1 out of 5 eggsGood fast router that did not last

Pros: It is easy to setup
Has a good stable connection
Affordable

Cons: Rang is equal to my old Linksys router
Did not last long

Other Thoughts: I purchased it in May 2014, it lasted only 6 months. I can't get the Asus self RMA site to work, which is really frustrating. Asus needs to spend more on building a better customer support site.

5 out of 5 eggsWorked Great for Me

Pros: The unit is small but the antenna is big! Decent coverage for an entry level router. The firmware interface is simple and straight forward.

Cons: Nothing... so far.

Other Thoughts: I recently set this up for a customer. I tried two different cisco/linksys routers, and his laptop just wouldn't see them at all (Lenovo). Installed this router and the laptop saw it right away and connected no problem. He is getting full speed from his ISP (30 Mbps), so it's all good.
This is a quality entry level router with many features you would only get in a more expensive router, but don't expect it to cover a large house though.
As a bonus I would say it is a pleasant looking unit.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat with Tomato

Pros: Cheap, works well enough for a budget router.

Cons: Range not as good as expected.

Other Thoughts: I'm still using my Linksys 54GL with Tomato and have tried a few newer N budget routers in an attempt to "upgrade" from Wireless G. This Asus was my latest experiment, and it is a nice router using the latest Shibby Tomato build. Specifically, I like being able to cap per client bandwidth at a particular kbps rate since we are on slower DSL. I also wanted to setup a VLAN for guest account. This router does all of this perfectly with Tomato. I did not try the oem firmware so cannot comment on it's capabilities.

I went back to my 54GL mainly due to the limited range on this router. It has a single antenna, so I probably should not have expect the same range as my dual antenna router. Even cranking up the transmit power (tomato allows this) did not help much in our 3200 sq. ft. single story home, where some bedrooms simply did not get enough signal to use the internet on wireless (Windows often displayed 1mbps throughput but browser would not open web pages). If you are trying to upgrade on a really small budget, this router is a great choice if range is not a concern.

3 out of 5 eggsSome Good, Some Bad

Pros: Easy Setup
Good design

Cons: Reliability

Other Thoughts: I've purchased two of these routers to serve as APs. Setup for both was a breeze and changing them over from router to AP was simply clicking a button.

One has been very reliable, never dropping a connection or causing any issue. The second has been taken offline permanently after requiring a reboot every few days. Each AP was set on a different channel with the same SSID, but the device would seemingly lose all contact with the router and outside world while still making connections to wireless devices in the house.

I will replace the unit with another ASUS device, but I'll be going with a newer one with more speed and better reliability.

5 out of 5 eggsNewEgg is the best

Pros: If NewEgg ships any faster, they'll have to put it through a time warp.

Cons: Not as happy with Asus Router as I have been with other Asus products.

Other Thoughts: Ordered the Asus router because my experience with other Asus products, mostly motherboards, has been very positive. I'm a little disappointed that the router lacks certain diagnostic features, using a "wizard" instead.

4 out of 5 eggs20 dollar shot caller

Pros: Very affordable
tomato shibby

Cons: external antenna is not detachable

Other Thoughts: if this thing came with a detachable external antenna it would absolutely be my go to router. the range is crummy compared to my ac56u that has internal antennas.

i'm currently using it as a bridge

i was so turned off by other people's comments about how hard it was to get the rebate that i decided i would try for it but not that hard. lo and behold, when i go to the asus website to fill out rebate info i sent in an infinite loop of filling out forms and the next page not loading correctly causing me to have to restart the whole process. ultimately i spent 15 mins on it and decided it wasn't worth my time.

TLDR: if you buy this, don't bank on the rebate process being simple. or working at all.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine, cost less than some meals.

Pros: Stock firmware working fine for me, but it runs DD-WRT if you prefer. I got a great deal on this and it cost less than a meal in a chain restaurant.

Stock firmware is full featured and will do what 99% of the world wants a router to do. Setup was easy and would be even for a novice. I don't ever have range issues, so I can't help you there.

Cons: ASUS didn't pay me to buy this.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat value

Pros: Inexpensive router, easy to use settings, and so far firmware is being maintained (ASUS has put out 4 updates in the last 2 years).

Cons: Only broadcasts on the already overcrowded 2.4GHz frequency. Simplicity of device can count against it if your needs are more complicated than a simple home wireless setup.

Other Thoughts: This is a good router for the price. I would spend extra for a dual band WIFI radio if I was experiencing any significant interference.

1 out of 5 eggsRouter firmware nightmare

Pros: Not able to observe

Cons: Booted up the router and immediately forced into the ASUS Easy Setup screens. This is great for the tech adverse, but there ought to be an option/link to regular configuration for the more adept. Needless to say, I obliged and clicked through the Easy Setup which constantly stalled out. In the end Easy Setup failed to "automatically" configure itself. When I was finally at the end of it I was able to access the standard setup screens. There the firmware refused to save or update configurations that I programmed (SSID change, encryption etc), instead it kept displaying its "processing" popup screen. Firmware continued to remain unresponsive but could be accessed using another Web GUI page. I thought maybe the firmware was faulty, so I went to ASUS website for the latest firmware and also the Asus Firmware Restoration tool. Following their exact instructions I loaded the latest firmware update. Now the router refuses to even boot into recovery mood. I think there is something inherently wrong with the router's firmware process.

Other Thoughts: Prior to this router, Asus products have always been perfectly on par with what it's expected to do. I'm not sure if this router is an outlier or an ominous telling of the future for Asus products but I would tread lightly with ASUS in the future.

1 out of 5 eggsnever worked with my setup

Pros: unit looks new. same as bought from store.

Cons: easy setup never worked for me, connected router LAN to laptop and dsl, does not detect automatic Internet settings. get error 404. tried to change to AP mode. same problem. tried to reset router. upgrade software. no luck.
Bought this mainly from reviews about Automatic CD less setup. I guess that only works for some.
