5 out of 5 eggsUpgrade the Firmware!

Pros: Low cost, simple setup

Cons: comes with lousy firmware.

Other Thoughts: Right off the bat when you get this device you should update the firmware. The throughput is terrible with firmware in the 2. anything area. Once updated the throughput is MUCH better.

This router / AP / Repeater is very nice. The mode switch makes setup into a role a breeze. I use this as a extension of my network in a AP / wired switch role. This sits inside my entertainment system so i can hardwire all my devices and it acts as a wifi AP so i have great signal in my living room

1 out of 5 eggsThis router is trash.

Pros: Compatible with dd-wrt and Tomato.

Cons: Very poor Wifi performance (13 Mbps when in the same room).
It was a pain in the backside to install third party firmware compared to other routers from Linksys, Trendnet, and TP-Link.
Does not appear to be supported in OpenWRT.

Other Thoughts: I flashed two of these with dd-wrt. One was used as a router/access point; the second unit was used as a wireless bridge. The bridge unit died after a year. The AP unit never performed anywhere near as well as advertised. I installed Tomato, but Wifi performance did not improve.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Wayne,

Thank you for posting this review and for using one of our products. I want to apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused you. Let me go ahead and further assist you. If you are experiencing a intermittent connection, please try to place the router to a different location. That's why you encountered the disconnection from the internet due to interference. Elevate your router away from floors. You’ll get better reception if the router is on a desk, not on the floor. You should also pay attention to the kinds of materials the router and adapter is near. For example, placing the router on a metal desk or up against a metal wall will cause problems. Signals can travel through a wood desk easily, but metal will obstruct the signals. This is the examples appliances can cause wireless interference, including cordless phones, baby monitors, and microwave ovens.

If you want to discuss this matter further, please feel free to email me at and put case # N150769992 in the subject line for your reference.

I'm here to help you and all others with these issues, as our customer loyalty department dedicated to bringing a resolution to all issues related to our products.

Thank you for choosing ASUS.

Best regards,
ASUS Customer Loyalty

5 out of 5 eggsGood router, bad advertising

Pros: Very capable router with no bugs. Latest Asus firmware is pretty good. I just wanted a basic router with detachable antennas. I have a 6 dB antenna and a 14dB panel antenna with 2W amp connected to it. Five bars anywhere in my place and can get a signal around the block.

Cons: THIS ROUTER DOESN'T SUPPORT DD-WRT. You will most like receive revision D1 which doesn't support dd-wrt.

4 out of 5 eggsVery easy to set up

Pros: Does what it is developped for. Inexpensive. The whole setup process took 15 minutes (with DD-WRT installed). Has enough transmitting power for a small house.

Cons: Very old router (5+ years old design). Only 2.4 GHz range.

Other Thoughts: May be a perfect router for a non-demanding users.
The "restore" button pops up on the back - and it does what it should, unfortunately. I had to complete the setup again, with a long list of MAC-addresses filled for allowed users etc.

4 out of 5 eggsRefurbished?

Pros: Works as advertised. Flexible. Tempted to get another at this (refurbished) price.

Cons: Like other reviews saying the admin password was not default, mine had the original owners ISP email and password still there! The installed firmware was ancient. The power supply cord was simply "home wrapped" (Isn't a new power supply standard practice for a refurb?) . While I have had a perfect track record with ASUS factory refurbished products in the past, this felt just "used", not refurbished.

Other Thoughts: Upgrade the firmware immediately. It is easy, painless, and worthwhile. The new GUI is way better, and several significant issues are fixed.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat BUT...

Pros: ASUS

Cons: As others mentioned, the instructions are vague. My biggest gripe is minor. If you wall mount, the antennas point down and the wires connect from the top. The mounting holes will work with the antennas pointing up and the wires coming out from the "bottom", but it really wasn't set up to be installed that way. Also, the blue LED's are a little bright and I can see it in my peripheral view. But that's cosmetic and doesn't change my opinion.

Other Thoughts: Having 30+ years of networking experience, the FIRST thing I do when I purchase a refurb unit is to reset to factory defaults and immediately update to the latest firmware. Didn't and wouldn't use the Ethernet cable they supplied. Buy something with better boots and a higher CAT rating.

3 out of 5 eggsIt's OK

Pros: It works as an AP, Router or Repeater. I was able to set it up in repeater mode with the original firmware.
Looks nice a clean. Good antenna's and receives well.

Cons: It lacks clear instructions. After updating the firmware the menus and options changed. (Less options and unclear as to what you need to do, doesn't come close to matching the sheet of paper or Doc files) It requires you to connect it to the modem/WAN to set it up and I can't do that. Setup is a total pain and required a reset/restore each time I tried to get it working.

Other Thoughts: I need and bought this for it's "repeater" mode function. Initial setup from it's menu was easy then I updated the firmware and lost the connection and the menu option to set up the repeater station selection. I discovered that if I reset the device to factory defaults and powered up in repeater mode I could then select the router i needed to "repeat' and use. I had to use my laptop with a lan cable to the device and turn off my laptop wifi for this to work. Last thought - I would restore to the original firmware if i could or not update knowing what I know now.

5 out of 5 eggsWDS for $60....Sold

Pros: Price, size, DD-WRT flexibility, 32/8 memory

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I couldn't begin to tell you about the stock firmware on the RT-N12 because I've never used it beyond the initial reflash. Whether Asus knows it or not, they've produced the perfect DD-WRT capable device.

While I wouldn't necessarily recommend this unit to control a head end connection, I've used it in tandem with the RT-N16 for several WDS implementations.

4 out of 5 eggsRepeater

Pros: Bought as a repeater for a Belkin router. Could not get it to connect to the main router until I updated the firmware to latest. Working great now! Worked fine out of the box as a router.

Cons: Need to update firmware - better GUI too when that's done.
Install utility too for easier management instead of going right to the Quick Startup guide.
