5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: This router works well. Besides having excellent range, it has a great host of features that have made it work well in a small business environment. Using this in a 4,000 sq ft store front with it on one end of the building and it reaches to the other end very well. Coverage strong even through multiple walls, file cabinets and solid wood desk. It works as print server for an older Canon laser color printer/copier/fax. I had to call Canon and have them walk me through manual driver selection on the computers, but the router is handling it's end just fine. The internet in the office is DSL because cable is not available in this area. Turned the wifi off on the DSL modem/router combo. And used existing building ethernet to patch it into the WAN port. Shares the internet wonderfully with even less response time than the wifi off of the modem/router. All the cell phones work well on it. No problem attaching any device or any functionality. Love the built-in firewall feature too. The other great thing is this business will not need an upgrade on their router for a long time. Future compatibility looks great!

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Thanks Asus for another great product! I would recommend this product to anyone.

1 out of 5 eggsManufacturer Warranty Not Honored

Pros: Good product.

Cons: TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE WILL NOT HONOR WARRANTY.
This is my actually chat transcript with ASUS support.

Edin W: Hello ...., thank you for contacting ASUS support. Please give me a few moments to review your information. I will be with you shortly.

Hi ...., how may I help you?

Me: I have 5 of these units one of power adapters is not working. I tried one of the other PSUs and and works.

*and it works

I would like a replacement PSU

Edin W: I apologize for the inconvenience.

May I know the date of purchase?

Me: how on I will look it up

hold on i will look it up

2/26/2014

Edin W: In this case I request you to contact our eStore to get replacement.

Me: eStore?

it should be under warranty

Edin W: Please visit the link below for the eStore.

http://us.estore.asus.com/

Me: it says it has a 2 year warranty

Edin W: Yes, but the accessories have only 1 year warranty.

Me: I just took it out of the box

Let me make sure that we understand each other. You are telling me that the product that says has a 2 year warranty only has a 1 year warranty because I trouble shot the problem and told you what was wrong with it. If I said there isn't any lights on it would you replace the entire thing?

Edin W: As per our policies accessories will have only one year warranty.

Me: OK I will make sure everyone knows this.

Other Thoughts: I am not sure what ASUS is attempting to achieve with this policy, lots of open box product at retail stores?

3 out of 5 eggsWorked Great... for 8 months

Pros: Worked great, with good wireless signal/speed, until a few weeks ago.

Cons: Then intermittant disconnects on the entire home network. Then finally the router died. cannot even connect to it with ip address any more.

Other Thoughts: In the process of Contacting Asus Support. Hope it results in a new router. These things are very expensive.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Kevin,

I want to thank you for posting this review and we are sorry to hear your experience with the router. On behalf of ASUS we apologize for any inconvenience this issue has caused you. Please allow me to assist you, please try to powercycle (turn off) the router then after 10 seconds turn it on again then press the reset button for 8 seconds to reset the router then try to set it up again to check if the router is providing an IP address.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid router with great speed and reliability. Easy to use GUI.

Pros: I've had this router running 24/7 for nearly 2 years now. I have had zero issues with it. I have VPN running, a PLEX media server, multiple IP's on WAN, port forwarding (web server), and a guest wifi 5ghz ssid with no password. I have had absolutely no issues with any of it.

The GUI is user friendly and easy to configure. Firmware updates are a breeze since they pretty much download and install automatically (when you click update). I've had no latency issues with anything and I test regularly. I've had 15 wifi users connected once while playing Fibbage during a party and not a single person lost connection or had latency issues.

Can't stress this enough - this is a top notch router for the average consumer at a great price.

Cons: I have yet to experience a single problem, so there are no cons. I keep the firmware updated and I have the router sitting in a cool basement room.

Other Thoughts: The RT-AC68U is the router that replaces this one. It has a faster CPU and a USB 3.0 port. I would personally purchase this router since it has had time for ASUS to release good firmware patches and the extra cpu will probably not be utilized by most households.
If you need the USB 3.0 to run a "media server" off a flash drive then go for the 68U.

1 out of 5 eggsWill degrade over time

Pros: Looks nice and has a nice range...at first

Cons: Your signal will degrade over time. You will also get frequent disconnects, 5ghz will simply stop working and require a reboot. The firmware is full of bugs, and the team working on the firmware even has to take code/fixes from Merlin (he creates custom firmware for the router) which isn't a good sign. The router also gets extremely hot, even in well ventilated areas.

