The RT-N53 dual-band router is from the award-winning Black Diamond series of ASUS routers. The dual-band connectivity enables both 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless transmissions. 5GHz makes content streaming incredibly smooth, which is especially useful when watching videos through Web sites like hulu or other high-definition media sites. 2.4GHz offers compatibility with most devices, and both transmissions can run simultaneously to deliver essential compatibility with performance. Featuring an exclusive built-in 2 internal antenna, the RT-N53 features Ai Radar, for omnidirectional circular coverage as opposed to a limiting horizontal signal for optimal connectivity wherever the router is placed, especially useful for multi-level houses or buildings.

With multi user support up to five SSIDs, connect up to four wireless networks on 2.4GHz and one wireless network on 5GHz. Customize each user's bandwidth and access privileges for each network. The RT-N53 router also features robust parental controls for you to set time and Web site access for each SSID. Product setup is CD free and quick. The Graphical User Interface (GUI) to customize settings is intuitive for users at any level. Boasting a standalone wall-mountable design, the RT-N53 router has a unique lattice glossy style that suits any room or office with a modern appeal.

  • newegg Dual-band Connection for Lag-free Entertainment The RT-N53 doubles your wireless performance and bandwidth with simultaneous 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, with speeds up to 300Mbps concurrently. While basic internet applications like browsing or file downloading can occur in 2.4GHz, wireless HD content streaming takes place in the 5GHz band at the same time, so both achieve optimized speeds and you get to enjoy smooth, buffer-free HD content streaming.
  • newegg Optimal connections with two internal antennas The RT-N53 features two exclusive internal antennas with Ai Radar omnidirectional coverage which provides optimal connections wherever your device is placed.
  • newegg Multi User Support With multi user support up to five SSIDs, the RT-N53 can provide one wireless network on 5GHz and 4 wireless networks over the 2.4GHz band, which provides separated connection priorities and access rights. For example, High priority and both network (private and Internet) access are perfect for managers, while middle priority and private network work great for staff, and low priority and internet access only for friends and guests. Protect computers from unauthorized access, hacking and virus attacks.
  • newegg Plug-n-surf and Hassle-free Management ASUS QIS and EZ UI offer you an intuitive router setup without reading manuals. Open your browser, then the QIS wizard will guide you to quickly connect to the Internet, regardless of what OS you use. The intuitive user interface provides a graphical network map, making wireless setup, QoS and client management clear and simple.
  • newegg Clever Wall-mount design The clever wall-mount design allows you to mount it onto the wall providing great convenience for your cleanup (mounting kit sold separately).

1 out of 5 eggsRefurbished item is horrid

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Melted upon firmware update. Cheap version of a brick.

Other Thoughts: I've had many personal routers, and manage hundreds of access points, routers, switches, etc. at work on a daily basis. I know how these things work. This little guy bricked before I could say "what?" Unfortunately I couldn't find the original packaging so was not allowed an RMA (I think the wife recycled it when I wasn't looking). So here's the lesson - save you packing material. Although in this case you'd end up with a net of pocket change since shippings costs almost as much as you pay for it...

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible

Pros: It was cheap

Cons: It needs reboots frequently, new firmware made response times very unstable. Would not advocate the purchase.

Other Thoughts: It's cheap but the one I have doesn't work reliably. The features and GUI look nice but it just didn't deliver on performance or reliability. Updated firmware made the problem worse and the unit had to be downgraded. I ended up turning it off after fighting with it for a few months, saved my money and bought something else.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst buy ever

Pros: Cheap.
Easy to install and administer.

Cons: Unreliable. You will have to re-boot at least 10 times a day.
5g utter waste. Works only within 5 feet. The light is on but transmission.

Other Thoughts: Please do not waste your money on this. I wish I could give 0 eggs.

1 out of 5 eggs5GHz VERY unstable; 5Ghz network simply disappears

Pros: Price, if it worked. Ability to take Tomato firmware, extensive features associated w/ that firmware.
Wired and 2.4Ghz connections are fine

Cons: There was a slight hiccup in flashing to the most recent ASUS firmware, so I flashed the latest version of Tomato (look for the RT-N53 version) using the ASUS Recovery Utility--it's no longer on the Asus website, so you have to dig around for it.

I had everything set up very well, and I got 40% faster transmission rates using the 5Ghz band since there was so much interference from neighbors. However, after two days, the 5G wireless network would disappear; the SSID would stop being broadcasted, I couldn't manually connect to the network, all while the router said everything was fine.
Even restarts were no use--the 5Ghz network would appear briefly, but I was not able to connect to it.

1 out of 5 eggsWeak, not durable

Pros: Cheap. Can put MAC address filter on specific band.

Cons: Varying levels of strength depending upon location in a home. Compared to other routers I've owned/now own, this one was a little weak,

Other Thoughts: Bricked on the first attempted upgrade. Unrecoverable. Since my spouse had efficiently already recycled the shipping materials, could not RMA. I've had all other routers expensive to cheap upgrade without an issue, this was the first time something bricked on me.

1 out of 5 eggsVery Unstable; avoid at all cost

Pros: Supports 5GHz, works w/ Tomato firmare, and cheap

Cons: Very unstable. I have to restart it at least once a day. It feels like a bad hardware problem (at least on the ones I got). Please avoid unless you want to try your luck or deal with the hassle.

3 out of 5 eggsIt Dose Work

Pros: The wired section worked well and seemed to be fast enough for video streaming. I installed tomato on it through trial & error.

Cons: The unit crashed the 5ghz section running the stock firmware after a few hours. Also no ddwrt version for this hardware. After installing tomato i was running for a few days with no crashes but the wireless speed was really slow maybe for a average wireless G unit. I read several reviews on all routers and it seems the failure rate is about 50% and to top it off re-certified units appear to be quick tested to see if they turn on because this is my second re-certified asus product that works but most certainly does not operate at anything close to what it should do. I replaced it with another brand a new one this time that is working with acceptable speed so far.

Other Thoughts: Installing tomato i had to plug a cable into to the wan port to get to the recovery connection to install tomato. Also tomato has usb port options enabled by default and if you uncheck them you will not have a 5gig band on the wireless. Maybe that is the speed problem as other controls may not be what they are labeled as,so maybe i will play with it someday. Also my unit was a newer version than the original. Asus RT-N53 A1, Broadcom BCM5357 chip rev 2 pkg 8, CPU Freq 500MHz, Flash Size 8MB.

4 out of 5 eggsNot a bad cheap router

Pros: Nice cheap dual band router. Loaded tomato firmware on it immediately and it runs way better than stock Asus firmware. Also easily wall mountable

Cons: Like the other reviews say it still had the previous owners information still on the router. 5 ghz band didnt work on the stock asus firmware even after updates and nvram reset. Also no gigabit ethernet

Other Thoughts: Got it for $13.50 after rebate. With tomato firmware this thing runs pretty well and is super customizable. Took off a star because it had the previous owners information on it still.

2 out of 5 eggslow signal quality but cheap

Pros: Cheap, small, wall mountable, easy to setup (after doing factory reset)

Cons: default admin password didn't work, had to do factory reset with button

signal quality (and as a result bandwidth) sucks I will only go for routers without PCB antennas in the future
