1 out of 5 eggsWorst Router I've owned

Pros: Very rarely it can perform quickly, when it's fast, it's fast.

Cons: This router must be defective hardware because it is very sproadic. Even with firmware updates, the router continues to perform slower than any other router I've previously owned. The range was so short that I had to add an additional access point to even have low coverage in my medium sized house. The worst problem is how inconsistent my speeds have been. Very rarely, it can be quick, but 95% of the time the rotuer starts out with a burst, then dies almost instantly to the point where it feels like a dial up connection on all of my devicies. I suffered with this router for several months and decided to try another (cheaper) brand router to compare and I can't believe the difference. I want to like this Asus router, but I just can't given the poor performance. I'm hoping it's due to defective harware, but I will never know since I'm outside of my 30 day warranty. I will not purchase another high priced Asus router again.

2 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Fast when working. Firmware is pretty good: easy to use and configurable

Cons: Flaky! The first one died in just over a year. It's replacement lasted less than a few days before the 5GHz radio died.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst Router Ever so far

Pros: Interface is clean, Merlin Firmware is promising

Cons: Cannot walk more than 10 feet from the router and loose 2.4ghz signalNo 5Ghz signal after 7 feet. My iPhone does not see the SSID.

Other Thoughts: Possibly bad router, will reorder another one.

5 out of 5 eggsOnce reconfigured, great router

Pros: Looks great, great GUI. It came in "rescue mode" and I needed to flash the latest firmware, but since doing so it has been great.

Cons: Came in "rescue mode" which took me a while to troubleshoot, but works 100% now.

1 out of 5 eggsNon-working "refurbished" router

Pros: Looks nice.

Cons: Mine did not work straight out of the box. I couldn't get an IP address when hard-wired to the router. I went through the manual, followed instructions step by step, even connected straight to the modem to download the router-specific software from ASUS, but it was to no avail.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

If you received a refurbished router it may still have the settings from the previous user. Please reset the settings back to factory default to ensure that you set up the router as if it was new in the box. While the router is powered on, press and hold the Reset button (looks like this: >o<). The Power LED will begin to blink rapidly. Release the Reset button and let the router reboot. When you connect to it again via ethernet, you should be able to access the GUI by going to a web browser and entering in The default login and password is admin/admin. When you log in, you should be prompted to go through the Quick Internet Setup to establish an Internet connection and to set up your wireless networks.

If you continue to have problems, please contact me at so that I may try to help you.

4 out of 5 eggsrefurb asus rt ac66u

Pros: form factor
external antennae x 3 for the 5mhz
ez to tweak stock firmware but limited QoS tweak for guest settings.
fast wifi, real fast. read on...

Cons: stock firmware is weak but im not going to upload 3rd party firmware.
as far as i cant throttle or limit bandwidth guest settings. also as far as i cant purge or client dump the guests on a set timeout unless you set up a guest network at the time they need to join your you need to be home, in real time, go into setup, create a new guest password and then set up a timer for the guest client dump. My wife and children have no interest in this. they just want the wifi to work (you know what i mean)
again....ive been playing around with the guest settings and QoS but i cant find a work around. asus is getting back to me...perhaps im missing something or newer firmware can handle this later?

Other Thoughts: OK....Comcast doubled their BLAST internet to 50 mbps up/ 10 mbps down. the docsis 2.0 modem i lease from them could not handle it so i had them give me a new docsis 3.0 modem, my linksys wrt54gv2 was now my speed bump so i purchased this refurbished asus rt ac66u.
here is what i was getting with d3 modem + old wrt54gv2....23 up/6 down wifi, 70 up/10 down wired. i expected 50-ish wifi up not 23 up with the wrt54gv2. BUT 70 up, wired!? when comcast has me throttled at 50/10? i knew i had some untapped speed and i wanted it! AND it was time for a guest setting, old wrt54gv2 no guest setting.
OK....d3 modem + asus rt ac66u....103 up/14 down wifi on both 2.4 and 5! again im throttled to 50/10 (called to make sure) so....yes im flying with this router!
wired speed is much the same as wifi.
the firmware is so-so, Guest settings, i was hoping to be able to limit bandwidth and have a set time-out client dump, say 12 hours or so. my children all have wifi enabled friends (you know what i mean) i figured 12 hours would be ok for a sleep over or study group.
like i said i have to be home to set up a new guest portal, makeup a password, check box no server/file share and then set up a timer. SO i have to be home to do this.
i would like to have a guest setup that always dumps clients every 12 hours, limit bandwidth to 25mbps up/5 down and client dumps when out of range (when they leave to go home)
as far as i cant be done. i logged in using the guest password, connected and left the house to get out of range for a hour or so, when i got back, i was still on the guest network. so no out of range client dump.

so its a speed racer but i hope to see better firmware soon.
