1 out of 5 eggsBeen through 5 of these. They just die.

Pros: Great performance
Pretty good software
Easy to use
Nice wireless configuration, performance and range

Cons: This router is great, except that it consistently dies after just a few months. I went through1 DOA, then 4 more have died in a short period.

I have never experienced this. Usually I am looking for a new router before they just die. Done with Asus Routers. Too bad.

Manufacturer Response:

On behalf of ASUS we apologize for any inconvenience this issue has caused you but let me go ahead and further assist you. 2 out of 5 eggsDefective 5GHz band - RMA'd

Pros: Fast speeds on the 2.4GHz band. Accepts DD-WRT and ASUS-Merlin custom firmware. Default firmware is also easily attainable on their support website.

Newegg's RMA process has always been good for me.

Cons: I could not get the 5GHz band to work properly. It would constantly disconnect me, stop broadcasting the SSID, fail to connect. When it did finally connect on any device it was very slow (think B/s instead of MB/s).

Technical support is hard to understand and made me repeat everything that I had already told them I did. I don't mind that as much as most people that end up calling have little or no technical know how.

When the technician had no clue what was wrong they put me on hold and then hang up on me (i immediately went to the feedback prompt)

Other Thoughts: Keep in mind that I just received a defective product, and that just happens sometimes. Other than the defective 5GHz I think it would have been a good router.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Jordan,

I want to thank you for posting this review and I understand that you have an issue with the router. I apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused you but let me go ahead and further assist you. May I know your distance from the router when you are trying to connect to your 5GHz and what device? Do you also have the latest firmware for the router?

2 out of 5 eggsSomething happened

Pros: This device worked perfectly for years. Never had to be rebooted, never dropped packets, was easy to use and easier to configure.

Cons: Some point in the past 3 months it appears that my device and that of thousands of others started dropping packets and having generally unreliable connections. I did not update the firmware, which leads me to believe that there's something out there that may have infected all of our devices and caused some harm. That or there's a problem in the firmware that is date related.

Other Thoughts: Until they figure out the packet loss issue for all of us, I cannot recommend. However, with that resolved, this device was the best I've used.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Chad,

I want to thank you for posting this review and I understand that you have an issue with the router. I apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused you but let me go ahead and further assist you. 1 out of 5 eggsNot as advertised

Pros: It works, and I can get online and at least stream videos and play games.

Cons: -ASUS stock firmware isn't that great
-ASUS falsely advertised this router. Functions such as AiRadar does not exist at all.
-Cannot achieve 450 Mbps on 2.4 Ghz band regardless of settings. TurboQAM doesn't even exist on this router.
-Poor wireless performance, and no AC exclusive mode only or ability to select specific range of bands.

Other Thoughts: I've tried all sorts of firmwares, and settings, and nothing seems to work to get this to operate correctly as advertised. Even DD-WRT worked slightly better, but it's a work in progress.

I've yet to see how ASUS fixes this problem for me. I would like a different product or at least a refund so I can get a different brand that works as advertised. Paid too much for what I apparently didn't get.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Brandon,

I want to thank you for posting this review and I understand that you have an issue with the router's wireless performance. I apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused you but let me go ahead and further assist you. Please be advised that based on the unit's specification the unit is dual band it has 2.4 and 5 GHz frequency where you can use to connect your device. 2 out of 5 eggsDied in less than a year

Pros: Great feature set & good performance while it works.

Cons: Died about 11 months into service life. The WAN connection would drop over & over. At first, I thought it was FiOS, but after switching back to their router things were fine. I've tried to get this router working several times since then, but it will always die in a few minutes. About to chase down the warranty.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Darin,

Thank you for making an effort in posting this review and we appreciate it. I apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused you but let me go ahead and further assist you. Please be advised that all ASUS products have a warranty. May I ask the serial number (S/N) of your unit so I can check if we an proceed with RMA to fix the issue. Have to try to use the different ethernet cable to isolate the issue if the problem is WAN Port or the ethernet cable.

2 out of 5 eggsGot some bad ones

Pros: We purchased two of them in January, 2015. One went bad and was replaced in April, 2015, the other one went bad in June. Odd. Must have been a bad batch. Newegg replaced the first one and hopefully they will replace the second one.

Cons: Broke

Other Thoughts: Does ASUS need to improve quality control?

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: Worked well for almost 3 months. Has many options/features.

Cons: Every 2 - 3 minutes (lasting for 5 minutes) it looses connections for both wired and wireless.

Other Thoughts: Bought this router due to good reviews. Worked well for the first 3 months, but then it was loosing connection couple of weekends ago. Performed several instances of disconnecting and reconnecting router and modem power cable to see if it would work, but to no avail. On last attempt, router did not power up. RMA done on it. Bought a cheap router to hold me over and it works fine, but is slower than the Asus router. Out of pocket expense to ship it. Now for the real disappointing part, received the unit back, and it powers up, but still no connection. The document that came along indicates "Test ok". Something definitely wrong with the quality control.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Carmelo,

Thank your for your time in posting a review about our products. On behalf of ASUS, we would like to apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you. Let me assist you. Have you tried connecting the router directly to a computer (wired connection) this is to determine if all the connection was not working. 1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable.

Pros: Good UI, sleek design, good menu organization.

Cons: Randomly rejects passwords, forces modem disconnect on on reset.

Other Thoughts: Ordered an Asus router for a gaming household. Not worth the money and effort to set it up. Port fowarding requires a router reboot, disabling the entire house network for several minutes. Router randomly rejects passwords when accessing the management panel. Complete reset factory reset needed for every small problem with the router, because you can't access the web panel whenever there is a problem (and there is too often one). Router crashes when trying to upgrade firmware, needing another reset.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Sean,

Thank you for posting this review and for using one of our products. I want to apologize for the inconvenience it has caused you. I understand that you're not happy with the unit. 4 out of 5 eggsPretty good range

Pros: Great range and Speed Capability
A/C Connection is amazing no drops stable speeds
Router Menu is great (has many options needed for me)
Doesn't interfere with my wireless headset (Astro A50)

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Make sure you update this router and check frequently (RECOMMENDED) just for safety.

The menu could be better but its at its best.

2 out of 5 eggsNot good

Pros: Offers a lot of features, I guess

Cons: Wireless just doesn't work right. I used to use this as my main router starting about August 2013, and used wireless USB devices to connect my Linux desktop to it. The connections were always flaky but I wrote them off as Linux driver problems (Linux wireless support is not good). Then I finally got Google Fiber in March of 2015, and they provide their own wireless router. I decided to put the Asus device in wireless bridge mode, so I could run an ethernet cable from my desktop to this device and let it handle wireless. It still sucks. It will drop off connections all the time, even if I've just rebooted the thing. DNS resolutions in particular are terrible. You'll load half of a page, and the other half will be on a separate CDN domain, and the page just never loads. Youtube pages load but the video won't. I've tried both 2.4 and 5GHz, I've tried stock and Merlin firmwares, it's just junk.

Other Thoughts: I guess I'll be paying an electrician to fish cat5e into my office. I've already drilled through the living room wall once; I doubt my wife will give me another crack at it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Zachary,

I certainly understand your concern with your router. I would like to personally assist you on this matter. I want to know and clarify if your Google Fiber is 2in1 type of a product, what I mean, is it a model/router type of a product? If so, you have to contact the manufacturer of your product or to your provider to set it up in bridge mode. Please let me know how it goes. You can email me at customerloyalty@asus.com and place case # N150508180 in the subjet line for a reference.
