3 out of 5 eggsWorks well, when it works

Pros: The unit looks very nice, comes with detachable antennas (so you can connect different ones, if desired), the admin UI is good and the auto-firmware-check seems to work properly.

Cons: The power connector is insanely small and fragile. The connection part is just a little bigger than a push-pin point. I really have to wonder who thought this tiny connector was okay for consumer-grade devices??

The middle antenna is too close to the WAN Ethernet port, causing antenna positioning problems.

This router is very temperamental. After the router was first plugged into power and the cable-modem performed the auto-firmware-update the admin UI suddenly became unavailable and the wired Ethernet ports stopped working, although wireless continued to work properly. I performed a factory reset and set everything back up the way I wanted, and after adjusting the QoS settings (again) the same thing happened. Did a factory reset again and didn't touch the QoS settings and the router seems to be hanging in there now.

The reports by others of the router running hot is definitely true with my unit. It doesn't burn to the touch, but I'm concerned that this router will start acting up or will die when summer rolls around. I imagine I'll need to find a small fan to strap to this.

Overall, I feel like the designers of this router had a good 'concept' in mind, but the execution of that concept is worryingly unstable.

Other Thoughts: We purchased this Asus router to replace a dying LinkSys unit from 2007. I went by reviews from both Newegg as well as another very large vendor's website. I did see the "DOA" and "died after a few weeks" reviews, but compared to other brands this Asus unit didn't seem to be any worse.

I've used Asus motherboards and video cards for quite a long time, both for myself and customers, and usually Asus comes through, but this router has given me reason to worry...just how long will this thing last? Will it give out right after my warranty expires? (sigh)

The router is functioning properly at the moment, but I feel that it's borderline defective due to the unstable / unpredictable behavior it has displayed when adjusting something as simple as QoS in the admin UI.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointing...

Pros: Easy to set up, works well when it works.

Cons: Drops connection almost daily(Sometimes 2 or 3 times in a day). No moving anywhere in the house, it will work one second, stop working the next, and require either multiple connection attempts or a complete reboot to reconnect.

Also not giving any better of a signal strength than the 'no antenna' model I was using previously.

Other Thoughts: I have been trying to make this work, and I am still having the same issues. I see other people who have issues with machines dropping and having to be reconnected over and over. I thought Asus was a name I could trust, that may be my biggest mistake as far as home computing equipment and limited budget are concerned.

I will probably try a 3rd party firmware to see if that helps, and then warranty the device, since it says it has a 2 year warranty.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router

Pros: I was dreading setting it up because that's the last thing I want to do after coming home from an IT job, but it was actually fairly painless. I was replacing an old Netgear that my roommate bought no less than 10 years ago and was on its way out. Significantly increased the speed on both 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands as well as the wired connection (next to the router and wired went from around 30Mbps to closer to 55Mbps. A little slower on the wireless). Signal strength increased an incredible amount. DD-WRT open source is always nice, but I haven't gotten around to flashing it yet.

Cons: LEDs are a little dim. Most people would consider this a plus, but I actually liked that my old router lit up my living room at night. It made walking around the house at night much easier

4 out of 5 eggsGreat router

Pros: Easy to setup and configure. Firmware is an officially supported ASUS version of DDWRT. Has enough built-in support in the interface to cover the large majority of use cases. Strong signals.

Cons: The interface is ugly and clunky feeling. Like a late 90's early 2000's feel. Also a bit unorganized if you compare it directly to the DDWRT interface. Does not have as many options as DDWRT even though it is built on that firmware which I found slightly disappointing.

Other Thoughts: Outside of the minor interface issues, this router is nothing but "Win". Update to latest firmware before you do anything with this router.

1 out of 5 eggsAsus tries to cheat from paying rebate

Pros: Product is fine...But this company (Asus) and also this vendor (Newegg) conspire to make rebates so difficult so as to be almost useless.

Cons: After jumping thru numerous hoops you wait weeks to get denied for crazy reasons. It borders on advertising dishonesty as if a rebate would be a simple matter rather than a royal PITA which they count on so there are a limited number of actual rebates payed out.

Other Thoughts: This involves this product and a rebate denial for sending an order summary that included product, price, vendor (Newegg), and payment method (Paypal) Nothing else would be on the packing sheet or any other paperwork btw. I sent the original bar code cut from the box so they know I got it....its just a scam by Asus and Newegg...Beware.

1 out of 5 eggsWorks great until it dosn't

Pros: It works great until it decides to randomly just drop the connection.

Cons: Randomly drops connection without any external cause. I have had it for just over a month and now it is randomly dropping connection for hours at a time and I can't get a refund or an RMA because my problem occurred just over a month after purchase. I know its the router because I can plug right into my modem and be just fine. whenever I tell it to check for firmware updates it says it already has the latest firmware. You can restart the thing a dozen times but you will only get your connection back when it feels like giving it back.

Other Thoughts: This router has seriously shaken my faith in asus and newegg customer service. don't know if I will be buying form either again.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat until the weird power adapter quits

Pros: Open source, many choices for firmware to fit any need
The stock firmware was good enough I never needed to flash
USB ports
Good range
Looks good

Cons: They used a really odd power adaptor, the end is needle-thin, and looks like it could break off very easily. It's 19v why not something more common? After 6 months of use it just gave up the ghost right in the middle of me watching a movie, it was on a surge protector strip, there was no surge, everything else on the strip is working fine, now I have to decide if I want to deal with the nightmare of customer service, if it was a more common adapter I could just run down to Radio Shack and I would still be gushing about my router.

Other Thoughts: I should be able to run down to radio shack and for under 10 dollars have my router up and running, but no now I have to deal with a customer service that from all the reviews and other places I have researched sounds like a horrible experience.
