1 out of 5 eggsFrequent Connection drops

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Great Range, great speeds, easy setup and configuration.

Cons: I have been having disconnect issues ever since I bought this router. Every ten to fifteen minutes the router reboots. It has been doing this since i received the router. I have updated to the newest version of firmware and this did not resolve the issue.

I bought a new modem along with my router so I though why not connect my old modem to the router to see if I would have the same results. The kept having the same issue. I then disconnected the router from my setup and ran straight from the modem. I had another older modem/router combo in storage so I pulled that device out and had no issues at all. I will be looking to return this router soon if I can not get a stable connection to my internet.

5 out of 5 eggsThe best router I've ever knowned

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: I’ve owned several routers over the years and the ASUS RT-AC66U is by far the best. My last router is a Linksys 3000 that I started having to reboot every day because the wireless would slow down. There was no firmware update so I just decided to upgrade.

Range: My house has 2 floors and a basement. The router is setup on the ground floor east wall. The Linksys signal was barely noticeable by the Roku player I have setup on the basement west wall. The Asus signal is strong enough to stream 720p video without buffering. The upstairs signal is 4-5 “bars” whereas the Linksys pulled 2-3.

Interface: I work in IT infrastructure professionally so I’m used to unfriendly interfaces and command line. While routers like the Linksys WRT have functional interfaces I don’t find them particularly user friendly. They get around this with WPS setup and guided wizards but after initial setup finding options can be a bit of a chore. The ASUS interface is wonderful.

Features:

QOS setup – there is a FAQ that walks you through setting up QOS so that you can game and torrent at the same time

Network Map – Clearly lays out your setup showing you client connections & media.

AirCloud – connect to your media anywhere. You can slot a USB stick to the router and access it from your tablet/smartphone using the app. It looks like you can even use WOL to wake your media PC and then access your content.

Small Business – There is a Firewall, VPN, and RADIUS server. I don’t do much in the networking space but all of these features seem like a great deal for a $150 commercial router.

Security: The router warns you if you security settings are weak and guides you through changing them. I was notified the admin password was set to default, my SMB was vulnerable and that there was a firmware update available.

Cons: I've only owned the router for 2 days so I don't have any complaints yet. If I do find something I'll update my review.

Other Thoughts: This is the first router I've owned that's worked exactly the way I've wanted it to. I really can't stress enough how nice it is to have an interface that make sense and directs you to the features you are looking for.

5 out of 5 eggsLoved it, While I had it

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Good Range, Great Speeds, Lots of control over network.

Cons: Only con I could come across was having Lightning striking my house.

Other Thoughts: Having to replace most of my electronic's right now including this router after lighting hit. Yes, it was hooked to a surge protector. But it was a Direct hit to my house. Killed my whole phone system, plus half my electronic's, took two days to get them to rewire it and my electrical box outside. Might go for the white one next time.

2 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Very good Router. Packed with more features than any anyone with short of a BA in networking would use. Very easy to setup. UI is user friendly made navigating quick and easy.

Cons: Asus still has some work to do in there QA department. Worked perfectly the first day with zero problems. Third day wireless dropped twice under load. By the 7th day both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz became utterly useless. Spent almost two days troubleshooting user error before i gave up.

Other Thoughts: All other features on this router works fine as long as the device is using an Ethernet cable. P.S i tried updating the firmware (twice) with no luck.

1 out of 5 eggsFrequent Connection drops

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Bells and Whistles ( If routers works for you )

Cons: Frequent Connection Drops (this is biggest issue)
Google yourself with "AC66U Disconnects", you will find lots of results and lot many people talking about it..

Other Thoughts: ( Myself Computer Engineer with quite decent knowledge of Networking/Routers)

I am facing disconnection issue around 10 months after purchasing this router. Behavior is something like this.. Connection will drop and resume within 10-15 seconds. and it will happen randomly and may be 3-5 times a day. It's quite annoying.. I have checked my cables, modem, provider and all I could do. Tested with old basic D-Link modem which didn't disconnect even once in 3 days. And I concluded that this is ASUS Router Hardware failure issue.

Talked to Asus Support.. and it is worst. They tell me to send the router first to them and them they will repair/exchange it and finally send me back. And I need to pay for one way shipping .. Worst part they don't do cross shipping or Advance RMA... So only way is to be without Internet for 10-15 days..!!
Is Asus living in stone age.. ? Internet is today's world is equally important for survival same as Water and Electricity. And Asus assumes to live without internet for 10-14 days. Do they expect customer to go Wal mart or Best Buy and then return the Router, while Router is sent to them for repair/exchange. Although I can do that as per store policy, but according to me it's unethical on my part doing that..

I have two serious complains against Asus :-

1. I believe ASUS is aware that this router has Disconnect issue as so many people are facing this issue.
2. Why they ask Customer to pay for shipping when Product fails under warranty ?
3. Why ASUS doesn't have cross ship, Advance RMA option available ? How they can expect customer to be without Internet for 10-15 days or do unethical by buying/returning another router.

2 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: None

Cons: Never got 5g to work.
The Internet is slow and drops constantly and only a restart will help. I thought at first it was the internet modem, but after testing it is the ASUS. Asus support is horrible and the worst that I've dealt with to date. Overall very unhappy with the product and support. Mine was a refurb.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsOK while it is working

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: -Not bad speed
-Did not fail within 6 month

Cons: -Failed after use of about 10 month
-Range was pretty bad. My 1 bed room apt is about 850sq Feet and few spots I have 0 connectivity. (My router was in the living room and I have dead spots in my room)

Other Thoughts: --It was really hard to pin point out why I was getting 10K+ pings. Unfortunately, on 07/03/2014, this router only works when I do light surfing; however, playing game such as DOTA, LOL, AION or any MMORPG, the ping goes between 100 ms - 99999ms. I am currently using backup router and will contact asus center wince it falls in the warranty period.

1 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: - Very fast, performance is great.
- User interface is friendly and well laid out.

Cons: - Not reliable.

Other Thoughts: I had two of these, and have been disappointed. The first, I bought, and was excited to receive. The router was quick and easy to setup, and the network was back up and running in less than a few minutes. However, after about a week and a half, the router's WAN/LAN ports failed to work properly. The modem would not be seen, and any physically connected devices would either not be able to access the router or even get a DHCP address. The router was reset, firmware upgraded, etc, and while it would work for about 5 minutes or so, it would then promptly fail.

I had NewEgg RMA the first one, and within 45 minutes of setting up the replacement device, the router began to do exactly the same thing. This time, resetting the router's settings did nothing for the situation. It immediately did not work.

I will have to applaud NewEgg, however, for treating me well, despite this. This product should not have failed this often, and as quickly as it did. Beware of this router, and do not buy. It works great when it does, but you're lucky if it works longer than a month, even at that.

I've never bought ASUS networking gear, and this has left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsBroken after 11 months

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Seemed Fast
Feature Rich
Nice UI - easy to update firmware

Cons: Randomly Reboots and can't reach tech support.
The router is downstairs and lots of dead spots upstairs.

Reboots clear the system log making it difficult to resolve problems.

Other Thoughts: I've made multiple phone calls into customer support and dealt with a long hold, provided my name and case number, waited 10 more minutes and then was randomly hung up on. The few words that customer support did say to me I really struggled to understand what they were saying. Either due to the accent or call quality.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Keeper,

Please provide me the case# that was given to you at the time of the call. If you still require further assistance, please contact us—the ASUS Customer Loyalty Team.
