3 out of 5 eggsEA-N66R Repeater

Pros: Glad I bought the extra warranty on this. I had the EA-N66 at that worked for about a year then went out on me. Then the replacement was the EA-N66R which was not doing a good job at all. And I am a huge ASUS fan but this repeater is not as good or even comes close to the Amped wireless extenders-repeaters.

Cons: Just get too warm after time and I think looses its ability to work when you get them new. Seems to take about a year or so.

Other Thoughts: If you want the best wireless repeater that has 4 ports and kicks, but over anything else I have ever used as a repeater or extender. Go with the Amped products. I like this one and got the 12db gain antennas and I can go 2 blocks away with my phone even. My laptop I can go around 4 blocks. It's an amazing product. I have used Hawkings and many others and the Amped products are the best bar none. So far.

5 out of 5 eggsA Speed Demon

Pros: Wow! I was using one of these to pull the neighbors WiFi into my home. I was using a AC Asus router with a NetGear stick in my desktop. Then I plugged one of these babies in and now I have 1GB. Before I had 144 to 100Mbps. No lag now. I used this setup in my Florida home to pick up the club house 300 feet away and ended up with FREE WiFi at 1GB with 3 Computer, One VOIP Phone setup and the sling on dish DVR.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Love the blue lights.

1 out of 5 eggsUnresolved Problem

Pros: Easy to set up.

Cons: When using the Asus EA-N66 in "Access Point Mode" it will often pass its own IP address to a DHCP client (wired or wireless) as the default gateway, blocking access to the LAN router.
The only solution is to unplug the EA-N66 and allow the DHCP client to request a new LAN IP.

Other Thoughts: A firmware upgrade could easily fix this problem making the EA-N66 a great device. Otherwise it is a good wireless access point.

1 out of 5 eggsNot worth the price. At all.

Pros: • Looks cool.
• Relatively easy setup.

Cons: I don't know where to begin with the cons. I had this thing up and running for about an hour before my great experience turned negative.

After I got the thing all set up and running, I had really a slow connection. I thought maybe I was too far from my router, so I moved the unit from off my desk, to across the room and up on the wall, a good 7 feet high.

It seemed all fine and dandy for about an hour, then suddenly I disconnected. I thought nothing of it at first, since I almost immediately reconnected to the internet, but then it just kept happening. I'd been disconnecting several times a minute for a good hour or so. What's worse about it is that it seems to trick my Network and Sharing Center in the Windows Control Panel into showing that I DO have a connection, but I don't. If it weren't for Dropbox's visual indication, I wouldn't even know I was disconnected. Even now, as I type this review, I've disconnected from the internet 5 times already, for several minutes at a time. Rebooting or going back to factory settings via the asusnetwork page does nothing to help.

I've spent more time today lagging or being disconnected from games and shows than online doing anything. It'll be a miracle if I can even manage to post this review.

Other Thoughts: I can't believe ASUS is selling this paperweight for $100. I used to swear by ASUS products and recommend them to just about everybody I knew, but this calling this thing a disappointment is an understatement.

What I think is most annoying I can put my 5 year old laptop in the same place as the adapter and still manage a stable connection.

Absolute garbage.

4 out of 5 eggsFollow up: 2.4 OR 5Ghz, not both.

Pros: Following up after having this EA-N66 in my home network for a few weeks running solid. It's been running like a champ and I'll be keeping this thing as a backup or moving it to the garage but unfortunately it has let me down in the "dual band" category. See cons.

Solid 300Mb/s speeds within 100ft of the AP. Tested this on multiple devices with newer technology.

Looks cool. At night when the house is dark, this little guy lights up the room with a soft blue glow. Not harsh on the eyes either.

Cons: Here's why I'm docking an egg. You have to choose whether you want to run it as a 2.4Ghz AP or a 5Ghz, you cannot broadcast both at the same time. Claiming it is a "dual-band wireless-N900" implies (at least to me) that you'll get a theoretical 450Mbps on the 2.4 band and another theoretical 450Mbps on the 5ghz band. 450+450 = 900 right? Realistically all of my laptops, wireless desktops, and tablets are pegged at 300Mbps of throughput on both 2.4 and 5 bands, which makes this an "N600" for me in my home, but even more realistically it's more like an "N300" since I can only use one band at a time. I spoke with Justin M. at Asus's tech support and he confirmed for me that yes indeed, this EA-N66 only broadcasts one band at a time. See notes for further explanation.

