2 out of 5 eggsEntry Level Router

Pros: Got it on sale, good price.

Pretty strong signal and decent range.

Has a lot of potentials given the features that it supports.

Cons: Radio on channel 6 died in 6 months. Changing to other channels (1 or 11) works fine. I decided to send it back to ASUS for repair, given the 2-year warranty it has.

I struggle to flash the DD-WRT firmware. Unfortunately, it does not work with the hardware version. (DD-WRT only supports the original RT-N12 and the B and C revisions.) The only thing is that the typical 30-30-30 reset would allow the router to enter into rescue mode so that you can re-flash it back to official ASUS firmware. At least you can always get back to factory firmware, to which it should be a pro.

Other Thoughts: I didn't pay too much attention to the spec due to the limited time sale. I thought it should have latest spec since it is a later model. Turns out it only has 2.4GHz band and the wired line is only 100baseT. In all considerations, it is an entry level wireless router. Don't expect 5GHz band or 1000bps wired connections. So it really should be used at the border right after the ISP gateway. If the router is used for networking among devices/computers (such as a NAS) within your home/work, it will become the bandwidth bottleneck.

The documentation and package is very poor as it does not clearly state the D revision. (Only the back of the router mentions rev. D.) When I first went to ASUS web site and look for RT-N12 based on the packaging (and menu), I found info about original version, and all the firmware downloads won't apply to this. The reference to rev. D was not very clear. It is sometimes referred to as RT-N12 D or RT_N12D. Only Newegg uses RT-N12/D1. So finding the relevant information is a painful exercise.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router, great price

Pros: Needed an upgrade from an ancient G router, this definitely did the trick. Even with many devices connected no real slowdowns detected. Easy to set up and has a wide range of settings when accessed. Great buy.

Cons: Absolutely none.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Basic Router

Pros: Good range. Easy to configure. Runs cool. Inexpensive, got this at a local B&M for 25 bucks after MIR.

Cons: Bright activity lights (so bright you cannot read the legend). Short power cord. Both minor flaws.

Other Thoughts: I use this for a ethernet based home office, and as a wifi connection to a laptop, a tablet, and sometimes my phone. I get up to 130Mbps wireless connections when I am in the same room as the router, in the rest of the house I get between 30Mbps and 65Mbps. This is through a couple of walls. Better than the 2wire600 it replaced. Also, my VOIP client runs flawlessly.
So many choices in this category, dual band, AC, etc. When it came down to it, my wireless clients really determined what I bought. All my wireless devices are N only, and only my phone supports 5Ghz. So why spend all the money on a brute of as router?

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: Nothing

Cons: Wireless speeds terrible. Had very steady wired connection speed to it but the wifi speed was very low even when 1ft from the router. Roomates couldn't play xbox live on it with such bad speed. Device bricked after firmware update. Bought to replace a old dual n band linksys that needs resetting every few days, back to using that for now.

5 out of 5 eggsAsus Takes Over

Pros: Price
Quality
Functionality
Versatility

Asus is taking over the wireless hardware market, especially since Linksys sold out. As the new king, they continue to produce 5 star hardware that blows away competitors and smashes their prices.

Cons: None notable.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Router

Pros: Easy interface. I updated this router to the latest Asus software with no problems. The wireless signal seems to be great in all rooms of my 2700sf single level home. Has been up for 2 weeks without any drops. I like the flexibility of the software interface. Like that it runs cool. Great price for a great router.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: For me, I like a router that is easy and reliable with good wireless coverage. This router suits me just fine with a little tweaking.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for the price

Pros: I bought this as an extender. My cable company's Ubee modem wireless range drops off in certain parts of the house. I plugged this in and configured it within minutes. It's been working fine ever since. I haven't had to reboot it yet.

Cons: The range doesn't seem as good as the cable modem, which is ok for me, since this is acting as an extender. The signal drops off around 25 ft. It shows up fine, but the connection is slow. I guess I expected better range from an Asus product.

Other Thoughts: It's a good, solid modem and I'd recommend it to a friend.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Speed

Pros: Easy upgrade for previous router, very fast WiFi speeds and very stable.
Good Range even through two walls. ASUS delivers great results once again!
Browser based setup screen is clear and easy to understand. Setup completed in just a few minutes. ASUS supports advanced security settings for WiFi

Cons: Some people like vertical routers to save on desk space. This horizontal unit works well, and only gets slightly warm.

Other Thoughts: makes ipads even 'zippier' ! Works great with smart phones, tablets, notebooks, netbooks, and desktops.

4 out of 5 eggsFound my issue

Pros: There are tons of features on this. The setup really is easy but that's only if you don't expect much as far as performance. I had terrible through put on this until I decided to try something that I read on a message board. Although it was disabled I enabled the QOS setting and set it to a ridiculously high setting. Once I adjusted the speeds I had a way better experience.

Cons: Router appears to be governed by the QOS settings by default.
