4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Worked right when I plugged it in. I am running Windows 8 Pro 64-bit and it found wireless networks immediately.

I am on second floor of my house while my router is downstairs on the other side of the house and I am getting full signal.

Cons: The version I got is "B1" which is not specified here but it says so on the USB stick. I believe the wrong driver is included because when I installed it and the utility, the USB stick was not recognized anymore. I checked on ASUS website and they have separate drivers for the B1 version and the prior version does not support Windows 8.

Anyhow, all of these different drivers ended up breaking my device recognition and connection. I uninstalled the ASUS drivers and utility and Windows handled it just fine. I subtracted an egg because of the poor software but the device itself works great!

1 out of 5 eggsThere's a REASON these are REFURBISHED

Pros: Cheap, short range wireless.
Open-sourced driver support.
If your signal levels are HIGH, it may work OK

Cons: *Shoddy construction, guaranteed to fail.
*VERY poor driver/chipset programming: reports incorrect signal strength and data rates.
*Sudden death.

Other Thoughts: Upon inspection, both the units I purchased were missing the metal RF shields covering the wireless chipset, which is only about 2cm from the antennas. This is HORRIBLE design. The thru-holes are there for soldering on the shield, the manufacturer just decided to save a penny by not installing it.

The chip being bathed in radio noise from itself and everything else, multiplied by known driver problems, (Search for: 'Ralink driver problems ) make this a dubious purchase even at $10.

In my use of them, I did get one working as a short range wireless link, connecting a linux gadget to my network using the open source driver. It worked well so long as the wireless signal was very strong. When I tried pushing it with weaker signals, it couldn't cope well at all. Even worse, when I tried messing around with mounting one inside a cantenna for a longer range connection, not only was the connection unstable, but the card randomly died, being detected as an 'unknown USB device', then nothing.

I got my monies worth 'torturing' two of these devices to failure, but with the well documented problems Ralink chips have (which I ignored, turns out it *IS* that bad) you can't rely on these things, and should keep on shopping.

1 out of 5 eggsupdate and downgrade to my recent review of the N13 wireless adapter

Pros: Beginning to look like their might not be any "pros" for this "recertified" Asus N13 wireless adapter..

Cons: The Asus N13 wireless adapter has been in use about five hours now. Each time the computer is shut down and restarted the N13 adapter has a very hard time reconnecting to my Asus wireless router.
This new N13 adapter is now running so slow that it can't even load webpages. It starts up at 5Mps and gradually gets up to 13.5Mbps. Attempts to get online with it are failing as it times out.

Given enough patience it will eventually connect and will gradually increase its speed a little, but it is not what you'd expect from any 300Mbps rated adapter and definitely not what you'd expect from Asus.

Other Thoughts: I'm very disappointed. When I first got the new adapter working I thought "Okay, now its working like it should and posted a 2 or 3 star review of it. But it didn't keep working for even half an afternoon.

I'll be calling Newegg for a refund and will be cancelling an order for another one. The undependable performance of this N13 wireless adapter is inexplicable and unacceptable. My advice is not to buy it.

Sorry Asus. The first N13 I purchased several months ago was a good little adapter. This one is nothing like the original. What happened to Asus quality?

3 out of 5 eggsnot as good as my first N13 adapter

Pros: It sort of works. You can install it with the driver only and use windows networking to connect if you don't want to use the Asus Wireless Networking Utilities.

It's sort of compatible with my original N13 wireless adapter.

Cons: I have two Asus N13 wireless adapters and an Asus N band wireless router, all purchased from Newegg. Problems with this latest N13 adapter include the following:

1) The driver for my first N13 adapter, purchase about a year or less ago, does not work with this second N13 adapter. To get this one to work you must use a different driver. Fortunately, the right driver for this one is included on the setup CD, but you'd think that both N13 adapters would use the same driver. Go figure...

2) This second N13 wireless adapter seems slower than the original N13 wireless adapter, even when used on the same laptop within ten minutes of each other. The windows networking program now show the new N13 adapter is sometimes hitting its rated speeds of 300Mbps, but it definitely takes longer to load webpages than it takes with the original N13 adapter.

Also, when first installing the new N13 it showed speeds of only 13.5Mbps. After totally shutting down the computer and restarting it, somewhat higher speeds are shown. It took a while to get to the rated 300Mbps speed.

Other Thoughts: The price on this adapter dropped by 20% prior to its delivery to me.

Delivery took a full five days not counting the day of purchase. That's slow for Newegg. They used two shippers to deliver it. It would have gotten here much sooner if Newegg had used only the United States Postal Service to deliver the item.

Bottom line, this is still twice as good of a wireless adapter than the Cisco-Linksys wireless adapter that I also purchased from Newegg, but prior to discovering just how much better the Asus networking equipment is in my own personal experience based on the use of both products. Go Asus!

2 out of 5 eggscareful

Pros: Price, hi-perf wireless G

Cons: Forget about wireless N. WPS vulnerable router with no fix available, yet.

Other Thoughts: The only way to secure wireless operation is to turn it off. If you want secure wireless looks elsewhere.

1 out of 5 eggsETI COMPUTER COMPANY

Pros: IT'S ASUS!

Cons: IT DIDN'T WORK! IT RESPONDED IN MY VISTA NOTEBOOK, BUT NO SIGNAL. RE-INSTALLED IT, AND STILL THE SAME THING. INSTALL IT ON A CLIENTS COMPUTER NOTEBOOK(WIN-7)AND IT CAUSED HAVOC! THE DRIVERS WON'T EVEN UNINSTALL!!!! INSTALL IT IN MY DESKTOP(WIN-7), AND MY DESKTOP RECOGNIZED IT, INSTALLED THE DRIVERS, AND...............NOTHING! DID A DIAGNOSTIC THROUGH WIN-7 64BIT AND WINDOWS STATED THAT THE DRIVERS ARE INSTALLED, BUT THE DEVICE IS NOT FUNCTIONING!

Other Thoughts: ASUS YOU KNOW BETTER THAN TO PRODUCE JUNK LIKE THIS. YOU KNOW TO TEST EVERY PRODUCT YOU PUT OUT BECAUSE YOUR COMPANY NAME IS ON IT AND REPRESENTS IT. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN AN EASY DEVICE FOR YOU TO MANUFACTURE KNOWING YOUR COMPANY STATUS, BUT UNFORTUNATELY YOUR QUALITY HAS DROPPED DOWN TO THE DEVIL'S MEZZANINE THE PAST FEW YEARS.
