5 out of 5 eggsAwesome.

Pros: As most reviews said, install is cake. UI isn't bad at all. Don't recommend the ASUS firmware (stock or updated).
Had some connection issues at first, but named the bands differently and put the latest Merlin firmware on it, and it's now the most stable router I've ever used.
No drops, no lag, no resets. Flashing Merlin or any firmware couldn't be easier, nothing close to the runaround some other, older routers were.
Antennas and stand are great for setup in odd or tight areas, good for directing signal if you don't have it in the center of the house.

Cons: Stock firmware is junk, takes some tweaking beyond low-level tech ability.

1 out of 5 eggsStop Working after 2 Months

Pros: Easy set up and fast connection, until it suddenly stopped working.

Cons: Suddenly stopped working. ASUS tech support said it was a malfunctioning unit. Have to send back for repair and be without wireless for 5-7 days.

Called this online company where I bought the router for assistance, but since it is more than 30 days since it was order (a little over 60 days), I was out of luck. They couldn't help. I needed to contact ASUS for return. I wish I would have bought the unit locally. That is where I am going to have to do so I can have wireless, then will have 2 routers.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router

Pros: dual band, range, speed, USB, guest login

Cons: non-really, do wish USB ports where 3.0 instead of 2.0.

Other Thoughts: Only use as AP, as Verizon MI424WR is my primary. Previously had Linksys WRT54G as AP. From where router is set (bedroom) to front door 25 feet hardly no range due to concrete walls with constant disconnects. With RT-N66U I get fair range with no disconnects on both bands. I have no reception in front of building, but get about 200-250 ft in the rear with 2.4GHz.

1 out of 5 eggsGot a dud!

Pros: Worked great - when it worked. More features than you can shake a stick at.

Cons: After just 3 days it started dropping the WAN connection. Tested this by plugging a PC and a cheap rosewill RNX 300 router to the cable modem. Worked great in both instances. Then plugged ASUS back in and rebooted everything. Still no connect after an hour of repeatedly trying. Then It became really slow and unresponsive just trying to get into the router setup. Even plugged in with a gigabit wired connection. So already having problems less than a week in is totally unacceptable. Boxed it back up and it is going back for a refund.

Other Thoughts: It appears that these are hit or miss, out of the gate, but it appears from reviews of long term owners, that they have long term reliability issues with diminishing signal strength, connection timeouts, and more and more frequent reboots. Sorry ASUS I gave you a try, but your product needs to just work, first and foremost, then worry about the bells and whistles and gee whiz features.

Was really no point calling tech support as it worked well for three days, and I really don't want to spend many hours trying to get the thing to work (likely fruitlessly). On top of that, all of the reviews pointing out longer term reliability issues have encouraged me to just get a refund while I still can.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Router I've used so far

Pros: Ridiculously easy to set up. I was up and running in less than 5 mins. The router UI is intuitive enough, but all the default settings are perfect for a casual user. just plug in and forget its there. the Wireless range is ridiculous. I live in a 1700 sq.ft house, and both 2.4 and 5 GHz bands have excellent signals throughout the house, even in the backyard.

Cons: Not a big fan of the way it sits upright, but its a silly design preference.

1 out of 5 eggstrouble

Pros: Looks nice. Lots of chatter about it in forums.

Cons: Lots of chatter in forums, as in people looking for help.

Other Thoughts: This was trouble from the start. Figured it was just the unit I received until I did a little searching online, found many people with exactly the same issues. The GUI was horrendous, buggy and down-right unfriendly. The VPN configuration was complicated and didn't seem to work (though there was so many other issues just trying to configure the router I'm not sure all the settings were ever completely applied).

This unit was to be configured on a static IP for a business that needed multi-user VPN support, replacing the "cheap" Netis router (that replaced a Linksys that died) that did everything needed except multiple consecutive VPN connections. I love going to a job and having new equipment be problematic to the point of unusable.

Lots of love/hate relationships with the router from other peoples reviews. I'll be on the "hate" side.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor range and connection

Pros: Looks great and very small

Cons: This thing had troubles from the beginning. First, it dropped connection every 5 minutes. Then, once it finally stabilized and everything was working, we realized the range is somewhere along the lines of 30 feet. Absolutely ridiculous. I can't get a stable/strong WiFi connection from my room. It's unfortunate, but maybe it is just the router that I got because many say this thing is awesome. Just not the case for myself.

2 out of 5 eggsCompletely Unexpected

Pros: This router looks awesome and it's really small, so it can fit almost anywhere.

Cons: Absolutely horrid range. My old router, which is something like 6 years old or more, has better range and does not drop connectivity the way this router does. I bought this router in hopes of a faster connection and equivalent or better range, but it has been far from that. My room is seperated from the router by 2 walls, and I get 1 bar of WiFi, if I'm lucky. Definitely sending this back, as it's range is nothing like it should be and the dropped internet connection hasn't been very appealing either

3 out of 5 eggsHave to reboot it every few days

Pros: I like the traffic manager, and the UI in general is fairly well layed out.

Cons: I'm growing tired of having to reboot this router every few days because the connections start to lag severely. This is happening sometimes just wireless and sometimes just wired connections. For example, I have a monitor next to my desk that displays several CCTV cameras 24x7. About once a week I'll notice the cameras are rendering about 1fps instead of the default 20fps. So I reboot the router and everything is back to normal. Similarly, with wireless I use Synergy to control multiple computers via a single keyboard and mouse. Several times now I have seen the mouse responsiveness on remote Synergy computers (located within 10 feet of the router via 5GHz) suddenly get very sluggish, to the point it's unusable. But once again, I reboot the router and immediately all is well again. This is one of the few times that I regret paying a premium for a 'great' device because it had such raving reviews only to find out it's really not that great at all.

1 out of 5 eggsFrom Bad to worse

Pros: If you are lucky enough to get a working unit- they work well

Cons: Extreme heat buildup, inconistent quality, no real warranty. 2.4 Ghz WiFi failure.

Other Thoughts: I previoulsy gave a three egg review, bcause I had two of these and one worked. My second unit was working poorly. Now the 2.4 GHz WiFi transmitter in it has completely failed. What makes this situation particularly bad is that their customer service will not warranty it. I bought the unit through NewEgg, but ASUS still considers it to be a refurb and says it was only covered for 3 months. I first reported this problem to them well before it was three months old, they failed to resolve the problem, and then left me hanging. Then when I posted a review mentioning their quality issses, they left a reply asking me to contact them and they would help me. I did, only to then have to waste more of my time going back and forth answering all their questions again. FInally, they said if I wanted to pay them money they would fix the router for me. They give a rediculously short warranty peroid, then delay you while you are under it, it expires, then the they offer to help, then waste more of your time, then tell you you can pay them some more money. It's a shame, I really liked my first RT-N66U, and it is still working great. However, their inconsitent quality and absent customer service is driving me to their competition.

Manufacturer Response:
