1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: Worked well for almost 3 months. Has many options/features.

Cons: Every 2 - 3 minutes (lasting for 5 minutes) it looses connections for both wired and wireless.

Other Thoughts: Bought this router due to good reviews. Worked well for the first 3 months, but then it was loosing connection couple of weekends ago. Performed several instances of disconnecting and reconnecting router and modem power cable to see if it would work, but to no avail. On last attempt, router did not power up. RMA done on it. Bought a cheap router to hold me over and it works fine, but is slower than the Asus router. Out of pocket expense to ship it. Now for the real disappointing part, received the unit back, and it powers up, but still no connection. The document that came along indicates "Test ok". Something definitely wrong with the quality control.

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable.

Pros: Good UI, sleek design, good menu organization.

Cons: Randomly rejects passwords, forces modem disconnect on on reset.

Other Thoughts: Ordered an Asus router for a gaming household. Not worth the money and effort to set it up. Port fowarding requires a router reboot, disabling the entire house network for several minutes. Router randomly rejects passwords when accessing the management panel. Complete reset factory reset needed for every small problem with the router, because you can't access the web panel whenever there is a problem (and there is too often one). Router crashes when trying to upgrade firmware, needing another reset.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsPretty good range

Pros: Great range and Speed Capability
A/C Connection is amazing no drops stable speeds
Router Menu is great (has many options needed for me)
Doesn't interfere with my wireless headset (Astro A50)

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Make sure you update this router and check frequently (RECOMMENDED) just for safety.

The menu could be better but its at its best.

2 out of 5 eggsNot good

Pros: Offers a lot of features, I guess

Cons: Wireless just doesn't work right. I used to use this as my main router starting about August 2013, and used wireless USB devices to connect my Linux desktop to it. The connections were always flaky but I wrote them off as Linux driver problems (Linux wireless support is not good). Then I finally got Google Fiber in March of 2015, and they provide their own wireless router. I decided to put the Asus device in wireless bridge mode, so I could run an ethernet cable from my desktop to this device and let it handle wireless. It still sucks. It will drop off connections all the time, even if I've just rebooted the thing. DNS resolutions in particular are terrible. You'll load half of a page, and the other half will be on a separate CDN domain, and the page just never loads. Youtube pages load but the video won't. I've tried both 2.4 and 5GHz, I've tried stock and Merlin firmwares, it's just junk.

Other Thoughts: I guess I'll be paying an electrician to fish cat5e into my office. I've already drilled through the living room wall once; I doubt my wife will give me another crack at it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Zachary,

I certainly understand your concern with your router. I would like to personally assist you on this matter. I want to know and clarify if your Google Fiber is 2in1 type of a product, what I mean, is it a model/router type of a product? If so, you have to contact the manufacturer of your product or to your provider to set it up in bridge mode. Please let me know how it goes. You can email me at customerloyalty@asus.com and place case # N150508180 in the subjet line for a reference.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router

Pros: Extremely fast, great signal coverage and penetration at my home.

Cons: Price, but isn't that always a con for quality products?

Other Thoughts: I had an issue where I thought the router was dead. The power supply light was blinking and the router wouldn't power up. I ordered a replacement power supply from (unnamed auction site) to no avail. I finally called tech support, they had me hold in the reset button for like 2 minutes. It worked, the router booted right back up and has been working perfectly since.

1 out of 5 eggsASUS RT-AC66U NEVER AGAIN!!

Pros: It looks nice, & arrived fast.

Cons: Unreliable, & cost me $25 restocking fee because it was purchased more than 30 days ago.
Also, Adam from
ASUS Customer Loyalty, You can pick on customers for not calling support, instead you should be more worried about the amount of failures ASUS is having with this router!
Bad Quality Control & Bad Customer Service makes people not want to deal with ASUS any more.

Other Thoughts: I am a system Builder & I bought this router to have it on hand for a future customer that might need it. When I set up the router, the TiVo's wouldn't connect & it stopped working all together. I tried to get in to the router to check configuration, & I couldn't get back in to the router settings, or even connect to it. I tried resetting the router many times, just to get more aggravated. If I buy anything from ASUS in the future, it will be a motherboard, only because they are proven to be Quality.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat for 2 years

Pros: Feature rich (static IP's and QoS is important to me) Above average range. Easy to understand user interface

Cons: Just like another reviewer (Robert A. Feb 23, 2015), after 2 years of use, the router needs reboot every day. Both wired and wireless intermittently drops. I upgraded firmware but that didn't help.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I understand that after 2 years your router needs to be rebooted everyday because of unstabled connection. I want to apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused you. 4 out of 5 eggsGood Advance Router

Pros: Many advanced features. Adjustable antennas are removable if you want to upgrade them. The Asus firmware and software updates have been easy enough to install.

Fast & stable

Cons: The printer port / USB port have proven trouble some to use - Not Plug & Play. (-1 egg)

Unit does tent to run Hot as it uses about 10 watts of power.

Very Poor cooling design (like most routers) the Design team makes the case "stylish" rather than functional for natural cooling.

Other Thoughts: My Cooler Master case has a large fan on the top so ** I passively cool the Router, seems to improve reliability / stability.

Hey - ASUS - put a fan in your routers or add a grill on the top for natural convection to keep this 10 watt beast cool.

Your going to need to read up on the feature if IT networking is not your field - LOTS of great features - may overwhelm the casual user.

2 out of 5 eggsGood router but drops connections after 2 years of use

Pros: The first 2 years I had great connections with this router.

Cons: Going into my third year, I now have to reboot this router every day.

Other Thoughts: I usually upgrade the router when a new version comes out but that may be part of my troubles. Luckily I bought an extended warranty on this device.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Bob,

We appreciate the effort in posting this review. I understand that you have issue with the router. I want to apologize for the inconvenience this issue have caused you. I know that you are disappointed with the router. Can you please do a hard reset on the router and do not update the firmware yet. Observe the connection for a few days. 2 out of 5 eggsOverheats

Pros: It has a lot of features and great range

Cons: Randomly and intermittently restarts due to overheating. I contacted Asus and RMA'd which I had to pay for despite owning it for less than a month time. They did absolutely nothing and sent it back with the same problem. After much agony dealing with their customer service I learned I'd have to RMA it again (and pay shipping). I didn't way to pay the money or have time to deal w/ downtime so I tried to fix it myself. I voided my warranty and opened it and immediately noticed poor ventilation. There's nearly no opening near the heatsink. Fortunately just taking the top off fixed my problem and works fine now - as long as the top stays off.

Other Thoughts: Don't' bother with this one. Customer service is bad. Will make you pay for shipping, and are inept at diagnosing problems.

What makes it worse is that the more research I do the more it looks like this is a known issue yet they pretended that they didn't know about it - which is quite dishonest

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer

We value your time and effort in posting your thoughts about the product and in our customer service. We will take note of this concern that you experienced.
