5 out of 5 eggsNext Gen Router - Awesome

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Easy set up for the novice, but oh so many options for the nerd inclined. Simple and easy FTP and Cloud setup, supports up to 6 networks, beamforming for great wifi connections (router on my 2nd floor, computer on 1st floor), traffic monitoring, etc. What else could you ask for?

Cons: The firmware upgrade had to be manually downloaded in order to install. The router couldn't contact the asus server to get it automatically.

5 out of 5 eggsAbsolute workhorse

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: The dual-band nature of the router will allow your older wireless devices to still have connectivity without competing for or interfering with your newer devices that can operate at the higher speeds. This is done via different antennae and SSID networks.

It can be flashed with DD-WRT to turn it into a $3000 router with full control over darn near any aspect you could ever want.

The router has 2 USB 2.0 ports if you want to set up NAS.

Cons: I don't know if this is a facet with the router, my house, or both, but the higher frequency spectrum has a shorter wavelength and thus is more susceptible to interference from walls and the like.

We have this in the front office of our house and the signal in the basement and opposite side of the house very poor for the 5GHz band. I wound up installing three wired WAPs in strategic areas to fill the dead spots.

The USB ports are only v2.0 so your NAS isn't as fast as it could be, but unless your NAS is flash-based, the bottleneck isn't going to be your network or USB.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for a solid, powerful wireless solution for your home or small office, this guy is more than adequate.

5 out of 5 eggsNoticable Performance Increase

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Simple Setup

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Had a Belkin N150 for maybe two years. Had 2 PC's, 1 android tablet, an Ipad Air, two Ipods, two wireless printers, DISH network, 2 cell phones, all on that one router. Needless to say, it was working HARD. Had to reboot it over and over. This ASUS is a monster. Internet is Faster and can handle anything I throw at it. Sad I spent the money, but it was a great invesment. Real eye opener!!

1 out of 5 eggsA Support Nightmare

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Their support for routers is a nightmare, im on my fifth call and still unable to get a solution to my non working router.
They send me to the Estore for warranty on a power supply, Estore doesnt cover warranties, they made me do 5 diferent tests on each call and they ask me to call back, i requested a supervisor and it never called me, im an IT manager so im fully qualified.
This happens to me to try to change verndor, i will stick with Linksys as i was very happy with them and they take care of the customers

Cons: fast if it works

1 out of 5 eggsFrequent Connection drops

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Great Range, great speeds, easy setup and configuration.

Cons: I have been having disconnect issues ever since I bought this router. Every ten to fifteen minutes the router reboots. It has been doing this since i received the router. I have updated to the newest version of firmware and this did not resolve the issue.

I bought a new modem along with my router so I though why not connect my old modem to the router to see if I would have the same results. The kept having the same issue. I then disconnected the router from my setup and ran straight from the modem. I had another older modem/router combo in storage so I pulled that device out and had no issues at all. I will be looking to return this router soon if I can not get a stable connection to my internet.

5 out of 5 eggsThe best router I've ever knowned

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: I’ve owned several routers over the years and the ASUS RT-AC66U is by far the best. My last router is a Linksys 3000 that I started having to reboot every day because the wireless would slow down. There was no firmware update so I just decided to upgrade.

Range: My house has 2 floors and a basement. The router is setup on the ground floor east wall. The Linksys signal was barely noticeable by the Roku player I have setup on the basement west wall. The Asus signal is strong enough to stream 720p video without buffering. The upstairs signal is 4-5 “bars” whereas the Linksys pulled 2-3.

Interface: I work in IT infrastructure professionally so I’m used to unfriendly interfaces and command line. While routers like the Linksys WRT have functional interfaces I don’t find them particularly user friendly. They get around this with WPS setup and guided wizards but after initial setup finding options can be a bit of a chore. The ASUS interface is wonderful.

Features:

QOS setup – there is a FAQ that walks you through setting up QOS so that you can game and torrent at the same time

Network Map – Clearly lays out your setup showing you client connections & media.

AirCloud – connect to your media anywhere. You can slot a USB stick to the router and access it from your tablet/smartphone using the app. It looks like you can even use WOL to wake your media PC and then access your content.

Small Business – There is a Firewall, VPN, and RADIUS server. I don’t do much in the networking space but all of these features seem like a great deal for a $150 commercial router.

Security: The router warns you if you security settings are weak and guides you through changing them. I was notified the admin password was set to default, my SMB was vulnerable and that there was a firmware update available.

Cons: I've only owned the router for 2 days so I don't have any complaints yet. If I do find something I'll update my review.

Other Thoughts: This is the first router I've owned that's worked exactly the way I've wanted it to. I really can't stress enough how nice it is to have an interface that make sense and directs you to the features you are looking for.

5 out of 5 eggsLoved it, While I had it

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Good Range, Great Speeds, Lots of control over network.

Cons: Only con I could come across was having Lightning striking my house.

Other Thoughts: Having to replace most of my electronic's right now including this router after lighting hit. Yes, it was hooked to a surge protector. But it was a Direct hit to my house. Killed my whole phone system, plus half my electronic's, took two days to get them to rewire it and my electrical box outside. Might go for the white one next time.

2 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Very good Router. Packed with more features than any anyone with short of a BA in networking would use. Very easy to setup. UI is user friendly made navigating quick and easy.

Cons: Asus still has some work to do in there QA department. Worked perfectly the first day with zero problems. Third day wireless dropped twice under load. By the 7th day both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz became utterly useless. Spent almost two days troubleshooting user error before i gave up.

Other Thoughts: All other features on this router works fine as long as the device is using an Ethernet cable. P.S i tried updating the firmware (twice) with no luck.
