2 out of 5 eggsDNLA service no longer functions after recent firmware update

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: DNLA
2.4GHz signal strength is amazing
5.0GHz is extremely fast
Menu is very easy to understand and use

Cons: After recent firmware update, DNLA service no longer functions

Other Thoughts: 3 months ago when ASUS deployed it's previous firmware it broke the DNLA service on the router.

Before I was able to upload movies to my drive and they would immediately show up on all of my DNLA devices.

Since that firmware was released in order to get any movies that I upload to appear I either have to reboot the router or turn off and on the DNLA service.

There have been a few posts about this on the ASUS website since September of this year. Well before the newest firmware was released. The newest firmware still hasn't fixed this problem.

I will never buy another ASUS product ever again, here is why.

* I have been an avid ASUS customer since 1997.
* I have always had fantastic customer service with them, top notch.

Since this started happened I've had to go back to the ASUS website to attempt to get technical support.

The ASUS website is the biggest pile of garbage I have ever seen in my life. I attempted to create a ticket, I got this as a response "Connection Refused". I tried using 3 different browsers, my phone, a completely different network, still the same results. I tried going onto their forums and I waited 5 complete minutes for a thread to load. The same amount of time passed when I tried to create my own thread.

Then I tried the "Email Us" section of the website. "Server is busy, try again". I did this a total of 10 times over the last 3 days with the same results.

Buyer beware, ASUS is not the same company as it once was. This router is currently broken in it's current firmware.

5 out of 5 eggsWorth every penney

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: -Fast
-Good range
-Easy
-Looks Good

Cons: -Can't think of aything

Other Thoughts: Over that past couple of years I've been expanding my streaming usage and have a total of 8 devices. 7 of them are wireless and networked, and one of them is an HTPC hooked up via ethernet to a 60" plasma.

The previous router was a Netgear WNDR3300n that was receiving a Charter download of 25 Mbps. While it performed OK, a few months ago it started to drop a connection regularly and I would have to unplug it for a half an hour to get it to reset.

Then Charter recently offered 60Mbps. Since my modem at that time was a Motorola Surfboard and only DOCIS 2, I would need to upgrade to get the full speed. Ended up getting the SB6121

I picked up this router and a new 6121. Both were easy to install and set up and what a HUGE difference it made. It was like turning the lights on in a darkened room.

I have a 2600 sq home and the signal reaches every room.

After a few days, the modem started shutting off and rebooting randomly a couple times a day and slowly increased. After searching the web, I found the solution revolved around the DHCP query frequency setting being set too high on the router. Changing it from Aggressive Mode to Normal Mode fixed that. I changed it 2 weeks ago and it hasn't restarted since

1 out of 5 eggsGreat Stats/ Debilitating Problems / No support

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Bought this router because it was well rated on Cnet, has great stats, looks nice.

Cons: Despite great reviews/stats this line of ASUS hardware has major issues reported by a large portion of people who have bought this product. Laughable support for those who tried to fix through Asus. Drops connection through the day and night. I dropped connection within the first 30 minutes of me using it, disconnected me from the first game I tried to play on it. It caused high latency between 200 and 600% higher than plugging directly into the modem. I contact support and they told me to reset it to factor defaults, even though it was brand new! Did and made no difference. I updated the firmware same issue. Reset to defaults again still same issue. ASUS support is a waste of time. They make you wait for hours, only to say they don't what is causing this problem which a huge portion of people using this software are expereincing consistantly. Read the one star reviews for th 68U same issues, same lack of support, same frustrated customers. I do not recommend ASUS for any networking products.

4 out of 5 eggsAsus RT A66U

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Ok I have had this router for 2 weeks now and find it is faster than my last one purchased In 2009 (Linksys) I have more control over setting including bandwidth and channels which is very helpful. Heat does not seem to be an issue with my unit which is setup in vertical stand position not wall mounted or laying flat, has nice pleasant look with blue led's, I would purchase Asus again but select model carefully. It seems to be working great but with exceptions which I will list in Cons.

Cons: Here is why I took an egg off which is on Asus not Newegg. First forget the Quick Start Guide book except for hooking the unit up, after that put the install disk in and follow those instructions, much faster and more accurate, Second, it did drop all connection within 24 hours, had to restart and setup the unit second time. Since then it has worked with no issue. If anything changes I will try to post again, I took a lot of time researching routers and all seem to have one issue or another so find the one you think you can live with.