Other Thoughts: Justin M. from Asus was helpful enough to explain a better purchase for my needs might be the RT-N53 Dual band router, using it as an access point wired directly to my main router. His other suggestion was the RT-N56U, also used as a wired AP directly from my main router. Yes, these are home routers, but within the GUI you can change these to AP's/Repeater mode.

Considering you're spending $89-109 on this EA-N66 for one band only, and the RT-N56U and RT-N53 are both cheaper than this EA-N66 AP...I think I'll be going this route after a little more research.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: Small
Great when it works

Cons: Needs to be rebooted every few days
Drops connection

Other Thoughts: I really liked the idea of this access point. It is small and fast but drops connection every few days and needs to be rebooted. I normally am a big ASUS fan but was disappointed with this product.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: Increased speed (almost double from my internal gaming laptop wireless card, when I'm downstairs in the basement) and a much more stable connection.

Cons: You don't own it yet.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome addition to my home network!

Pros: When my garage is finished, I'm buying another! That's how much I like this little EA-N66 access point. I live in a 3200sqft two-level 4 bedroom home with the main Asus RT-AC66R router upstairs on the top level of the house (in my office, attached to a VZ Fios modem). Since the RT-AC66R is on the opposite end of the house on the 2nd floor, the downstairs opposite rooms (kitchen, family room, front room) all got marginal reception (-60 to -70db and less than 100mb connection rate on the 2.4ghz band and less than 50mb on the 5ghz). I have structured cat5e cabling in the walls and patched in this EA-N66 in the front room on the main floor. After tweaking the settings and a little trial & error, I have amazing coverage downstairs.

Finally! Both of my laptops are pegged at 300mb/sec on the 2.4ghz band and I'm showing -35db to -38db signal strength using inSSIDer.

Cons: Documentation is very limited. In the box was a small pamphlet quick-setup guide with maybe 4-5 pages guiding me through how to remote into the access point. Once I was in using both IE and Chrome browsers, I was on my own from there.

Had to browse forums and spend 4-5 hours setting everything up, reading on my own.

Would be awesome if it were PoE capable for those of us who have that ability.

Other Thoughts: Again, using this as an AP mode. There is structured cat5e cabling connecting the EA-N66 to my RT-AC66R router. Cat6 jacks at both ends, not that it makes much difference.

Anywho, try these settings if you're shooting for 300mb throughput on an 802.11n device. NOTE: Nothing in my house is 802.11a/b/g....everything is n or ac.

EA-N66 AP Settings:

- Frequency = 2.4GHz
- SSID = (enter your router's SSID perfectly here)
- Hide SSID = no
- Wireless Mode = Auto (b/g Protection box checked)
- Channel = Auto
- Channel bandwidth = 40MHz
- Extension Channel = Auto
- Authentication Method = WPA2-Personal
- WPA Encryption = AES
- WPA Pre-Shared Key = (use same as your router)
- Network Key Rotation Interval = 0

btw I left Tx Power adjustment at stock 100mW value. Will play with this later if I get bored.

RT-AC66R Settings under Wireless > Bridge tab:
- Frequency = 2.4Ghz
- AP Mode = AP Only
- Connect to APs in the list = no (blacked out can't change it)

I also used the MAC address on the bottom of the EA-N66 and under "Remote AP List" I found the AP's MAC address and added it under the remote AP list.

When the garage is finished I'm buying another.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for what I need it for

Pros: As an ethernet wireless adaptor, it's does exactly as advertise. Since I am only using it as such, this review will not reflect how well it performs as an AP or as a range extender. The computer I bought from this very website had a horrible built in wireless, just sheer garbage. I ended buying a usb wireless adapter which when it work was fast, but also keep dropping in and out. Since i really don't have room for a pci-e card, this was the next best option. Man I dont regret making the decision. The signal stays strong and not a single interruption during online gaming. The fact that the router I have is also from Asus made installation and recognition a snap. Also ran a speed test, a ping of 22ms dlspd 28.88 mbps and an up of 5.87 mbps. A massive improvement from the previous wireless connections.

Cons: Power cable is kind of short if you want to mount high on your wall. The Ethernet cable they provide is even shorter. If I do experience any drop in performance, I will update this post.
