The RT-N53 dual-band router is from the award-winning Black Diamond series of ASUS routers. The dual-band connectivity enables both 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless transmissions. 5GHz makes content streaming incredibly smooth, which is especially useful when watching videos through Web sites like hulu or other high-definition media sites. 2.4GHz offers compatibility with most devices, and both transmissions can run simultaneously to deliver essential compatibility with performance. Featuring an exclusive built-in 2 internal antenna, the RT-N53 features Ai Radar, for omnidirectional circular coverage as opposed to a limiting horizontal signal for optimal connectivity wherever the router is placed, especially useful for multi-level houses or buildings.

With multi user support up to five SSIDs, connect up to four wireless networks on 2.4GHz and one wireless network on 5GHz. Customize each user's bandwidth and access privileges for each network. The RT-N53 router also features robust parental controls for you to set time and Web site access for each SSID. Product setup is CD free and quick. The Graphical User Interface (GUI) to customize settings is intuitive for users at any level. Boasting a standalone wall-mountable design, the RT-N53 router has a unique lattice glossy style that suits any room or office with a modern appeal.

  • newegg Dual-band for Lag-free Entertainment The RT-N53 doubles your wireless performance and bandwidth with simultaneous 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, with speeds up to 300Mbps concurrently. While basic internet applications like browsing or file downloading can occur in 2.4GHz, wireless HD content streaming takes place in the 5GHz band at the same time, so both achieve optimized speeds and you get to enjoy smooth, buffer-free HD content streaming.
  • newegg 4-Network-in-1: Provide Extra Networks The RT-N53 can provide 4 wireless networks over the 2.4GHz band, which provides separated connection priorities and access rights. For example, High priority and both network (private and Internet) access are perfect for managers, while middle priority and private network work great for staff, and low priority and internet access only for friends and guests. Protect computers from unauthorized access, hacking and virus attacks.
  • newegg Plug-n-surf and Hassle-free Management ASUS QIS and EZ UI offer you an intuitive router setup without reading manuals. Open your browser, then the QIS wizard will guide you to quickly connect to the Internet, regardless of what OS you use. The intuitive user interface provides a graphical network map, making wireless setup, QoS and client management clear and simple.
  • newegg Universal Repeater - Extend Your Signal in the Simplest Way With ASUS Universal repeater support, you can use the RT-N53 way to repeat your wireless signal to far away locations from the central access point. Scan for the Wi-Fi signal and link to the SSID you want to repeat. *Please take note that all repeaters, including this Universal Wireless Repeater mode, will sacrifice half of the bandwidth available from the primary router for clients wirelessly connected to the repeater. Currently, the RT-N53 only supports the 2.4GHz repeater setting.
  • newegg Parental Control The RT-N53 features URL filters and Time of Day rules allowing you to track your kids’ activities online and offline and control your kids’ computer time.
  • newegg Clever Wall-mount Design Mount the RT-N53 to the wall to save space and reduce cable clutter.

1 out of 5 eggsThis router has worse signal than a 5 year old router

Pros: It looks sleek and nice

Cons: Bought this router for its dual band signals but none of my 5Ghz device will pick up this router unless it's right in front of it. If I do as much as walk away more than 5ft or face a different direction. The wireless signal for 5Ghz would drop dramatically. Worse router I have ever bought.
2.4Ghz signal is not even that great. Has it moments when it drops signals. Probably 2-3 times a week.

Other Thoughts: Would not buy again.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsAlways Something Unusable for Sale

Pros: Slim, good looking, easy web interface to set up

Cons: Awful for VOIP even with Qos. Speed no better than cheap Netgear. Range even worse than N300 Wimax. Died at 2 months.

Other Thoughts: Had a Netgear wimax N300 yet wanted something with Qos so could prioritize wireless VOIP. STUPIDLY went with Asus. Web interface easy, setup a breeze. Speed no better than my Netgear on n (no 5gHz to test) and range notably worse. The signal for VOIP couldn't make it 50 feet without breaking up or causing echos on phone calls. I tried everything with firmware upgrades and Qos changes to make this thing work. Perhaps it's an acceptable modem, but for stuff like wireless VOIP (and prob media), it's a dog. Final straw: At 2 months, simply moved it to a different spot to try to improve signal in my condo. Plugged back in, power on but otherwise dead. I took my old Netgear 300N and plugged it into the very cables that did nothing for the ASUS, and got better VOIP and same wireless speed. Cannot recommend for VOIP or condo use. No response from ASUS on "2 year warranty". Junk.

