5 out of 5 eggsworks great, filled my weak spots

Pros: Bought this is augment my ASUS RT-N65R router. My 5Ghz signal was really weak at the far end of the house having to pass through a floor and two walls. I named the SSIDs the same as my RT-N65U and the receiver picks the best signal. Went from barely a bar (20Mbs) to four bars (144Mbs). Farthest smart TV would routinely lose signal, but the RP-53 has remedied that.

Cons: couldn't get the setup to work using the Ethernet port. Had to just use the web route. Menu setup was initially slow to respond, but after firmware update, it sped up.

Other Thoughts: I had to place it in direct line of sight for it to register full signal strength. Could only get 3 of 4 bars on front panel going around a corner (distance was ~35 feet). I happy with the performance.

3 out of 5 eggsMy 5G band quit after 2 days

Pros: Easy setup with WPS. It DOES have Access Point capability according to the device configuration.

Cons: 5G band failed after two days. The blue status LED's are a little too bright (no need for the "night light" feature!)

Other Thoughts: ASUS tech support wants ME to pay for shipping of defective unit to them for warranty coverage! I have not tried the Access Point mode of this device since the 5G failed. I recently bought an ASUS dual band N wireless router and have been very happy with it, so that is why I went with this Repeater. But I don't think I should have to pay for shipping of the defective unit to them for repair or replacement.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well with Apple devices

Pros: - Worked right out of the box.
- Separates 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, so you know for sure which one you're connected to. This is perfect for my Retina MBP which has BT/WiFi interference issues when connected to a 2.4 GHz network. Now it always connects to the 5 GHz one with no issues. My other Apple devices works well with it too.
- Supports AirPlay audio streaming for Apple devices. Tested and working.
- Maintains very decent speeds in the basement with the main router located on the 2nd floor.
- Compact, good looking.

Cons: - The manual that came in the box wasn't 100% accurate. I can see how some not-so-tech-savvy people might have problems following the instructions in it.

Other Thoughts: This product has exceeded all my expectations, I'm actually quite surprised that other people have had negative experiences with it.

1 out of 5 eggsBad ASUS - BAD!

Pros: Easy setup. Videos available for setup. When it works, it works well. It worked well for 4 1/2 months. ASUS makes decent products except for this one.

Cons: ASUS support is long and tedious and they didn't know this product well. It worked for only 4 1/2 months before the 5G died. 1/2 hour minimum wait for tech support to get it sent back. Tech support hold line says "Agent will be with you shortly." They lie.

Other Thoughts: Bought the 1 year extended warranty due to a few reviews but I haven't been able to use it yet because it's only been 5 mos.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Stuff

Pros: Works great, we have an L shaped house and wifi would not penetrate to far corner. This is one of the only range extenders with 5 and 2.4 that work at the same time Have not had any problems at all

Cons: Only con would be how to update firmware. It's kind of pain and no instructions. You have to download then disconnect and connect extender and search for file to update fimware.

Other Thoughts: As long as it keeps working this solved most of our problems.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy!

Pros: Best single thing I ever did! Comcast has been to my house dozens of times and has never suggested anything of value to solve my problem but this did it withing five minutes of opening the package. Very quick setup; just press two buttons, one on the repeater followed by the WPS button on your router.

Cons: Not much I can think of.

Other Thoughts: I could not change routers as my phone also comes through Comcast but their router would not penetrate even the short distance from my basement to my first floor. I added this, putting it as close on the first floor to the router in the basement and the results are virtually the same now as a direct cable connection. Just amazing! If you are having weak reception from your router, try this first.

1 out of 5 eggsI'll never buy anything Asus again!

Pros: Setup was easy.
Strong signal when it worked.

Cons: 5 GHz band quit working after one week.
Asus customer service is non-existent.

Other Thoughts: After 1 week of use, the 5 GHz band quit working. (The extender would neither establish an upstream wireless connection to my router nor maintain a downstream wireless connection to clients.

I RMA'd the item with Asus (I had pitched the retail packaging and Newegg wouldn't RMA without original packaging). 6 days after Asus received the item, it still had no RMA status to report.

I opened a chat session and was told that Asus had never received the item. Later that day, I received an e-mail from Asus saying it had received the item, repaired it and sent it back out -- all within 3 hours after telling me it hadn't received my item.

It's now two days after Asus told me it had shipped my item and provided a tracking number. My item still hasn't been received by Fedex.

Opened another chat session. This time I was told that I had been provided with the wrong tracking number. I was provided another tracking number. Fedex still doesn't have a record of the tracking number.

Asus then told me that winter storms had probably delayed the shipment. I asked from where the item had (or would be) shipped. I was told California. No winter storms in California.

Conceding that winter storms wouldn't have caused problems with pickups in California, Asus pulled the classic, "wait 24 more hours" move.

Bottom line, Asus "lost" my item twice - coming and going. I don't know that I'll ever see it.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy setup. Looks good and has a fancy night light.

Cons: I had to return 2 of these in a matter of weeks because of similar issues. Like other reviewer mentioned, the 5Ghz signal stopped working completely. ASUS's tech support had no clue - which surprises me since several folks across different message boards have been complaining about this issue. The fancy night light tends to freeze from time to time. I would stay away and look elsewhere.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
Where do you normally place the extenders? If you plan to use 5 Ghz, please ensure that there are no obstruction as 5 Ghz signals are much weaker than 2.4 Ghz signals that they don’t even pass through walls or ceilings unlike 2.4 Ghz. If you have a device that is 5 Ghz capable, please ensure that this device is properly configured and update its wifi driver accordingly. Also, ensure that it’s in close proximity. If you’d like to discuss this topic with me please contact me at cl-celeste@asus.com and include case#3395952 in the subject line. 1 out of 5 eggsAsus RP-N53

Pros: easy to setup, good connection speeds

Cons: stopped connecting to the 5Ghz signal from my router after 2 days. 2.4GHz signal still worked fine. Reading many web sites comments, this is a very common problem with this device. Some have asked for replacement, however in my case I decide it is not worth it to probably have the same problem with a replacement unit so asked NewEgg for a RMA refund.

Other Thoughts: disappointed as it worked well for the short period of time it did work

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Kevin,

Please ensure that there are no obstruction as 5 Ghz signals, in general, are much weaker than 2.4 Ghz signals that they don’t even pass through walls or ceilings unlike 2.4 Ghz. 5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Arrived today and setup was a breeze. I did it the old fashioned way and configured it with a laptop and ethernet cable.

Cons: Applying settings, rebooting, updating firmware was all very slow.

Other Thoughts: New firmware came out on 11/13 on ASUS's website, remember to update your firmware before configuring.
