1 out of 5 eggsTerrible on Windows 8/8.1

This review is from: ASUS PCE-N53 Dual-Band Wireless-N600 Adapter IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n PCI Express Up to 300Mbps downlink+300Mbps uplink Wireless Data Rates

Pros: On older Windows OS, it's a very fast and reliable card.

Cons: Barely works in WIndow 8/8.1 without using odd drivers that sometimes trigger BSOD.

Other Thoughts: It's a fine card if you aren't running Windows 8/8.1, but ASUS has been absolutely atrocious with supporting their drivers. I'm not sure why they've gone so far downhill the past few years.

5 out of 5 eggsFlawless

This review is from: ASUS PCE-N53 Dual-Band Wireless-N600 Adapter IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n PCI Express Up to 300Mbps downlink+300Mbps uplink Wireless Data Rates

Pros: I run my PC 24/7 and this card has had negligible issues. The driver is super stable and never craps out. This prevents unnecessary reboots or device re-enabling.

The antenna's are larger than 90% of other products, but effective in picking up even a mildly weak wifi signal.

I set the card to only use the 5ghz band so as to eliminate any unneeded processing of the 2.4ghz band.

I've also used this card to stream via Twitch and haven't had any issues with bandwidth even while streaming 1080p@60fps. So to anyone who says you can't game or stream using wifi, you obviously don't know how to configure your PC/network or don't know what you are talking about.

Cons: I do wish the driver had more features or at least documentation that gave a better description of what the few features it does have actually do. (More about this in the "Other Thoughts" section.

Additionally, the card does not have external antennas which doesn't give you the option to change antenna position should you encounter any interference from being too close to metal surfaces (Such as the PC case)

Other Thoughts: The driver has some features that have no description. one of which is called "Multimedia Mode". My assumption is that this helps avoid conflict with other home media devices such as game consoles or DVR boxes. However, there is no ACTUAL documentation included with the hardware or on ASUS' website giving any information as to what it does or if it has any benefit.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with windows 7 and 8.1

This review is from: ASUS PCE-N53 Dual-Band Wireless-N600 Adapter IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n PCI Express Up to 300Mbps downlink+300Mbps uplink Wireless Data Rates

Pros: If you actually read the instructions in the first place it will definitely work with windows 8.1, I had it like 3 years on my windows 7 pc and now on my new windows 8.1 pc with no problems at all.

"1. Please install the hardware driver 5.0.35.0 first before connecting the PCE-N53 PCI-E wireless adapter to your computer."
READ!!!!

Cons: Green pcb

1 out of 5 eggsBroke & Terrible service

This review is from: ASUS PCE-N53 Dual-Band Wireless-N600 Adapter IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n PCI Express Up to 300Mbps downlink+300Mbps uplink Wireless Data Rates

Pros: Fast connection

Cons: Broke, poor customer service

Other Thoughts: The 5ghz connection broke, so it can only connect at 2.5 ghz. Their customer service states they will only fix it if I send it in and wait for the repair. The problem is if I return this card, then my desktop computer (used for work) will have zero connectivity. So I would have to be without Internet access for up to 8 weeks for a $54.99 card. Not exactly great service.

5 out of 5 eggsNo problems here

This review is from: ASUS PCE-N53 Dual-Band Wireless-N600 Adapter IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n PCI Express Up to 300Mbps downlink+300Mbps uplink Wireless Data Rates

Pros: Consistent 200+ Mbps on 5GHz band

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: From the other reviews, it seems I am the one lucky owner? I'm on Windows 8.1 and have never had a single issue with this card since I've owned it. I did not install the software and instead just installed the driver for this card. I'm ~50ft from the router (Asus RT-N53) and never get slow or dropped connections. Maybe something changed on the newer cards?

1 out of 5 eggsDriver Nightmare

This review is from: ASUS PCE-N53 Dual-Band Wireless-N600 Adapter IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n PCI Express Up to 300Mbps downlink+300Mbps uplink Wireless Data Rates

Pros: When it works, high throughput.

Cons: Like many other users have noted, this product loses it function over time to the point that connection nears .25mbps on speedtest on a 30mbps network. I just bought a tp link card and it works flawlessly.

Other Thoughts: Stay away from this card. It can also be noted that asus has not released one driver update for the card over its multiyear existence.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat while it lasted

This review is from: ASUS PCE-N53 Dual-Band Wireless-N600 Adapter IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n PCI Express Up to 300Mbps downlink+300Mbps uplink Wireless Data Rates

Pros: Worked very well for a few months.

Cons: Spotty initial installation on Windows 8.1 featuring several crashes. At the time I bought it, 8.1 drivers were not available on the asus website, so I had to install the drivers off the cd, which worked fine. Several months later, I saw that the 8.1 drivers were available, so I downloaded and started installing them, which uninstalled the original cd drivers, crashing my computer. I took out the card, installed 8.1 drivers, and installed the card again, at which point it didn't work. Neither of the lights turned on on the side, and it wasn't recognized by the system. I tried a different pci port but same thing. It's dead :-(

Other Thoughts: Does anyone have a recommendation for a dual band wifi adapter that works well with 5ghz on a windows 8.1 system? Rosewill N900 or TPLink WDN 4800?

2 out of 5 eggsUnless you use Windows 8 do not buy.

This review is from: ASUS PCE-N53 Dual-Band Wireless-N600 Adapter IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n PCI Express Up to 300Mbps downlink+300Mbps uplink Wireless Data Rates

Pros: This card has great reception strength and connectivity that rivals most other cards. Software AP mode allows for wireless connection sharing. 300Mbps wireless connection appears consistent.

Cons: This card is not worth it unless of course you plan on using it in conjunction with Windows 8. As it turns out, in two separate Windows 7 installations the card fails to function properly after having it only 3 months. On start up, as soon as the less than stellar drivers kick in, the entire system hangs, plug and play refuses to refresh the windows device list, and the system becomes basically unusable. Booting into safe mode reveals that with networking disabled both systems functioned properly. However, after re enabling it, the system hangs yet again. ASUS released an update for both the software as well as the drivers, however, this software is only available for Windows 8.1 and actually prohibits installation on Windows 7 or earlier. Coming as a bundled installer, it is impossible to extract solely the device drivers making this patch unavailable to anyone not using windows 8. Therefore, this card, while it functioned well originally, after experiencing problems two weeks after receiving it, is not worth the hassle.

Other Thoughts: I now have to RMA this card straight through ASUS under their one year warranty and hope the card itself is just faulty. However, judging by the other reviews, I am not the only one with this issue, which leads me to believe this is just a poor product in an otherwise stellar line of components.

Cons: Will not connect to N band on my B,G,N router

Other Thoughts: I hope ASUS reads this and contacts me.
