5 out of 5 eggsWorks great for me!

Pros: Got this router more than a year ago, it extended range way past the pool cage. All and all super range boost without having to use unreliable range extenders. Can stream media in any part of the house without any issues. I do not experience issues that other users have expressed.

Cons: Had to update firmware when first got it?

Other Thoughts: I know it's roll of the dice getting a refurb product. This one works great for me.

5 out of 5 eggsNo issues yet (used Shibby Tomato firmware)

Pros: "Just works" for me, post alternative firmware change of course

Cons: None so far - no issues at all

Other Thoughts: Keep in mind that I spent about 15 minutes using the old firmware and I believe it was in an "emergency mode" of some kind. I 30/30/30'd it right away to get it into a default setup, then quickly upgraded to Shibby Tomato firmware and have had no issues (had this for about two weeks now).

Wanted to review for anyone considering this same refurb as I haven't had any issues - but again I had no plans to use the default firmware.

2 out of 5 eggsDissapointed with this router

Pros: Looks pretty nifty and the price was great as a refurb. ASUS has gotten good reviews for their routers, so everything looks good....

Cons: It did not play well with my other hardware, dropped the WiFi signal and required frequent (every 60 minutes) re-booting. I bought the ASUS RT-AC66U as a Newegg Refurb. It arrived in a worn original box without the install media or any documentation, which is all available on the ASUS website, so no problemo. The setup utility appeared fairly intuitive but the router failed to recognize my WiFi HP CP1525 Laserjet printer and this required setup via ethernet cable. After several days of trying to setup, I came to the conclusion that the unit that I had was a dud and returned it to Newegg. I generally have had no problems when purchasing refurbished or "open box" items in the past but this proved to be an outlier to that theory and my experience was not a happy one.

Other Thoughts: I returned this unit and replaced it with a NIB ASUS RT-AC68U wireless router. The replacement new ASUS AC1900 router took me less than 30 minutes to set up and configure and has maintained a constant, strong and steady signal throughout my house. I would recommend the RT-AC68U over the AC66U

1 out of 5 eggsRectifiable Garbage

Pros: Fast when it works...see "Cons".

Cons: Drops constantly. It worked for about 4 months and then started dropping every 20-30 minutes. I thought it was other things on my network or the cable modem. Cable company came out and tested everything...no problems. I reset the router to factory specs and can't get past the setup page without it dropping. I'm gonna drop kick this thing back to China.

Other Thoughts: Buy the extended warranty...you'll need it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I'm sorry to hear that you are having issues with your router. Please let me help with it. Is it running the latest firmware 3.0.0.4.378.4850? If so, have you checked your log to see what it says about the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz to see if there is an issue or if there is signs the firmware wasn't loaded properly during the update? Have you tried changing the channel bandwidth of the router to 40 MHz or 80 MHz and control channel to 1,6 or 11? Usually, reconfiguring the wireless setup will re-established internet connection. If the problem persists, the WLAN driver or network services was corrupted, resetting the system to factory settings should resolve internet connection issue. Kindly email me at customerloyalty@asus.com and place case # N150450334 in the subject line for a reference.

Best regards,
Manuel

1 out of 5 eggsWorst Router I've owned

Pros: Very rarely it can perform quickly, when it's fast, it's fast.

Cons: This router must be defective hardware because it is very sproadic. Even with firmware updates, the router continues to perform slower than any other router I've previously owned. The range was so short that I had to add an additional access point to even have low coverage in my medium sized house. The worst problem is how inconsistent my speeds have been. Very rarely, it can be quick, but 95% of the time the rotuer starts out with a burst, then dies almost instantly to the point where it feels like a dial up connection on all of my devicies. I suffered with this router for several months and decided to try another (cheaper) brand router to compare and I can't believe the difference. I want to like this Asus router, but I just can't given the poor performance. I'm hoping it's due to defective harware, but I will never know since I'm outside of my 30 day warranty. I will not purchase another high priced Asus router again.

2 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Fast when working. Firmware is pretty good: easy to use and configurable

Cons: Flaky! The first one died in just over a year. It's replacement lasted less than a few days before the 5GHz radio died.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst Router Ever so far

Pros: Interface is clean, Merlin Firmware is promising

Cons: Cannot walk more than 10 feet from the router and loose 2.4ghz signalNo 5Ghz signal after 7 feet. My iPhone does not see the SSID.

Other Thoughts: Possibly bad router, will reorder another one.

5 out of 5 eggsOnce reconfigured, great router

Pros: Looks great, great GUI. It came in "rescue mode" and I needed to flash the latest firmware, but since doing so it has been great.

Cons: Came in "rescue mode" which took me a while to troubleshoot, but works 100% now.
