4 out of 5 eggsTop Notch router

Pros: Easy setup, easy firmware update, good connection speed. Good settings and options.

Cons: It says 150% coverage, but the coverage was the same as the Asus RT16 it replaced.

Other Thoughts: I tried a Tr endNet Dual Band router first, but it would not maintain speed. This routers is just as good as the RT16 it replaced. Many settings and options for setup. I've been using Asus various products for years, but their best products are their routers by far, IMHO.

5 out of 5 eggsAsus RT-AC66U versus Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200

Pros: The Asus RT-AC66U is FANTASTIC. I've had it for several years, and it is still rocking this house. Setup is easy. Interface is simple and really quite effective at controlling who is doing what when you have kids who want to avoid homework and stay up all night watching youtube and gaming. Never had any problems updating firmware. Range is INSANE. Speeds all the way across the house and down in the basement (as far away as you can get in this house) are FAST FAST FAST. Solid connections, easy to connect, never any problems at all with this router.

Cons: None that I can think of. Seriously. Zero problems. And now that it's way cheaper than when I bought it, it's even better than before.

Other Thoughts: I thought the other day, "It's been a really long time since I got a new router. Major advances must have been made in the last few years. Time to gear up!". So, I went to Best Buy after reading some reviews, and got the Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200. You can see it on NewEgg here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122611&cm_re=Netgear_Nighthawk_X6_AC3200-_-33-122-611-_-Product

I got it home, unpacked it, and was so impressed with the "stealth fighter" looks... the router, bristling with antennas, looked like it must be fast. The specs on the box were insane!

And guess what? My computer downstairs, across the house in the basement, my computer baaaarely connected to the 5GHz band. With my old router, it connected solid and had great speeds!

With my old router, I used to connect to the 2.4GHz band with five full bars... with the new router, three bars.

And, get this... I did speedtest.net, and kept switching back and forth between the two routers to see if what I was experiencing was actually true. And it was. My old router had more solid connections, and much faster down/up speeds than with the Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200. Period.

If you get this router, you will NOT be disappointed. Period. I'm not wasting any more money on routers, until I do some research and find out what ASUS model kicks this one to the curb. ASUS knows what they are doing, and they have a fan for life!

5 out of 5 eggsbest router

Pros: Great router for gaming delivers 11.1 mb/s through steam on a extender that is connected at a 2.5hz dual band. Over using a ethernet port on the router would be better but the extension acts as a wireless card for my desktop.

Best route ever had.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: On my phone the wireless will cut out but I'm not sure if thats a problem on my phone or if its the routers problem but restarting my Phones wireless seems to always fix the problem.

2 out of 5 eggswireless degrades to uselessness after 6 months...

Pros: Fast when working

Cons: Wireless dying after 6 months.

Other Thoughts: It was an awesome router until about 6 months later, wireless connection begins to degrade from 50mbps to <2mbps, while wired connection still work fine. I have to reset it daily now to get the wireless running. Updated firmware, no help. I have many Asus products and this one is very disappointing. Reading other reviews, looks like RMA repair is flaky. Not sure if Asus would give me a new router.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Daniel,

Thank you for your time on posting this review, we are sorry to hear your experience with the ASUS router. Please allow me to assist you.

Can we have a detailed information about the unit's issue. Are you experiencing this wireless issue with the 2.4 and 5GHz frequency? have you tried changing channel bandwidth? may I know the firmware version that is currently installed with the router. Please make sure that your router is placed in an open and strategic area since this device uses radio waves to communicate. Do not place your wireless device or computer right next to the router because the 18-inch radius around the router is a wireless dead zone.

To resolve wireless speed and strength issues, it is recommended to use WPA-Auto Personal. If you wish to attain optimal Wireless-N speeds set your wireless security to WPA2-Personal.

For further assistance or if you want to discuss this matter with me, please email me at customerloyalty@asus.com and put case #N160147788 in the subject line for a reference. 5 out of 5 eggsHigh Quality, Fast throughput.

Pros: Easy to set up. Using both 2.4 and 5, streams all devices of Family of 8 at the same time. A desktop, 3 phones, 3 tables, 3 TVs, a power-line. Great converge over 3 floors, two NASs' attached auto backups go un-noticed. Helped me recolonize my weakness was my ISP and ever since I switched, nothing has dropped since, thx for the great tools!

Cons: Paid $190 CAD. No USB 3 for my NAS's.

Other Thoughts: Looking forward to exploring bridging to older 2.4 Ns as hotspots.

4 out of 5 eggsBest router I've ever had

Pros: -It works. Constantly.
-It's super easy to set up out of the box.
-Making minor adjustments (i.e. portforwarding, changes to guest networks) is again, super easy. And adding a printer or hard drive through the 2 USB ports.
- It's powerfully fast. I live in a relatively small 2 bedroom apt with very VERY thick walls. I don't have cell service in my apt because of this but I still have strong WIFI signal everywhere.
- DD-WRT is easy to install

Cons: - Had a major security flaw that wasn't fixed until recently.
- USB 2.0

Other Thoughts: Anyone who wants a very fast and reliable router with easy to use interface.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid Router

Pros: Several firmware choices, built in USB for network file sharing, easy setup, guest networks

Cons: USB is only 2.0 wish it was 3.0, have to reboot occasionally

Other Thoughts: I have had this router now for almost 3 years without many problems. It has been very reliable. I do have to reboot it every once in a while (maybe every other month) but its manageable.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router!

Pros: + Easy to flash with DD-WRT, no SFTP required.
+ Detachable Antenna

Cons: - Weird port location

Other Thoughts: This has been my favorite router to date. Over the years I have used a number of routers usually flashed with DD-WRT. Since Buffalo is no longer using their semi-stock version of my favorite firmware, I started to look at other brands and found this ASUS model. The flashing process was so simple, much better than other routers I have owned where I had to do a funky trick to flash the router using SFTP.

I used to buy cheap, sub-$100 routers but this may have changed me. With the extra CPU power this device has, clicking through the router interface is much more pleasant than I have ever experienced.

This router is used to create a wireless bridge with another router and it does a great job. A bonus with the DD-WRT firmware is that I can use the 5Ghz band for the bridge while using the 2.4GHz for a local hotspot. That is something the out of the box firmware does not support.

5 out of 5 eggsNo Problems!

Pros: -Supports DD-WRT, Tomato and Merlin firmware
-Covers my 1600 sq. ft. apartment without issue

Cons: -Pretty tall when using its stand in the vertical position

Other Thoughts: Running Merlin firmware. Very intuitive. All the features I could want. Have a hard drive connected via USB for backups.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid

Pros: Worked very well at the beginning.

Cons: It worked well for about a month. Overtime, I started experiencing signal degradation, which required frequent reboot.
One day after months of ownership and constant need to reboot, I completely lost the wireless signal. Called customer service and had to pay to ship it for warranty repair.
It worked for a few months after the warranty repair however, the same problem is starting again. Even though I am still covered under warranty, I will not pay shipping to send it back again. I cannot trust Asus in being able to resolve this problem.

Other Thoughts: I had a similar problem with Asus warranty repair on a motherboard a while back. I have heard others complaing about the warranty repair not resolving their problems as well.
I have been an Asus fan and customer for over 15 years. I have built many PC's (too many to count) for myself and others using Asus MoBo, graphic cards, etc. I don't plan on buying another Asus product.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Keivan,

Thank you for your time on posting this review, we are sorry to hear your experience with ASUS router. Please allow me to assist you.

On behalf of ASUS we apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. Can I have your case or RMA number for me to check and review your records, the repair that was done to the unit and the troubleshooting steps provided and the ASUS routers problem.