Other Thoughts: I bought this router in 2012, and within a month I started to notice small issues. Over time these issues became greater and greater. I'm at the point where the issues are so terrible, I'm considering purchasing another router, and it won't be an Asus. This is unfortunate because at the time I spent over $250 on this router and I expected it to last me at least 3 years.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Jason,

Thank you for taking the time to communicate to us why our ASUS products did not meet your expectations. Please accept our sincerest apology for any trouble or inconvenience, we have caused you. Let me go ahead and further assist you. That's why you encountered the disconnection from the internet due to interference. Elevate your router away from floors. You’ll get better reception if the router is on a desk, not on the floor. You should also pay attention to the kinds of materials the router is near. For example, placing the router on a metal desk or up against a metal wall will cause problems. Signals can travel through a wood desk easily, but metal will obstruct the signals. This is the examples appliances can cause wireless interference, including cordless phones, baby monitors, and microwave ovens.

Please try these steps for resolution:
Step 1. Adjust the placement of your router. Simply adjusting the placement and orientation of the wireless router may improve the 2.4GHz and 5GHz signal strength.
Step 2. Adjust the antennas on the router. Try adjusting the antennas to achieve the best performance of your 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks.
Step 3. Please try changing the Channel bandwidth to boost the frequency of 2.4 GHz, please select 20MHz and control channel of 1, 6 or 11. For the 5GHz select it to 80MHz and change the control channel to 165 or 161.
Step 4. Please try to update your firmware version and hard reset the router and create a new wireless settings.

1 out of 5 eggsBeen through 5 of these. They just die.

Pros: Great performance
Pretty good software
Easy to use
Nice wireless configuration, performance and range

Cons: This router is great, except that it consistently dies after just a few months. I went through1 DOA, then 4 more have died in a short period.

I have never experienced this. Usually I am looking for a new router before they just die. Done with Asus Routers. Too bad.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I want to thank you for posting this review and I understand that you have an issue with the router. On behalf of ASUS we apologize for any inconvenience this issue has caused you but let me go ahead and further assist you. Can we have more information about the router's issue before it stopped working? have you tried to powercycle the router or try to do a hard reset or restore the router to its factory settings?

All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control testings and final inspections for both hardware and software before sending it out to the stores worldwide. ASUS provides warranty for the unit in order to fix or repair any isolated factory escape defect.

2 out of 5 eggsDefective 5GHz band - RMA'd

Pros: Fast speeds on the 2.4GHz band. Accepts DD-WRT and ASUS-Merlin custom firmware. Default firmware is also easily attainable on their support website.

Newegg's RMA process has always been good for me.

Cons: I could not get the 5GHz band to work properly. It would constantly disconnect me, stop broadcasting the SSID, fail to connect. When it did finally connect on any device it was very slow (think B/s instead of MB/s).

Technical support is hard to understand and made me repeat everything that I had already told them I did. I don't mind that as much as most people that end up calling have little or no technical know how.

When the technician had no clue what was wrong they put me on hold and then hang up on me (i immediately went to the feedback prompt)

Other Thoughts: Keep in mind that I just received a defective product, and that just happens sometimes. Other than the defective 5GHz I think it would have been a good router.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Jordan,

I want to thank you for posting this review and I understand that you have an issue with the router. I apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused you but let me go ahead and further assist you. May I know your distance from the router when you are trying to connect to your 5GHz and what device? Do you also have the latest firmware for the router?

2 out of 5 eggsSomething happened

Pros: This device worked perfectly for years. Never had to be rebooted, never dropped packets, was easy to use and easier to configure.

Cons: Some point in the past 3 months it appears that my device and that of thousands of others started dropping packets and having generally unreliable connections. I did not update the firmware, which leads me to believe that there's something out there that may have infected all of our devices and caused some harm. That or there's a problem in the firmware that is date related.

Other Thoughts: Until they figure out the packet loss issue for all of us, I cannot recommend. However, with that resolved, this device was the best I've used.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Chad,

I want to thank you for posting this review and I understand that you have an issue with the router. 1 out of 5 eggsNot as advertised

Pros: It works, and I can get online and at least stream videos and play games.

Cons: -ASUS stock firmware isn't that great
-ASUS falsely advertised this router. Functions such as AiRadar does not exist at all.
-Cannot achieve 450 Mbps on 2.4 Ghz band regardless of settings. TurboQAM doesn't even exist on this router.
-Poor wireless performance, and no AC exclusive mode only or ability to select specific range of bands.

Other Thoughts: I've tried all sorts of firmwares, and settings, and nothing seems to work to get this to operate correctly as advertised. Even DD-WRT worked slightly better, but it's a work in progress.

I've yet to see how ASUS fixes this problem for me. I would like a different product or at least a refund so I can get a different brand that works as advertised. Paid too much for what I apparently didn't get.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Brandon,

I want to thank you for posting this review and I understand that you have an issue with the router's wireless performance. I apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused you but let me go ahead and further assist you. Please be advised that based on the unit's specification the unit is dual band it has 2.4 and 5 GHz frequency where you can use to connect your device.
