannot live without the wireless internet even for a day.

5 out of 5 eggsLow cost, not overkill 11ac given my ISP is 110/10Mbps

Pros: No dorky antennas. Works well without, in 1700 sq ft 2.
UI is very good.

Cons: Cables exit on right side. I'd prefer bottom.

Other Thoughts: Great example of avoiding poor return on investment of 11ac routers..
Samsung S6 phone maxes out ISP speed one room away from router.

4 out of 5 eggsLike others, lost 5GHz in a couple months

Pros: 2.4GHz band is carrying our whole house
Looks stylish

Cons: 5GHz band was weak, died in a couple months

Other Thoughts: As other reviewers reported, I lost the 5GHz band in a couple months. But the remaining band is servicing our household well enough. It services a laptop, 2 tablets, 2 phones and a Kindle. Usually not more than 2 devices in use at once. It's been in service for over 1 1/2 yrs.

1 out of 5 eggsA piece of garbage....Their customer support just as bad. Newegg Customer support came through 5 Eggs for NewEgg

Pros: New Egg CS Thanks so much for the help...they care about customers where Asus does not.

Cons: Never worked out of the box....

Other Thoughts: I have worked on computers since 1978 and the call with Asus Customer support has to one of the worst experiences I have had.

4 out of 5 eggsNight and Day

Pros: Snappy performance with Padavan firmware
Inexpensive dual-band router

Cons: Unbelievably bad stock firmware, even with current upgrades

Other Thoughts: I played around with this router and stock firmware, and was ready to send it back, but went ahead and tried Padavan - WOW! The difference was dramatic, I use a variety of iPhones, Androids, Dell and Lenovo laptops, iPads, and desktops, most of which use 2.4Ghz. I was using a Cisco E2000 router, and this one gives me much better download speeds in a two-story home, with ranges up to about 30 feet. I have only used this for a day, but strongly suggest using the Padavan firmware. There is a huge difference, not only in performance, but in the speed of moving through the administrative menus. So far, so good. I haven't used the other features yet, but am using this for my main wireless router. Speeds went from a variable 2 - 12 Mbps before the Padavan upgrade to a steady 45+ Mbps afterward, using a cable provider who promises 50 Mbps. My wireless download speeds are close to what I get coming off the wired ports. Also, the Padavan upgrade is simple, download the firmware, and upgrade easily through the admin menu. For the price, I can't imagine a better deal - only a Jackson after rebate. I would probably give this one star with the stock firmware, though, and five stars after the Padavan upgrade (so far, only used it for one day).

2 out of 5 eggsLasts

Pros: I've had this thing for years and it does have longevity as far as relevance and bios upgrades.

Cons: 5GHz doesn't shows way les signal strength at the same distance (20 feet) as the 2.5GHz. I have the latest bios on it and it still has the warning that there is a newer bios available. Also, I used to have my USB storage drive hooked up to it but the sharing was so bad I abandoned that. We couldn't get files to delete, or sometimes even see ones that were on there but.

Other Thoughts: If you are just using this in a small area and are not using the USB sharing it's ok, otherwise I would get a newer model.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Charles,

Thank you for your time on posting this review, we are sorry to hear your experience with the ASUS router. Please allow me to assist you.

Can we have a detailed information about the routers connection issue? and what are the steps that you have tried to try to fix the problem? Please try the following suggestions below to try to improve the connection.

* Place your router in an open and strategic area since this device uses radio waves to communicate.
* Do not place your wireless device or computer right next to the router because the 18-inch radius around the router is a wireless dead zone.
* Ensure that the distance between the router and the wireless device is three (3) meters apart as this is the area with the best signal strength.
* Test if you are having connectivity issues with your ISP, connect one (1) computer directly to the modem using an Ethernet cable and observe the connection for a few hours. If you're still getting connectivity problems, contact your ISP for technical support.
* To resolve wireless speed and strength issues, it is recommended to use WPA-Auto Personal.
* If you wish to attain optimal Wireless-N speeds set your wireless security to WPA2-Personal.
* If the issue still exists after performing the steps above, this could mean that the router needs a firmware upgrade. However, if the router is currently using the latest firmware version, you may perform a firmware re-flash/downgrade. The re-flash process lets you update your firmware with a similar version that you are currently using.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid all-around N router

Pros: -Solid dual-band wireless N performance
-Full-featured firmware
-Gigabit LAN ports

Cons: -Firmware UI is flashy but not the most intuitive to use
-USB storage and print functionality is finicky
-Unit design is awkward to work with and ugly
-Must be kept ventilated or tends to overheat

Other Thoughts: This is a very solid all-around dual-band N router with a lot of features at a good price. It's vertical design makes it a bit of a pain to cable manage and I personally think it's ugly but people don't tend to have routers be the focal point of a room anyway. The firmware also has a ton of great features but like most cheaper routers, its USB implementation is a bit of a pain to work with and while the UI looks very nice, it takes way too many clicks to get to the functions you need if you tend to adjust settings a lot.

Asus routers are also notorious for running hot so you have to make sure this unit has a bit of room to breathe or you'll greatly shorten its life span. If you can give it a bit of space though, it will do its job dutifully.

3 out of 5 eggsGood and not

Pros: Customization, features

Cons: 1st year worked fine, second year with the updates and everything DNS would keep failing and now it keeps asking me to upgrade firmware when it already has the latest one....

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Qassam,

Thank you for your time on posting this review, we are sorry to hear your experience with the ASUS router. Please allow me to assist you.

Can we have a detailed information about the issue? have you tried power cycling the router and do a hard reset just to try to fix the routers issue. Aside from the firmware update issue are you experiencing other problem with the router?

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router, Fast

Pros: - Very Fast, my old router was limiting my connection speed when I used Bittorrent.
- Very user friendly
- Interface is very snappy
- Dual channel is nice for avoiding interference.
- Options are pretty good.

Cons: - Some options (like parental controls) could be a bit more detailed (only lets you block one computer per rule and only at the granularity of 1 hour)). Not enough to remove an egg as I didn't buy it for those features, but it would have been nice.

Other Thoughts: Love the router

5 out of 5 eggsTiny - or should I say SLIM

Pros: Worked out of the box. This is about the 5th router I've had over the years. The prior one, for the amount of traffic I pumped thru it, needed to be rebooted about once a week. This one has run for several months without needing a reboot.

Cons: It's so light, that I have to be careful the cables don't pull it off the shelf I have it on (when I move cables around)

Other Thoughts: Works well. I recommend.