2 out of 5 eggsPrevious Asus Fan

Pros: Dual Band, Got it on Sale. Easy starup

Cons: -Slow firmware.
-Connection drop outs

-no 5ghz on DD-WRT

Other Thoughts: Every 2 days im having connection problems with the router. My devices (TV,laptops, phone) suddenly be drop out and even though my devices able to see the wifi connection, it can't connect to it. need to reboot to it to do so, which takes time unlike other routers i had. the logs are also gone so i don't know where to look. Tried DD-WRT but the 5Ghz is missing. I was a huge fan of asus and been promoting it to other friends but now i won't do it anymore..

Hey ASUS, please fix this so that i wouldn't have regret buying this. or just atleast give support to DD-WRT on how to enable the 5Ghz.

1 out of 5 eggsBad router is bad

Pros: It looks nice has decent signal strength and is dual band.

Cons: It would repeatedly drop internet access for long lengths of time even though internet access on modem was working.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great features, easy setup small size with good range

Cons: Disconnects under heavy upload. Logmein file uploads, NAS bitorrent uploads makes the radio stop functioning. Firmware is junk and no tomato firmware or asus firmware to fix. I have to reset my router everyday multiple times.

Other Thoughts: I own an IT business and you logmein pro for large file transfers and this router crashes CONSTANTLY. Known issue on the internet and yet Asus will not fix this, they're clearancing them out now because of the complaints. If you just download, you should be fine. If you upload and download heavily, AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the difficulties you have experienced while using this router. Please note we will have a major update to the firmware soon. Please check our service site in the near future. Also, DD-WRT firmware is available now. We stand behind the quality of our products. If you ever have issues with our products, please do not hesitate to contact us for assistance.

3 out of 5 eggsThere are better options

Pros: It looks nice.

Cons: 5GHz band nearly unusable.
ASUS stock firmware not so great
Repeater function does not work

Other Thoughts: It does not support dd-wrt. The stock firmware seems to have some bugs, upgraded to the .40 firmware and it still does not function as a repeater. I would have RMA'ed it, but already sent off for the rebate, I will probably just give it away to a friend.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the difficulties you have experienced while using The RT-N53. Please note that DD-WRT support is now available. We will also be releasing updated firmware in the near future that fixes repeater issues. We stand behind the quality of our products. 5 out of 5 eggsRT-N53

Pros: Works as advertised. Fast, cheap and so far works great. Unit was received with f/w .28, it is working fine so I will not (down)upgrade it to .40. Only using 2.4 band set to 40mhz (300mbs) so I can't comment on 5Ghz operation. Its been running for 3 weeks without any issue (no resets or reboots req). Range is good, 60' no problem. I get the internet speeds advertised by my provider (10-15mbs).
For those that worry about the 100mbs ports slowing them down, don't worry, all of the ports on the RT53 are "auto sensing". I run the RT router into a GB switch that acts as a GB "backbone" for the rest of my network, works great.
Video streaming (netflix etc) not even an issue, unless your video source is crippled delivering content across the internet at a fast enough rate.
If this unit keeps operating like this, its a great deal.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Hope I get the rebate!

5 out of 5 eggsWorking great for me

Pros: I have bought 3 of these to run in different buildings and they have been working great. I am ordering a 4th one right now. They are easy to setup/configure. They are also nice and small. I like being able to setup a separate SSID for the 5ghz band. I have had some slight trouble on of them with the 5ghz SSID going out once and while but the regular band is still fine. A quick reboot clears that. I have not really spent any time trying to figure out why this is happening.

Cons: None really for me.

Other Thoughts: I think these are a good value and have good range for where I am using them.

2 out of 5 eggsTerrible Firmware

Pros: Speeds are faster than my old WRT54 with tomato and the connection quality is much better as well, same for range.

Cons: Terrible Firmware!
After updating to the .40 version of the firmware i tried to just set security on the router. After each change the router much disconnect all users and then you wait for it to reestablish. The only problem with it is that often times it will never come back and the router will have a constant blinking powed LED. The only way to get it back up is to hard reset it.

Calling technical support was of no help as well with their best advice to be make an RMA which you have to pay shipping to them which may not even fix the problem. The technician advised me to download the old firmware from the website but he didnt even realize that you cant do that. Asking to speak to someone higher he responded that there was no one else there.

Other Thoughts: I usually have no problems at all with ASUS products. I had mobo's and ROM drives from them that worked absolutely great and the router would be great too if they fixed the firmware. It more like playing russian roulette every time you change a setting. Once you get the bullet you lose all your settings once you hard reset it and must start all over the game of chance.

Once the firmware does get better or a get a reasonable resolution to this problem i will gladly give it 5 eggs and recommend the product.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the difficulties you experienced while setting up this router. Please note a new firmware update will be available soon. For now, We would advise using the firmware restoration utility, as your instability may be due to a bad flash of the firmware. If you need further assistance or have questions or comments, please feel free to contact us.