Other Thoughts: Suggest you do some research on this unit before purchasing so you know what to expect and how to better adjust the setting, it came in very handy when setting up this router. Foremost change the password for administrator (admin) its the only way to protect your system. Also find an app or program to locate other wireless systems in your area so you can adjust the channels to avoid interference, this will improve performance.

5 out of 5 eggsASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Way good!! Coverage, ease of configuring, complete host of cool options.....yes, the best I've ever dealt with. I've always used mac filtering. It's the most secure means of isolating your router from unwanted intrusion. This was the easiest mac filter configuring I've ever done. I'm just impressed at how Asus introduces and guides you through very user friendly steps.

Cons: All things known....there are none.

Other Thoughts: I don't know what all the fuss is about heat? You want a beast? You want broadband umph for multiple wireless platforms? I don't know about you, but I sweat when I work out. Put it in a well ventilated area....PRESTO!!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router, very configurable

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Fast, easy set-up. Great rates. Even better ASUSWRT is open-source, and ASUSWRT-merlin provides a number of critical enhancements to the base firmware. Most notably, ssh into the router and start-up script support. The latter capability lets you enter custom scripts for specific firewall configurations that aren't supported by the GUI. Example - in "nat-start" I add some iptables commands to forward a ssh connection only from an external known host. There are a number of other hook-points to customize configuation for the router enthusiast.

The Quality of Service (QoS) feature really seems to enhance on-line cloud gaming ( NVidia Shield).

Cons: Doesn't support WEP, a very old and unsecure wireless protocol (sort of the "rot13" of the wireless world). Which may force some an update for older wireless clients.

Other Thoughts: ASUSWRT-merlin seems much less drastic than re-loading with ddwrt or tomato. ASUSWRT is based on tomato. But ASUS makes sure the low-level radio drivers are tweaked the best they can. Rather than throw this out with a generic firmware build, ASUSWRT-merlin seems to just extend this work, tweeking the GUI and periphial software load, leaving the performance-critical kernel and drivers alone. Well done!

1 out of 5 eggs$200 nightlight

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: The blue LED lights are nice and mild, unlike many other devices.

Cons: The firmware this router shipped with was corrupt, It would restart after less that 5 min of uptime. Updating to the most recent f/w version extended the uptime to about 10min - once. Then the router rebooted and could not be connected to either using DHCP or static IP (the is all over the wired Eth connection).

Now the entire firmware partition is gone and the device can only be connected to in recovery mode with a static IP and flashing new f/w claims to be successful but after rebooting out of recovery mode (booting off the actual firmware partition) the router is once again unable to be connected to.

Other Thoughts: As I am writing this I have been on hold with ASUS support for...50min. - Here they are now.

And their support recommends: I unplug the router and try plugging it back in.... followed by "can't connect? Well, I don't know what else it could be." This is literally the only thing they could come up with.

I'd recommend looking for another company.

1 out of 5 eggsReboots every 20 minutes

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Looks good

Cons: First one rebooted every 20 minutes like clockwork. So, I did an RMA with Newegg and got a replacement. The replacement is doing the exact same thing. I have tried numerous things to fix this issue and nothing has worked. Tried doing a reset, upgrading to latest firmware, even older firmwares, disabling one-by-one every possible feature I can, numerous suggested tweaks I found on the Internet. Nothing has made a single difference with either of two routers.

Other Thoughts: Highly disastified with my $150 paper weight

1 out of 5 eggsDefective - Poor Service - Failed Repair

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Nice Packaging. Attractive Chassis, Extra long power cord.

Cons: Worthless if it won't work and they can't fix it.

My router has not worked since new. Well ... it works for 5-30 minutes, and then wireless signal disappears and never comes back. Shut it off and back on, you get another 5-30 minutes of wireless.

I understand equipment having a failure, and companies needing to repair / replace. However, what if that goes wrong?

Asus support is terrible. They take days to respond and give stupid FAQ references. What you don't know is after they've sent you a stupid reply, they close your case. They won't answer your responses, and then you have to open a whole new case - just to get another "canned" answer. It took MONTHS to get an RMA number.

It took OVER A MONTH to get it back from repair. What did they fix? Apparently nothing. Same Router (same serial number). Same problem.

Good Thing My 5 Year Old Tr3ndN3t Still works like new. I'm fighting all over again just to get them to take it back in to the repair center.

If you need to rely on a product, don't buy it from a company who can't stand behind it.
