1 out of 5 eggsTwo defective units DON'T BUY

This review is from: ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router, DD-WRT Open Source support, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: None. Bought one and it was defective. Submitted an RMA and received a replacement. That one is defective also.

Cons: two defective units received.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid router

This review is from: ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router, DD-WRT Open Source support, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Has all the features you would need for a home router. Good speed, acceptable range on 2.4Ghz, somewhat below expectation for 5Ghz.

Cons: Not convinced "Beam forming" is actually effective at extending range or signal strength.

Other Thoughts: Expect this price range for any similarly featured router. ASUS is a trusted brand name but not the only one on the market.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks for cell phone tethering.

This review is from: ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router, DD-WRT Open Source support, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: I primarily bought this router as a gift for someone to use for cell phone tethering.

I connected my Samsung Galaxy S5 to one of the router's USB ports, enabled tethering on the phone (official, not third party), and let the router's ISP auto detect do the rest. A minute or so later the router was connected to the internet and downloading firmware. It also charges the phone while it is connected which is a big plus.

It also has a lot of USB related features and I full intend to take advantage of the media server capabilities.

Cons: Honestly I haven't had it long enough to find any. I will update the review if the person I give it to has any issues.

Other Thoughts: I would not say that I would want to replace a traditional ISP with a tethered cell phone, but I did test out some streaming sites and the connection was good enough to watch standard def.

3 out of 5 eggs9 months and started failing

This review is from: ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router, DD-WRT Open Source support, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Easy setup right out of the box. Time controls on the guest network that could be used for children. Option to prevent devices on the guest network from accessing information on the main network. Gigabit connection was great with network storage.

Cons: The plug and antenna design could have been done differently. If you want to use it on a flat surface the cords will be sticking into the air. Started to fail after 9 months. Seems to be a common problem for this router.

Other Thoughts: Asus was very quick to issue an RMA for this unit. A total of 5 e-mails between tech support and myself and an RMA was issued. As long as it comes back in working condition I will keep it at 3 eggs, I like the router, just luck of the draw that it failed.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Sean,

5 out of 5 eggsAbove the Avg tech level

This review is from: ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router, DD-WRT Open Source support, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: I've owned this router for mor than a year now and still amazes me on how fast and seamless it makes my network becomes with it.

Lots of advance options thats need some fiddling to get working and patience. the GUI for the admin page lays it all out but some parts arent as intuitive or simple as a linksys router.

Maintains radio output very well and range goes a bit beyond my 1000 sq apt.

Open source DD-WRT option is a plus but havent had the need to implement it

Cons: Cons:

Unit heats up and gets pretty warm so its well off in an open environment.

Settings can be finicky to save as it doesnt tell you why the settings dont stick (aka formatting or how its suppose to be input it on the GUI layout)

Other Thoughts: Only wished I had more opportunities to use all of the routers features and functions but only using as a gateway and firewall for my modem.

5 out of 5 eggsVery good design

This review is from: ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router, DD-WRT Open Source support, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: 2nd and 3rd party firmware available
More than enough processing power, ram and rom in design.
Good signal strength
Upgradable External antennas.
USB ports for Print server, file server, and other uses.
More than enough Wifi bandwidth for my use.
Solid design from a reliable company

Cons: Ethernet Jacks may have issues with some low-quality plugs. Get new cables or learn to crimp your own ends. (Considering that the later is needed for long runs, I highly recommend it.)

It only selects signal autodetect from channels 1, 6 and 11 in the US. This is industry standard, but it doesn't make it a good idea.
It works exceptionally well until there are over 6-9 high-strength networks in the area, so 1, 6 and 11 should be first choice until that level of spectrum density is reached.

Other Thoughts: If you need more bandwidth you should probably consider the model with 802.11ac support. However, for standard gaming and video streaming of two users, this seems to be a good fit for me.

Additionally, you may want to consider forcing devices to use the 5G band. A lot of them only read signal level, not signal to noise and don't realize that if there are tons of other 2G band networks in your area, 5G band will provide more reliable signals.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it!

This review is from: ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router, DD-WRT Open Source support, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: STABLE, Fast, Simple to setup.

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: My first router ever was junk and had to be rebooted constantly. I replaced it with a Buffalo Airstation, which was awesome, and never had to be rebooted. I was really reluctant to replace it, but after several years, our house grew to 3 PC's, 3 phones, a laptop, a tablet, a PS4, and a PS3. The old Buffalo was stable, but couldn't quite keep up. The new Asus has been super stable, and super fast. The gaming PC downloads steam games in 1/4 the time, and it doesn't interfere with regular PC use on the other band. I love this thing, and would recommend it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router

This review is from: ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router, DD-WRT Open Source support, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Solid connectivity to all wireless devices, including SMART TVs, Xbox, Android and iPhones.
Outstanding feature set
Runs cool
Very stable, never loses connections
Supports wireless streaming HD video very well
3rd party firmware availability

Cons: Cannot block wireless administrative access.

Other Thoughts: This is a quality wireless router and I am very pleased with its performance. I've owned one for over a year, just wish the priced had dropped to this low when I bought mine.

1 out of 5 eggsBad ports - Loose

This review is from: ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router, DD-WRT Open Source support, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Great reviews, and compatible with 3rd party firmware

Cons: Ports are improperly designed. RJ45 jacks do not hold network cable ends tightly, so the link is constantly dropping. I have to wiggle the cables every day to correct network links.

Other Thoughts: I contacted ASUS about this, sent in with RMA, and they returned the same router without any fix. Infuriating. No more, ASUS. You're dead to me.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Jaz,

In behalf of ASUS I want to thank you for using our product and for posting this review. I want to apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused you.
