Modern Design. Exceptional Speed. Versatile Innovation.

Impossibly thin with a glossy black patterned finish, the ASUS dual band gigabit wireless-N RT-N56U router truly cuts the edge of innovation with powerful features that deliver the latest in networking capabilities. Equipped with exceptional hardware Network Address Translation (NAT), this one-of-a-kind router delivers up to 1000Mbps throughput that's up to five times faster than conventional gigabit routers.* The RT-N56U is like having two routers in one. And with up to 300,000 sessions, 20 times the amount of conventional routers, you have sufficient headroom for additional clients and devices without buying an additional router.

The RT-N56U also provides users with incredible versatility. Plugging in a USB All-in-One printer, enables easy sharing between printer and scanner functions for all networked PCs. Download Master BitTorrent client shifts download duties from the PC directly to the router-attached storage via the two onboard USB ports. For even more convenience, ASUS AiDisk transforms a connected USB device into an FTP server for remote transfers. The RT-N56U was designed with ease-of use in mind. With a CD-free, plug-and-play setup, the RT-N56U gets you up and running to let you effortlessly optimize bandwidth for gaming, video calls, downloading or whatever else you choose.

* Maximum wireless signal rate derived from IEEE Standard 802.11g and draft 802.11n specifications. Actual data throughput will vary. Network conditions and environmental factors, including volume of network traffic, buildings materials and construction, and network overhead, lower actual data throughput rate. Environmental factors will adversely affect wireless signal range. Wireless range and speed rates are relative performance measurements based on the wireless range and speed rates of a standard Wireless G product. Maximum throughput based on draft 802.11n devices.

  • newegg Dual-Band Access Double your wireless performance and bandwidth with simultaneous 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands speed up to 300Mbps concurrently. While basic internet applications like browsing or file downloading can occur in 2.4GHz, wireless HD content streaming takes place in the super-fast 5GHz band at the same time, so both achieve optimized speeds and you enjoy smooth, buffer-free HD content streaming.
  • newegg Hardware NAT Equipped with a capable hardware NAT acceleration engine and built-in Gigabit Ethernet, it gives you full Gigabit internet performance, making its WAN to LAN throughput up to 2-5 times that of traditional software-based NAT Gigabit routers.
  • newegg 300,000 Data Sessions Support for a massive data pipeline of up to 300,000 data sessions means the RT-N56U has around 20 times the networking capacity of other high session routers, so multiple data transfer jobs don’t slow down even during heavy load.
  • newegg Ai Radar This unique and efficient design drastically increases wireless signal coverage and quality without increasing power consumption. It intelligently adapts beam patterns to local conditions to enable higher-gain directional signal emulation. 1 out of 5 eggsDead, after 3 month in home light use.

Pros: None

Cons: Dead, after 3 month in home light use. Changed firmware to newest and back to oldest didn't fix the problem. Internet speed is less than dial Up in 90's was. Not mb/s but kb/s then stops at all.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor life span!!!

Pros: Operated fairly good when it worked! Cheep price!

Cons: Average life of the two I purchased was less than 6 months!! Had to follow up phone call to get company to honor rebate!

Other Thoughts: Wast of time and money, find something else!

2 out of 5 eggsNot impressed

Pros: Cost

Cons: The manufacturer advertises this device to be compatible with DD-WRT. However, they do not say what version was tested as working with it. The Asus tech support was a waste of an hour of my time. There is no supported version of DD-WRT listed as working. Many versions have been tried, but none seem to be 100% working. I have a mega version working, but downstream speeds are half of the upstream speed. I have tried to make this work correctly, but no success. I am running an ancient Linksys WGR54xxx that blows this thing away. It is a paperweight to me, as I am not going to waste any more time on it. I would avoid this unit if you plan on running DD-WRT.

Other Thoughts: Asus support is horrible.

4 out of 5 eggsBasic but does the job.

Pros: -Inexpensive, yet well built.
-Easy to configure but also has options for advanced users.
-Small footprint.
-Has status lights that actually work.

Cons: -Limited range and speed.
-Doesn't support Merlin firmware.
-Runs hot like most Asus routers.

Other Thoughts: This is a great router for people with small environments or requirements. It's inexpensive, well made, easy to configure and unlike so many other routers these days, still has lights to make it easy to troubleshoot. If you want an Asus router to run the excellent Merlin firmware, you'll need a higher end model and like many Asus routers, this runs hot so you don't want to keep it in a cramped space. Other than that though, this is a great entry level router at a great price.

5 out of 5 eggsUnbelievable value

Pros: $10 easy setup. No Brainer for kid to create her own personal wifi network at college from an ethernet connection. It's amazingly fast and easy setup.

Cons: No USB port. But for $10 no big deal.

3 out of 5 eggsWireless N is slow

Pros: Low price, (after rebate)

Cons: Rebate. Wireless N speed is very slow, varies from 8 to 15 Mb/sec with WinXP. I don't know if this is because of the router or the network adapter. I was surprised because both are Asus.

Other Thoughts: 802.11G speeds are good, about 20Mb/sec. I had to configure the router for WiFi legacy mode to get the good speed with WinXP, which precludes use of 802.11N. I have decided to keep this router because it work a lot better the the TP-Link router that I first ordered. I wish my old Buffalo router still worked. 802.11G speed was good with Linux, even without the legacy setting. I could not try 802.11N with Linux because the Asus adapter does not have a driver for kernel 3.x

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Mike,

I want to thank you for posting this review and I understand that you have an issue with your router. We apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused you but let me go ahead and further assist you. Was the router's firmware updated? how far are you from the router when you are trying to connect wirelessly?

1 out of 5 eggsDo Not Buy

Pros: None

Cons: I have never gotten this unit to work. Says to plug into laptop and modem then just launch the web browser to setup. When I hooked it up and launched a web browser, it gave me a blank web page. I connected thru the default IP and setup that way and it still wouldnt work. Pass on this device.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Jeff,

Thank your for your time in posting a review about our products. On behalf of ASUS, we would like to apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you. Since you mentioned that it is giving you a blank webpage have you tried connecting the laptop directly to the modem to see if there is a connection and also was there a power when you plug in the router? For further assistance, please email me at customerloyalty@asus.com and place the case #N150704739 in the subject line for a reference.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat for the price

Pros: Plugged in and has been running for months with no issues. The interface is fine and things are simple to set up. Has DDNS and VPN functionality built in, which is a huge plus. Was going to flash firmware to get those features, but no need. After doing a scan to find the optimal wireless channel for my area, the range is terrific.

The unit also has a pretty slim profile and is nice looking. It blends in well behind my tv.

Cons: Nothing really. Two antennas and a USB port to run a print server would be cool, but I'm not about to complain at this price point.
