5 out of 5 eggsGreat router

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Easy initial setup. Supports DD-WRT and the installation of DD-WRT was straight forward. Gives good coverage through most of the house, only a small spot at the opposite corner where the signal drops out. Distance and several walls in between are the cause. I am still setting up the house, so I haven't had a change to move it to its final location.

Cons: Unbalanced when upright and there are more than one or two wired connections. It does slide easily when one of the wires is tugged on (cats like to play with the wires). Some shelf liner or non-slip pads will help that.

Other Thoughts: Looking at buying another one for my uncle to replace an older router.

4 out of 5 eggsThe good and the bad

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Ran for a bit over two years flawlessly, no glitches whatsoever.

Cons: The 5 GHz stopped radiating at about 2.1 years, just out of warranty.

Other Thoughts: However, the good news is it still perking, as I disassembled the unit (A tough task, they do NOT want you inside!), reseated the cables from the circuit board to the antenna connectors, and now running like new.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Great range, my primary pc is located 2 floors below the router and I get 4ish/5 bars. Ability to remotely monitor, configure, and control the router is really useful.

Cons: Sometimes the internet connection disappears over wireless connection. Can be fixed by disconnected and reconnecting to the router.

Other Thoughts: My previous router was a WRT54G which was quite old, This is the only other wireless router I have experience with.

1 out of 5 eggsMost Expensive Paperweight I've Ever Owned

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: This product on paper is great, lots of options/features to basically configure your network however you like. Specs are great as well.

Cons: This product purely just does not work, Google the model number (RT-AC66U) just to see all of the problems that people have with it. Initially the wireless signal would drop just after 10 minutes or so. That being said I have done all sorts of research and troubleshooting. I have changed virtually every setting in the interface, rebooted (both soft and hard), factory reset, etc and nothing worked. The final straw really was when after updating the firmware the router is now bricked.

I will seriously stay away from ASUS networking products in the future.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

If you feel you feel you unit is stuck or you can't access via the default password; hold the reset button and the WPS button for at least 10 seconds. When the lights flash you will know it has completed a reset. After which you should head to the support site and download the latest firmware which came out 1/12/2015 for your device and upload it to your router. After which you will need to do a power cycle to clear all the capacitors to make sure all packets have left the system. To do this, just remove power to the router for at least 10 seconds to fully allow the capacitors to drain. If you still need help after this with you unit please send me you configuration file and system log and place case #N150167139 in the subject line for reference. I'm here to help you and all others with these issues, as our customer loyalty department dedicated to bringing a resolution to all issues related to our products.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't Buy Asus Routers

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Extremely fast when new out of box.

Cons: Wifi essentially died after 6 months. This is a common problem with Asus routers. Google it.

Other Thoughts: Asus customer service is also pretty terrible. I have to ship back to them at my own cost and wait weeks for repair. I have read other people complain that it takes longer than expected for repair and often comes back still broken. Meanwhile, I'm going to buy another brand of router. Neve will buy Asus again as I don't think this sort of company should be supported.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Daywalker,

Have you ever thought about calling the 812 282 2787 number for wirelss support or live chat option before you went looking for negative comments? If would like I can help you process your RMA and possibly help you troubleshoot it before sending it in preventing an RMA. 5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Handles a lot of wired and wireless clients flawlessly with great scalability for a home network.

Below is an exemple of the jobs this router is still performing after 2 years.

(got two 8ethernet ports hubs hooked to it that are almost full, and have up to 9-12 wireless devices running at the same time)

Got a server running a NFS for media streaming which runs well.

Also got a local linux mirror and binhost running on my fastest machine and the network keeps up with the speed of the samsung 850 ssd in that computer with no problems. The device fetching files for updates does not even have time to report the download speed from this pc since anything under 500mb shows 00:00 download time.

I also run compile jobs with distcc on multiple machines that compile in ramdisks since i use a source based linux distro named gentoo and therefore compile all my programs from source.

Cons: Firmware needs to be reflashed/restored when the router is shutdown improperly (requiring a windows computer).

Need to keep a dualboot laptop available for this purpose since all my other boxes are linux.

2 out of 5 eggsNot impressed

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Strong signal. Worked great at first.

Cons: After about 6 months of ownership this thing just started performing poorly for no reason. I tried resetting the router numerous times and it would work ok for a while before I had to reset it again. I went back to my old router (that I kept thankfully) and it works much better. I bought this router thinking that it would help increase speeds as we connect as many as 8 devices at the same time. My old Netgear WGR614 works better than this and I paid $35 for it 2 1/2 years ago. Not happy considering this cost me $170. Now past 30 days and can't RMA.

Other Thoughts: Jeff B

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Jeff,

Have you seperated your 2.4GHz and 5GHz to run different bands to increase its channel bandwidth for better signal reception? Are you having wslow wireless or wired speeds? Or both? What would prevent you from an RMA? If you would like to discuss this with me please email me and place case #N141252682 in the subject line for future reference. 5 out of 5 eggsRock Solid Router

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: -Excellent web interface for easy configuration
-Excellent range and speed
-AC standard improves performance and makes it future-proof
-USB ports to share printer or external hard drive

Cons: Minor issue where automatic firmware updater can't connect to ASUS, so I have to manually download firmware updates; not a big deal.

Other Thoughts: High value AC wireless router with excellent performance that will be viable for a long time.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Router, Very Easy to Use

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Pretty easy to set up. Upon first power on, I had to open Internet Explorer on my desktop in order for the automatic ASUS set up utility to pop up and run.

I am amazed at how powerful the wireless signal is coming from this machine. I live in an apartment with lots walls and appliances, confined in a living space of roughly 1,100 square feet. This router was able to penetrate through 3 walls at a distance of over 35 feet into the master bedroom, to deliver a stable 4 to 5 bar connection (solid 30+ Mbps most of the time).

I also really enjoy the wireless printing capability. I was easily able to set up all family computers to share the same printer.

Cons: Although the wireless signal is pretty powerful in the setup explained above, I am unable to seamlessly stream Steam games across my network. I often encounter lag/stuttering issues when attempting to stream games such as Fable, Half-Life 2, and GTA IV.

I imagine this is a pretty demanding task, especially coupled with the fact that I live in a dense residential apartment complex (possible interference with the wireless devices/networks of 3 adjacent neighbors), and that my router's wireless signal needs to penetrate through multiple walls to reach most of the computers in my apartment. I guess I'll have to wait until I buy a house, with minimal interference from neighboring devices/networks, in order to be sure where the problem lies.

Also, this router does run hot! Be sure to keep it in an open, well ventilated area, as I can imagine over time this may be the cause of premature router failure for some users.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this router to anyone. I plan on keeping this router for it's entire lifespan, and gigabit support means I do not need to worry about updating/replacing the device to handle future ISP speed upgrades.
